"Yes like that Harry." Spells were flung through the air as the boy-who-lived and his Godfather duelled eachother upon a raised platform. Grunts registered back as a response to my words, an overpowered Expelliarmus being deflected by Sirius's offhand directly afterwards.
A confringo was flicked out of his onyx wand in response as Harry stepped to the side, letting it pass as a Levioso flickered out and attempted to grasp onto clothing. The minor spell was dispelled instantly with a low pulse of Finite, Sirius slashing down with his wand aggressively.
In an instant a wave of force, sourced from a bombarda spell but toned down to only knock back the opponent, stretched forth and cascaded into the 14 year old. He was immediately thrust through the air, his robes flapping in the magic-induced wind before landing flat on his back. Staring up at the weather-enchanted ceiling, the cold ice-like flooring of the duelling classroom; of Freyavellir, caressing his Hogwarts uniform.
"Merlin! That was harder than I thought it would be..." Sirius wiped the sweat from his brow, rushing over to Harry momentarily.
After picking him up off the floor the two looked back at me. Harry was grumbling somewhat as Sirius poked him in the side, their shenanigans bringing a light curl to my lips.
Clapping I moved forwards. "Well done Harry. You fought off a Hit-Wizard for a total of thirty seconds... A very impressive feat given your age and lack of knowledge." My last comments burned his pride a little as he gripped his fists tighter.
The little tyke didn't even know that the Expelliarmus spell was something he wouldn't have learnt until his 4th year, in his original timeline. Half sighing and half scoffing at his expression I looked over at Sirius.
"As for you. Extremely Rusty!" He flinched a little whilst rubbing the back of his neck, his eyes drifting to Harry as if asking for assistance. I rounded on him once more. "You've had a little over a week now to get back up to snuff and yet you were as laxidazical as that Weasley child in Harry's class."
Harry flinched as Sirius grimaced at the example used by yours truly.
"First of all, you allowed him to move too much. Controlling the environment is key! Secondly, you ignored the possibility of dodging his disarming spell. Wasting energy is a complete no-no!" He held up his hands in mock surrender.
"Sorry, sorry... Damn, didn't know there'd be another McGonagall..." I scowled at him, a flinch spreading through his posture as I turned to Harry.
"Did you get all that?" Sirius guffawed whilst the younger boy nodded deeply.
"Very well. Then, let me teach you the basics of fighting." Harry cocked his head.
"Not duelling?"
I scoffed again, a slight flex of my legs pushing me upwards to the duelling platform. "No, Duelling is showmanship with magic. It is like a dance that children do." I paused as I stretched my shoulders and lower body; crouching down into low squats before easing myself upwards. "Fighting is an adult game... One where the consequences are death and carnage. This is the game that Voldemort will play. The one that Dumbledore and Gellert have played for a very long time."
He gulped at my words as I adjusted my clothing.
"The first spell that you need to be able to cast is 'Protego Maxima'," A purple coloured shield burst forth around me, covering me from head to toe, "This is the upgraded form of the spell Protego. Suffixes and Prefixes are very important to spells and can boost their power by an insane amount depending on the meanings behind the word and the intent."
I continued as I slowly extended the shield, "In this case, 'Maxima' is indicating to the magic and my mind that I wish to extend the shield, or 'Protego', to the Maximum power and defence possible." Harry nodded as he tried to accomplish it, his wand sparking before it fizzled.
"To cast the spell you need to have an image within your head. Visualisation is key in magic. Besides this there is also the Intent behind the usage of the spell, the emotion behind the usage and ultimately your understanding of what the spell is to do." Sirius frowned at the list of things I stated, his demeanor shifting ever so slightly.
"To dissect this spell, we must first begin with the Visualisation of the spell..." They nodded.
"I visualise the spell as an impenetrable barrier of air around myself. It keeps everything outside of its shell whilst allowing me to breathe due to it being air... From there we get to Intent... My intent is to protect myself and those within the radius, to stop any harm coming to those close to me. The strongest emotion with this expanded spell is Protectiveness or Possessiveness."
Harry raised his hand and spoke when I inclined my head, "Why 'Possessiveness'?"
I smiled. "People usually wish to protect what is theirs, no?" Both of them nodded in acknowledgement as both conjured images of things they would wish to protect within their minds.
"Lastly is the understanding." Sirius rolled his eyeballs, stifling his groan as best as he could. "Understanding doesn't mean reading books constantly, though that can help..." Sirius perked up again, his Godson laughing at his antics before regaining focus once more.
"Understanding, as a concept, implies a feeling or sense for something. You can read something unendingly and never truly understand it... With spells, this is the same. Understanding comes from understanding the emotions associated with the spell and also the other components that create the spell... Which are?"
"Visualisation, Intent and Emotion." I clapped once more, the spell cutting out as I did so.
"Indeed! Now, get up here, both of you... And I want you to try a spell that you haven't been able to accomplish."
Sirius jumped up to the platform and pulled Harry along with him, the two of them standing next to me as I willed the platform to expand slightly for our needs.
"Now, both of you, tell me what spells you are trying to cast."
Sirius spoke out first, "Piertotum Locomotor."
"Ah a complex one! Great! Please break down your steps as relevant to the structure I just offered you."
He grimaced whilst thinking before eventually speaking up... "I see stones and suits of armours moving under my command and attacking my enemy. My intent is to stop my enemy and the emotion I use is desperation? As for understanding, haven't I completed that step?" Now I grimaced...
"Okay... First of all, the visualisation... Perhaps you are misunderstanding the spell? It is not a typical animation spell, this is a sentience spell. You aren't making all of them move by yourself, you are not a puppeteer. Try imagining yourself breathing life into the objects you wish to bring sentience to, like Merlin might have done to the King's Blade... They then become your loyal soldiers, friends even... Willing to aid you in whatever you wish."
He had already closed his eyes and was concentrating on cementing this image in his brain. After a minute he opened his eyes, waiting for guidance.
"The intent behind the spell is then guided by the image... They aren't stone and metal to throw at your enemies as a mere sacrifice, you wouldn't sacrifice friends... No, they are soldiers, your intent to is to ask them to set to a task, to protect, or to attack, or to help lift... The key here is the asking within the intent. You are not forcing the magic to do your bidding as such, you are coaxing it to align with your will."
A bubbling joy filled his eyes as he imagined everything I was feeding him.
"Finally you have emotion... This is the hardest part. The emotions most connected to this spell are spoken of in the name... Piertotum... Piero is a derivative of Latin, it means dutiful or loyal... What emotions would best serve this spell?"
He croaked out the response as if he were amazed at how stupid he had been, "Loyalty and Duty. Merlin's bloody Beard! How didn't I get that?"
"With those all lined up now, try to cast the spell..." I pulled several training dummies from the side of the walls and lined them up opposite him.
"Piertotum Locomotor "
The targets immediately straightened up and bowed towards him. The wands held in their wooden hands stood at a salute before their faces whilst their painted upon eyes gained a form of movement. It was a wonderous form of magic really and was hardly used due to the taxing nature of the spell; if one didn't know all of the elements to it, and the necessity for Humanoid-looking inanimate objects.
With satisfaction I watched Sirius gape at the display opposite him, Harry mimicking him as he too let his jaw drop to the floor; figuratively speaking.
"Very good! Now, Harry?"
He violently snapped out of his wonder and nervously fiddled with his wand.
"Um, I have been trying to get Arresto Momentum down... You know, if I fall from Quidditch practice or something. I've failed almost every time in the past. Hermione says its because I haven't read enough and am too young to cast it..."
I frowned.
"Bullshit!" They blanched at my exclamation.
"Age has nothing to do with magic. The only limits that exist are those that we place upon ourselves."
I blinked and flexed my magic across the space. The walls closed in instantly. The very platform we stood upon heightened immensely before a gaping pit emerged before the three of us. At the bottom of the pit, hundreds of feet down, lay a lovely lake of water.
"One of these dummies, under Sirius's direction, will jump off the side and you will try to cast the spell. But first, I wish for you to go through the steps..."
"Right...! Um, I imagine myself or another person stopping falling. My intent is to stop them from dying or getting harmed... My emotion, well, I don't really have one other than fear of someone getting hurt..." He turned contemplative within moments, his words slowing down as he thought through the problem.
"I won't give you the answer like this dunderhead" I pointed to Sirius.
"Hey!"
"But, I will give you a hint... The meaning of the spell is quite literally Arrest Momentum, in other words, stop all physical movement."
Harry immediately widened his eyes and facepalmed, his gaze flicking over to Sirius who grinned and craned his wand backwards ever so slightly to one of the training dummies.
Within moments that dummy proceeded to careen down the chasm.
"Arresto Momentum! "
In an instant the dummy was wrapped in an invisible force that slowly bled its speed away until it hovered just centimetres away from the water's surface. The boy sweat as he let the spell fade, his wand and concentration waning as he felt the emotion of success well up from within him.
"YES!" The sound of the dummy splashing was smothered by his joyous outburst as Sirius high-fived him immediately. I let this enjoyment continue for a while until I continued with the last of the lesson for today.
"So, what have you both learned?"
""Visualisation, Intent, Emotion and Understanding.""
I smirked mischievously...
"No, you learnt that I am way cooler than that old coot Dumbledore, is what."
They both started laughing along with me as Hela silently watched us all, her aura radiating a comfort and warmth that was usually distant from that which she portrayed.
"Same time tomorrow I'll teach you both some more spells and we'll venture into the supposedly 'darker' spells." Sirius grimaced but I simply rolled my eyes.
After bidding them adieu for the day I returned the room to its usual state and jumped down off of the platform. I enjoyed teaching people. It gave me a shoot of adrenaline to realise that my efforts have allowed someone else to achieve what they previously thought was impossible.
Game making gave me the same thrill as It was me weaving realities and stories together that were supposed to be fictional but become real after I instil points into them. The rush of watching hundreds, thousands, hundreds of thousands of people play my games and make friendships with others around them was almost euphoric.
