The last salamander's molten eyes locked onto Louis, its body smoking as it dug its claws into the scorched ground. It knew it was outmatched—but it wasn't going down without a fight.
Louis adjusted his grip, his knuckles white against the spear shaft. His arms burned from exertion, sweat dripped down his face, and his breathing was ragged. Every inch of his body ached.
But he had no choice but to keep going.
With a snarl, the salamander launched forward, its maw glowing with the beginnings of another massive fireball. Louis didn't wait.
He charged too.
The beast unleashed a blast of fire point-blank—but this time, Louis was ready. He planted his feet, gripping the spear with both hands and used it like a lever, swinging it with all his weight—
SWOOSH!
The divine energy within the weapon flared, splitting through the fireball like a blade through paper.
