Chapter 36 - Leaving the Ramparts

Finally.

After what seemed to be an eternity, I was actually going to be leaving these walls.

Well in reality it's only been a few days, but even that seems like a lot when placed against the fact that roughly only twenty to fifteen days are left in this loop.

And although it might be a bit greedy of me, I would like to at least find some more clues on how this disease even began to impact the life of these Sevallians.

Even if it's a disease with a mortality rate above a hundred percent when contracted due to the fact it raises its host, the fact of the manner remains.

It's a disease.

And like all diseases, this one should have a source that it eventually spread off from to infect everyone

Patient Zero so to speak.

But for now, the only thing I had to rely on was a pretty biased religiously inclined book that only stated that the 'Pagan' Gods had cursed them

So for now, the only goals I had were to visit the Fragmented shrines for some more clues on the disease and the Clock tower for clues on the timeline.

'When I put it like that it actually seems kind of simple?'

Dragging my fingers across the stone work, I leisurely took my time to wander across the walls of the ramparts.

You may be asking why I was calmly walking around in a wide open area since undead were particularly rampant but the answer was surprisingly simple if not strange

There just weren't any undead around.

'I know we slaughtered several undead, but this is just excessive.'

For a several hundreds of meters around this particular length of wall, there was no undead to be seen.

Around the 1st or 2nd kilometer mark there were of course undead but they were so far away that I had to squint just to barely make them out.

And even then they just resembled ants crawling alongside the top of a large stone brick.

But hey, I wasn't complaining.

Humming a tune of a song I don't remember the name of, I glanced over the sides of the walls and looked for the black bridge which separated Oldcastle from Newcastle.

Seeing as it was literally the only bridge connecting the two islands and any attempt to leave through other means would be vaporization, guess which route I was taking?

If you guessed vaporization then congratulations for breaching a new level of stupid never thought possible.

Anyways

When you took away the fact that this was a zombie apocalypse set in a medieval fantasy with swords and magic, this place was surprisingly scenic and serene.

Save the groans from something unknown echoing out of the numerous cracks in the walls of course, this was surprisingly Serene.

Especially since nothing was trying to claw my face off.

Observing my surroundings, the surroundings had a strangely post apocalyptic vibe to them.

Which made sense since it was literally the results of an apocalypse, but it was still strange to see.

It reminded me of those abandoned cities after a bombing run left behind by those who luckily escaped the first run, overtaken by nature's uncaring movements as the years passed.

It's just that this one was slightly more medieval, the same feeling was present all over as vines creeped throught he cracks in the stone.

Feeling something stir in my chest my eyes drifted over tot the black bridge standing in the middle of the sea, connecting the two islands together.

'I guess this is my stop.'

Pausing to listen for any footsteps not belonging to me, I stared at the elevator like contraption set right in front of me.

With instructions carved into the side of the stone wall, it depicted one path out of here which was as stated earlier, the black bridge.

Stepping into it, I felt the metal plate underneath me shift, the numerous chains hanging to the side, moving the counterweights with surprisingly fluid movements.

Grinding against each other as the gears moved, the elevator although slightly rusted and mostly dangerous in terms of no guard rails was very smooth and fast

Bringing me from the top floor of this super tall wall, it brought me straight downwards into its depths, the shadows bleeding out of the walls as I switched my head to the more darkness friendly version.

Two eyeballs turning into one, I felt my vision brighten slightly as my head served as a natural source of light using something unknown as a fuel.

Blinking with a flame like eyelid, my body shook as the elevator hit ground zero, the heavy metal plate clanking as all of the numerous counterweights binding and moving the elevator crawled to a halt.

The cling of metal counterweights ringing against their chains sounded out as their steel weight sensitive elevator groaned.

Stepping onto the pressure plate just set outside the elevator, I walked forwards.

A hallway stood before me.

If I glanced backwards, the only thing I was able to see was the elevator and a semi broken wall.

And then it hit me.

I was actually leaving this island.

Sure I may return at the end of the month but it still was shocking to me.

'...It's been two weeks since I came here.'

Fifteen days since my first arrival

Fifteen days since the God of Death named Death came and spoke to me before leaving an insignia along my chest of a skull with glasses under a hood.

Fourteen days since I met Ella.

Thirteen since I found my first clue

Thirteen since I found others besides Ella

Thirteen since I first met an Elite undead.

Ten since I killed my second

Eight since I met Cherry

Eight since I met the third.

Five since I woke from my coma.

Four since I left the marketplace.

Three since I killed the Third.

Three since I stopped familial murder.

One since I woke from my coma

Zero since I left Cherry

They may have been just a mere two weeks, but it seemed as if a several months had already passed.

Blinking, I continued to walk forwards, the rune in my hand glowing softly as I felt its smooth grained surface carved into the stone.

Rubbing its sharp edges, my footsteps soon carried me towards the end of the Hallway where a glowing door that seemed to connect spaces appeared.

With a bright yellow hue reminiscent of sunlight, I stepped forwards into the doorway.
