The old man looked at the gear and then turned to the woman lying motionless on the ground. He gently moved her to sit against the wall and rested her head on his shoulder.
Then he shook his head and said softly, "Just leave us. I won't go. I can't walk anymore."
"Mister, go up to the 35th floor first. When the rescue team arrives, they'll help your wife," Chantelle said. She didn't want to see him die in the fire.
The old man suddenly got angry. He shoved the gear she offered.
It slipped from her hand and nearly dropped down to the 33rd floor.
"I said leave us alone! Stop bothering me! Go away!"
Chantelle couldn't convince him. Then she noticed Kane hadn't moved for over ten minutes.
Worried about Kane, Chantelle reached into her bag, took out a small bottle of medicine, and handed it to the old man.
"Mister, there are two life-saving pills in this bottle," Chantelle said. "If you trust me, take one when things get bad. I'll come back for you after I find my son."
