Chapter 20 - Voices

Alto was guided to the special room by the cacophony of muffled voices, after gaining access to the room it slid open to reveal a long tunnel lit by beams of powerful light.

Alto gulped down and looked down the hall, he considered it whether it would be safe to go in deeper or simply pull back. The voices still reached his ears and he could not make them out, Alto had always had a curiosity about certain things and this just to happened to fall under that category.

Alto continued to push in deeper down the tunnels, he expected them to go for a long time but it did not take minutes for him to reach the end. Here there was another steel door with its own verification terminal, he pressed down the professors id card on it and the door beeped before opening.

What first shot out of the room was hot steam and the voices now exploded much louder like screams, Alto covered his ears and waited for the steam to clear. When it did he could hear the sound of beeping in short intervals. The room behind the steel door was small, it was in an hexagon shape.

In the middle was what looked like a service pod in the shape of an oval, similar to an egg. It was hooked into an hole in the ground with a number of wires coming in and out of it to many computers. Astounded by the sight Alto came closer to the object and dropped his hands, he was unsure of what he was seeing but he could tell that the voices came from it.

Alto had expected the source of the voices to be from a group of people who had been held hostage against their wills but it came from a pod. From listening to the strange voices they did not sound anything like he had heard before, they sounded like foreign languages or a rage of words clustered together.

"You've seen it now Al, now let's head back." He told himself, trying to quench his curiosity. "It's just a pod, nothing much."

Alto paused for a moment and thought to himself.

Pods were usually transport vehicles but they were only seen in the transport hangers not in secret labs. It made him wonder what the professor was doing with one and how she had acquired it.

"Did she build it herself?" He thought. But that would explain why she always kept to herself in the strange room. But if it really was a pod he would have seen some thrusters on it or on some table somewhere but instead it was clamped to the ground. Alto suspected that it was not a transport pod but instead a containment pod.

But what could be contained within it, Alto was beginning to feel a little over his head and wanted to leave before stumbling into something he should not have.

As he turned to leave the strange pod called to him, it was still a foreign to gue but from the way it spoke he could tell it was calling to him.

Alto gulped down and said. "Al, let's just get moving. You've seen enough."

The pod started to glow a soft red glow and beep wildly, Alto froze from fear and shock. A voice spoke from somewhere in the room.

"Warning! Containment pod has been rendered inactive."

"Warning! All defense systems have been rendered inactive."

Alto almost screamed. "Bloody hell, what's going on."

But before he could turn and run the pod stopped glowing and the entire room went dark, leaving Alto in blackness. Alto stayed there for a few seconds, holding his breath before the light came back from the pod.

It was a soft blue light that caught, Alto's eyes. A second later his fears came true as the pod gave a loud hissing sound as it started to open up. It opened up in the middle and both sides going down till they vanished halfway.

Alto who had been holding his breath for a long time started to breath again. What was left in the heart of the pod was a strange device floating in the air.

"What is that?" Alto asked but he had no answer.

His first thought was to stay away from it and run back to the professor but he also wanted to see what she had been working tirelessly on.

What hovered in the air was a small silver sphere, it shot out a beam of blue light that scanned Alto from head to toe, it stopped halfway and beamed at his wrist comm device. Alto jumped back in fear, he had had enough of this and was ready to leave.

The orb shot through the air just as Alto was turning to leave, Alto barely managed to dodge it but it bounced off the wall and came back at him. From it's trajectory Alto could tell it was aiming for his wrist comm device.

He evaded it and took for the stairs but the orb was much faster, it bounced off the wall and into his wrist comm device. The orb turned into a black liquid that disintegrated the wrist comm and started to burn his skin.

Alto's face went white as he cried in fear and ran up the stairs and out of the room, the doors closed up as he left the room. Back in the engineering department room he could still find the professor asleep, he was at least relieved that she did not find him in her room, she would have kicked him out or punished him.

He felt a strange feeling coming from his wrist where his watch had been only a second ago. He raised his wrist to see the black liquid pulsing and moving around like a living organism. Alto gulped down and thought to himself.

"I'm finished." His first thoughts were that he had unleashed a super virus that would eat him out from the inside out.

Just then a voice called out to him and it was the professors. "Measel why are you staring at that thing on your arm."
