Having an omnipotent father is definitely not a blessing—nothing, good or bad, can be hidden from him.
Under his all-seeing gaze, I coughed lightly, my face as thick as a fortress wall, and deftly changed the subject. "Dad, can I take Kao back with me?"
Kao's lips twitched in a dry smile, as if he held little hope. His dark eyes flickered with something unreadable before he glanced at Lionel, who stood dumbfounded in the garden, his narrow eyes thoughtful.
Hue sized up Kao before speaking, his deep voice measured but firm. "He is, after all, a vampire. It might not be convenient for him to stay with you. Perhaps it's better for him to remain with your mother for now."
I had always wondered why Kao could resist the allure of my blood, and a defensive thought crept into my mind. "Kao, are you willing?"
"I am." But he didn't return my smile, merely giving me a cold glance before looking away, his jaw tight as if biting back words.
