Chapter 9 - Chapter Nine: The Pulley of Distractions

Akutu had barely recovered from the stress of the group project when a new battle emerged—distractions. University wasn't just about academics; it was a world filled with temptations, social events, and countless moments that could pull her away from her goals.

It started with a simple invitation.

"Akutu, there's a party this Friday. You're coming, right?" Linda, her groupmate, asked excitedly.

Akutu hesitated. "I don't know. I have assignments."

Linda rolled her eyes. "Assignments will always be there. You need to loosen up a little."

Jenny, overhearing the conversation, smirked. "She's right, you know. You've been working like a machine. A little fun won't kill you."

Akutu bit her lip. It wasn't that she didn't want to go, but she knew herself. One night of fun could easily turn into a habit.

But then again… didn't she deserve a break?

Friday night arrived, and against her better judgment, Akutu found herself at the party. The air was thick with music, the bass vibrating through her chest. The atmosphere was intoxicating—laughter, flashing lights, people dancing without a care in the world.

"See? This isn't so bad," Linda shouted over the music, handing Akutu a drink.

Akutu took a cautious sip. The sweet, unfamiliar taste danced on her tongue.

She wasn't used to this. She wasn't sure if she liked it. But she also didn't want to be the odd one out.

As the night wore on, she found herself loosening up, laughing more, letting the music guide her movements. For the first time since arriving at university, she wasn't thinking about deadlines or responsibilities.

But somewhere deep inside, a small voice whispered—don't lose yourself.

The next morning, Akutu woke up with a pounding headache.

Her phone buzzed—a reminder for an assignment due by midnight. Panic surged through her. She had completely forgotten about it.

Jenny, looking equally exhausted, groaned. "So… did you have fun?"

Akutu didn't answer. She grabbed her laptop, fingers flying over the keyboard. The party had been fun, but now she was paying the price.

She had always been disciplined, but last night showed her how easy it was to slip.

The pulleys of life had shifted once again.
