Chapter 44 - The Pulley of Serendipity

Life had a funny way of introducing people at just the right time.

Not always in the way you expected. Not always in the way you planned.

But in the way you needed.

Akutu wasn't looking for anyone new.

She was just focusing on herself.

But sometimes, the most meaningful connections come when you aren't searching for them.

It happened on a regular afternoon.

Akutu had just finished a library session and was heading toward her hostel when she heard someone call out.

"Hey! Library girl!"

She turned, surprised.

A tall guy in a navy-blue hoodie jogged up to her, a wide grin on his face.

She recognized him from campus—he was in the year above her, a familiar face in the business faculty.

"I think you left this behind," he said, holding up a small notebook.

Akutu's eyes widened. "Oh! That's mine!"

She took it quickly, flipping through the pages to make sure everything was intact. It was the notebook where she jotted down random thoughts, ideas, and reflections.

"Did you… read it?" she asked cautiously.

The guy laughed. "Relax, I'm not a spy. I just saw your name on the inside cover. Akutu, right?"

She nodded.

"And you are…?"

"Kojo," he introduced himself. "Final year, Business Administration. Also known as the guy who saves lost notebooks."

Akutu chuckled. "Well, thanks for that."

Kojo shrugged. "No problem. But now I'm curious… what do you write about?"

She hesitated. "Just thoughts. Observations. Things I don't always say out loud."

"That's interesting," Kojo said. "Most people don't take the time to do that."

Akutu smiled. "Maybe most people should."

Kojo nodded thoughtfully. "Maybe they should."

That was the beginning of something neither of them expected.

It wasn't love at first sight.

It wasn't some grand, dramatic moment.

Just a simple conversation between two people who hadn't spoken before.

But something about it felt… easy.

Natural.

Like meeting someone who somehow already understood a part of you.

Over the next few weeks, they ran into each other more often.

At the library. At campus events. Even at the cafeteria.

Each time, their conversations grew longer, deeper.

They talked about ambitions, fears, random observations about life.

Kojo was different from Nathan.

He wasn't loud or overly confident, but he had a quiet charm—thoughtful, observant, the kind of person who made you feel truly heard.

And for the first time in a long time, Akutu felt a connection that didn't come with expectations.

Just understanding.

And maybe…

That was the best kind of beginning.

The pulleys of life had shifted once again.
