Chapter 57: The Villain Aura Falls Short
Alice noticed Angela had been infected and immediately turned to Dr. Ashford.
Just as she was about to say something, the roaring sound of an engine interrupted her.
Chang Wei slammed the accelerator to the floor, shifting gears to the maximum. The school bus, which was supposed to have a speed limit, was now transformed. Thanks to Chang Wei's extensive knowledge of car modifications and driving skills, he easily unlocked the bus's potential, unleashing its true nature.
Everyone inside nearly collided with one another, screaming and clutching onto anything they could for support.
Meanwhile, Chang Wei had activated his super senses. The world appeared to him as if it were playing in slow motion, ten times slower than usual. With such heightened mental processing and reflexes, his every move was meticulous and precise.
The school bus roared down the road, weaving through gaps, gliding through obstacles like a butterfly among flowers. If a blockage appeared, he either smashed through it or used the wall to perform a breathtaking drift. Chang Wei was thoroughly enjoying himself.
For him, the worlds of Prototype and Predator had been too oppressive—he'd been focused solely on growing stronger and reaping rewards. His days had been filled with calculations, planning, and endless learning.
Now, entering the cinematic Resident Evil universe, he felt an immediate sense of relief.
He was deeply familiar with the series, having watched every movie, played the games, and even followed the CG animations. Knowing there was nothing in this world that could truly threaten him, he wasn't in a rush to reap anything significant.
He decided to relax and face everything with the mindset of his past, ordinary self—lest he lose the ability to feel and express emotions altogether. Though human emotions might seem trivial, they were indispensable.
"Slow down!!!"
"AAAAHHHH!!!"
Dr. Ashford clung tightly to his daughter, Angela, and roared at Chang Wei.
The only person managing to stay composed was Alice, though she also felt like her heart was about to leap out of her throat.
At Chang Wei's breakneck speed, they quickly reached their destination—the municipal building.
Recalling Dr. Ashford's earlier warning about snipers, the bus stopped some distance away from the building.
At that moment, a helicopter appeared in the distance, flying toward them.
"They're here!"
Everyone immediately grew excited.
"We need to hurry. They'll retrieve the data and leave soon," Dr. Ashford urged.
To avoid being slowed down by Dr. Ashford, the group decided to split up—one team to deal with the snipers and mercenaries guarding the area.
Chang Wei knew the helicopter was here to recover Nemesis. In the original film, its rear compartment housed Nemesis's medical pod. The so-called "data retrieval" was just an excuse to bring Nemesis back.
Dr. Ashford didn't even know this, which showed how thoroughly he'd been excluded from the higher-ups' plans.
With time running out, the group sprang into action.
Inside the municipal building, Umbrella Corporation soldiers had sealed off all entrances to prevent zombies or B.O.W.s from breaking in unnoticed.
Alice used a method that Chang Wei had never seen in the films: scaling the building to eliminate the sniper on the rooftop. Then, she rappelled down the wall and swiftly took out the mercenaries below.
However, their weaker teammates were all captured.
Surprisingly, Supervisor Cain was confirmed to be dead. Chang Wei had initially sensed multiple ambushes and thought Cain might still be alive due to his "villain aura." But Cain was indeed dead—after all, faced with over a hundred T-virus Hunters, unless he had Superman's invincibility, survival was impossible. No amount of villain aura could save him.
The new arrivals were unfamiliar to Chang Wei. As a diehard Resident Evil fan, he couldn't recognize these characters. Who were they supposed to be?
The man introduced himself as Lewis Witt, Cain's replacement as supervisor. His mission was not only to recover Nemesis but also to capture Alice.
Since Alice had perfectly bonded with the T-virus while retaining her human appearance, her value was immeasurable. Although Nemesis was powerful, its grotesque appearance limited its use as a biological weapon.
"This ends here."
Lewis Witt was a bald, burly white man. Expressionless, he looked at Alice and said coldly:
"Kill the others. Bring her back."
Lewis Witt then issued a nuclear launch command into his earpiece, set for ten minutes, demonstrating a decisiveness that Cain never had. There would be no Nemesis vs. Alice showdown under his watch.
"No!"
Alice stepped forward, but several mercenaries immediately pointed their guns at her.
Then, the Umbrella soldiers guarding Chang Wei and the captured group suddenly opened fire without hesitation.
"Boom!"
In the next moment, a blinding light erupted, sending the shooting soldiers flying.
"What's going on?"
Everyone was stunned, including Lewis Witt, who looked in disbelief at Chang Wei—the man Umbrella's files described as just a Chinese tourist visiting the U.S.
Behind Chang Wei, a pair of immaculate, snow-white wings unfolded, large enough to shield a person completely. He now stood clad in a pure white priest's uniform.
"Mortals, how dare you harm the innocent!"
