I shook my head, trying to process the bet that the man had proposed. I didn't want to agree to it, but Lucy was grabbing my hands and pleading with me to accept.
"Please, Emma, you have to believe in me," Lucy said, her eyes shining l "I am going to win this competition and bring home that money for you."
I hesitated, not wanting to believe her words. What if Lucy lost? What if she got hurt?
But Lucy just smiled and squeezed my hands. "Trust me, Emma. I have got this."
I took a deep breath and nodded, trying to push aside my doubts. Lucy was my friend, and I had to support her.
As we walked over to the horse that had been assigned to Lucy, I could see that something was wrong. The horse was skittish and nervous, its eyes rolling wildly as it danced around the arena.
Lucy approached the horse calmly, speaking softly to try and calm it down. But the horse was having none of it, rearing up on its hind legs and whinnying loudly.
