The next morning, Alex Carter and V, who had spent the entire night together, lay in the villa's big bed, wrapped in each other's arms, and drifted off into a rare sleep.

A burst of rapid communication woke V up.

"Who..." V murmured, rolling over lazily and snuggling back against Alex.

The communication connected, revealing Judy's anxious and distressed expression on the other end.

"Judy? Did something happen?" V asked instinctively.

Next to her, Alex's heart skipped a beat.

Judy was calling.

Could it be that Evelyn had committed suicide?

Judy said sullenly, "V, are you free now? Evelyn's gone, and I'm really upset on my own."

"Okay, I'll be right there."

V hung up the phone, slipped out of Alex's arms, and started getting dressed.

"Alex, get up quickly and come with me to Judy's place."

"Judy? What's wrong with her?" Alex asked tentatively.

V shook her head: "She only said that Evelyn was gone, but didn't provide any details."

Gone?

Was she just gone, or had something worse happened?

With such an ambiguous remark, Alex was momentarily at a loss.

He quickly got up and dressed.

At the same time, he couldn't help but ask, "Why do you seem more concerned about Judy than I am? Is it possible that..."

"I... I'm just worried about my friend," V explained vaguely, her head down, trying to brush it off.

But how could Alex be so easily fooled?

"Are you sure it's just friendship?" Alex looked at V with interest and said teasingly, "Why do I feel like you might have a thing for pretty girls?"

V paused, then her eyes turned dangerous: "What do you mean by 'a thing'? Care to explain that word to me?"

Alex was embarrassed.

A careless slip of the tongue.

Trying to distract her ended up catching him off guard...

...

Though the two bantered, they didn't waste any time.

In a few minutes, they were packed and in the car.

By the way, the car was a surprise.

A production model from Rayfield.

While Alex hadn't seen it while playing games, the Rayfield brand was legendary.

The famous Caliburn and Guinevere, the most expensive Lady of the Lake in the game, were both owned by Rayfield.

He heard that Dexter's two Rayfields weren't as expensive as the Caliburn and the Lady of the Lake, but they still cost hundreds of thousands of eurodollars.

It was a small surprise.

They roared all the way to Judy's apartment in the new car.

It was quite the spectacle.

Even other vehicles on the road quickly moved aside when they saw the Rayfield.

Scratches aside, insurance companies were considerate nowadays.

But to provoke the big shot inside would be a nightmare in Night City.

Whoever didn't pay attention might end up as a corpse in the trash the next day.

With such an imposing presence, they reached Judy's place in less than an hour, despite the usual journey taking more than an hour.

"This car is so much fun," V reluctantly let go of the steering wheel.

She was a nomad at heart, and to say she didn't love cars would be a lie.

As a mercenary, she didn't have many opportunities to get involved with cars.

Seeing the love in V's eyes, Alex smiled, saying nothing.

But he was already planning in his mind when he could give V a surprise.

They made their way to Judy's door.

"You're here..."

Seeing them at the door, Judy's previously lost expression softened a bit.

Alex subconsciously glanced at the bathroom.

Well, no smell of blood.

It seemed that this time things hadn't followed the original plot.

"What's the matter, Judy? You don't look well," V asked with concern.

Judy sighed and handed a handwritten note to Alex and V.

Such things were rare in this era.

Two crooked lines were written on it:

"I'm sorry, Judy, but I've decided to leave Night City and start a new life.

Also, please apologize to V and thank Alex for me."

She didn't write where she was going or what she would do.

Evelyn had just left Night City.

Seeing this result, Alex couldn't help feeling emotional.

He could only hope that she could find a stable job and live a good life moving forward.

"Damn it, Evelyn didn't even say a word to me..." Judy looked angry and heartbroken.

Alex shook his head slightly: "She probably just didn't want to get you involved."

V stepped forward and hugged Judy gently, comforting her, "At least she's still alive and ready to start anew."

"Maybe she'll find a better life outside of Night City."

Judy nodded: "Thank you, V and Alex."

Watching V and Judy hug each other, Alex suddenly felt a bit out of place.

Why did he feel like he was the third wheel here?

If he were to be jealous... he wasn't sure whether to be jealous of Judy hugging V or V hugging Judy.

But V had just gotten out of his bed and was now hugging Judy.

He decided he must be compensated for this tonight!
