Silent and seamless, Glenn's figure vanished in an instant and reappeared, unharmed, at the other end of the courtyard.
"Shrinking the Ground into Inches." With a muttered incantation, Glenn returned to his original position.
"Oh, amazing, amazing! Glenn, you're incredible!" Hermione, sitting under a tree and munching on watermelon, clapped her hands happily before resuming her snack with a satisfied crunch.
Ever since Glenn had mastered Shrinking the Ground into Inches without splitting his form, he had Hermione watch him practice this mobility sorcery. After all, the little girl would eventually need to learn this spell herself, and seeing it in action now would help her in the future.
Of course, it might also have been Glenn's childish urge to show off, but who could say for sure?
"Hmm, skilled casting. You've managed to master Shrinking the Ground into Inches in just over a month," Lin Yingqing's voice came from the doorway leading to her rest chamber at the North China School of Sorcery. Her tone carried unabashed praise. "That's something many sorcerers older than you can't accomplish. Well done, Glenn."
Glenn turned and nodded slightly toward his grandmother.
Today was the day they were preparing to return to England. The Hawthorne and Granger families were busy packing their belongings in the courtyard.
After a year of traveling and indulging in fun, they had finally decided to return to work and school.
Before leaving, Glenn wanted to practice Shrinking the Ground into Inches one last time. Once they were back, there would be no one to guide him.
Dumbledore probably didn't know sorcery, right?
Hmm… hard to say.
It was worth mentioning that the little girl had recently become fluent enough in Dragon Language to handle daily conversations. Although she still struggled with some obscure characters, she was ready to start learning Classical Chinese.
The two of them had already asked Glenn's grandmother to make a copy of a Classical Chinese textbook for them. They planned to study it together once they were back at school.
"It's a long road ahead. Classical Chinese isn't easy to learn, especially for foreigners like you two," Lin Yu commented. He promised to cheer them on in their linguistic journey.
As he spoke, he lay sprawled on a rocking chair, dressed in his usual tank top, flip-flops, and baggy shorts, not even bothering to open his eyes.
The two had grown familiar with him by now. Hermione retorted in Dragon Language, "Lin Yu, you're unbelievably lazy."
Lin Yu turned over, showing them the back of his head. His long black hair draped over the chair's backrest as he scratched his rear, utterly unbothered.
Hermione: .........
They had long given up trying to motivate this slacker.
Oh well, they knew how exhausting Lin Yu's work at school was. Letting him relax at home seemed fair enough.
"Not that you'll get to enjoy this lazy life for much longer. School's starting soon, you know…" The little girl's straightforward nature led her to voice her thoughts aloud, only to be whisked away by Glenn, who covered her mouth and carried her off.
Lin Yu: ............ Thanks for the reminder, I guess.
But she had a point. Learning Classical Chinese on their own in England would indeed be challenging. However, the little girl declared confidently that she wasn't afraid of hard work. If she struggled, she'd just study harder; if she was bad at it, she'd practice more.
Not long ago, Lin Yingqing had overheard their discussion about self-studying Classical Chinese after returning to school. After some thought, she suggested, "How about this? I'll ask my father to contact your headmaster and see if he'll allow you to install a Teleportation Door connecting to our courtyard. That way, you can come back here anytime to ask me questions. What do you think?"
Both of them were stunned, especially Hermione. The idea of being able to return here anytime to… ask questions made her so excited that she jumped up and grabbed Lin Yingqing's hands. "Can we really do that?!" But then, as if remembering something, her expression fell. Her gaze dropped as she murmured, "But I read in Hogwarts: A History that Apparition isn't allowed inside Hogwarts. Does that mean all space-related magic or sorcery would be ineffective there?"
If that were true, then the idea of a Teleportation Door wouldn't work, would it?
This couldn't happen!
It was worse now that the little girl's hopes had been raised, only to face the possibility of disappointment.
"Spatial restriction arrays, huh… Hogwarts truly is mysterious. As far as I know, there are fewer than five places with such restrictions. Even our schools in the Dragon Nation only have anti-flight arrays, and our spatial restriction arrays are still incomplete." Lin Yingqing nodded but then smiled. "But, Hermione, don't forget who I am. I'm an exceptional Artificer. Give me some time, and I can add a counter-array to the Teleportation Door that can break through spatial restrictions. Of course, it will require regular infusions of spiritual energy."
Hermione's eyes lit up again.
"Of course, this is all contingent on your headmaster's approval," Lin Yingqing added, patting Hermione's head.
Hermione nodded obediently. This was indeed something that would require Professor Dumbledore's personal consent. Otherwise, it was better to let it go.
After all, creating a passageway between two major nations could lead to unforeseen complications. Hermione didn't want to risk her or Glenn ending up in Azkaban.
However, Lin Yingqing hadn't mentioned any updates on the matter since then, and the two wisely refrained from asking. They both assumed the idea had likely been shelved.
Noticing her grandmother signaling for them to come over, Glenn glanced at Hermione, who was still engrossed in her watermelon and hadn't noticed Lin Yingqing's gesture. Taking a sip of his magic potion, Glenn once again used Shrinking the Ground into Inches to bring himself and Hermione—along with her watermelon—over to Lin Yingqing.
Experiencing the spell firsthand was also a way to help Hermione learn.
Though Hermione had grown accustomed to the sensation, the sudden queasiness made her lose her appetite. Annoyed, the little girl shoved the half-eaten watermelon into Glenn's mouth, wiped her hands on his shirt, and ran to Lin Yingqing for comfort.
Lin Yingqing chuckled as she patted the puffed-up little girl's head.
Glenn, expressionless, finished the watermelon and used a cleaning spell to tidy up his clothes.
Seeing that the two had calmed down, Lin Yingqing extended her right hand. In her palm lay a pair of bracelets, one black and one white, matching the color scheme of the Hand of Sorcery Glenn and Hermione already possessed.
"Here, these are farewell gifts for you. Try them on," Lin Yingqing said with a smile. Glenn guessed they were likely another set of sorcery tools.
By now, both he and Hermione were used to receiving such gifts from his grandmother. Despite Hermione's initial protests about the gifts being too valuable, they would inevitably find the items on their bedside table the next morning, enchanted with anti-loss spells to ensure they stayed with them.
Resigned to their fate, they had learned to accept Lin Yingqing's overwhelming love. After all, her sorcery tools were undeniably useful.
Glenn didn't put the bracelet on immediately. As usual, he examined it carefully. To his surprise, unlike the previous gifts, which had complex and arcane magical circuits that took significant effort to decipher, this bracelet's structure was surprisingly simple. It contained circuits for "transmission" and "perception," but Glenn had never seen such configurations before.
Though simple in structure, he couldn't decipher its purpose.
Puzzled, Glenn shook his head. Seeing Hermione already wearing hers, he followed suit and put his bracelet on his left wrist.
He felt nothing unusual after wearing it.
Noticing his confusion, Lin Yingqing smiled and explained, "This is a custom-made sorcery tool designed specifically for the two of you. Its sole function is…" She paused for dramatic effect, ensuring she had their full attention before continuing. "…to transmit emotions between you two. This will help Glenn suppress the magic within him until he masters the Book of Magic and learns to control his powers."
She added, "But the transmission only works when you make eye contact. Emotions are mysterious, born of your souls. Only through the connection of your gazes can they be shared. This is the best I can do."
Of course, Lin Yingqing left out one detail: this would also help the two understand each other's feelings better. As the ultimate supporter of the Glenn-Hermione pairing, Lin Yingqing was determined to assist, even from afar. >v<
"I see. This will indeed help suppress my Obscurial powers," Glenn thought. He now understood that an Obscurial's essence stemmed from the power generated by negative emotions and magic. If Hermione could transmit positive emotions through the bracelet, it would help him suppress that power.
He glanced at the little girl, who seemed to sense something and shifted her gaze from the bracelet.
Their eyes met, and in an instant, Glenn felt a flood of unfamiliar emotions rush into his mind. Most of them were feelings he had never experienced before, leaving him bewildered.
Well, not all of them were unfamiliar. At least he recognized anger and… was that joy? Or perhaps affection? Those two he had felt before.
"Anger must be about the watermelon… But what about joy? Where did that come from? And these other emotions, I can't identify them at all…"
Glenn continued to gaze into Hermione's brown eyes, trying to comprehend the new sensations, unaware of his own odd behavior.
Initially, Hermione didn't feel anything from Glenn through the bracelet. But as he stared at her for longer, her expression changed.
What is this?
The little girl's face turned red. Over time, she began to sense only one emotion from Glenn, and it was growing stronger.
She recognized this feeling very well—it was affection!
Hermione felt a surge of happiness. The earlier annoyance over the watermelon incident melted away.
Hehe.
