"Davina!" Abeedah called out to me.
my heart thumped inside my chest.
I hope I am not in trouble.
"Yes, Abeedah?"
"Have you heard?" She said, her eyes lit up with excitement.
"Heard what, exactly?"
She opened her mouth then shut it back, thought for a moment then asked "What would you like to hear first the important or the chatter?"
"Tell me the chatter first, then we will address the important together."
"Okay. Firstly, there's a rumour going around that you are dating the chairman's son, executive director Canaan."
"Ah? From where? On what basis?"
"From what i heard, it was between him and Executive assistant Douglas, because you were frequenting both their offices. But this morning, people saw you coming down with Executive Director Canaan from his car before meeting Executive assistant Douglas. According to the rumours, the smile they gave you was way too warm to be formal, and given the type of men they are to others, it was unexpected."
Though I was puzzled, I could see where they were coming from. Especially given the fact that they needed to liven up the environment after the project problems. However, I did not think I would be the topic of a workplace drama within my first month of working here.
I sighed loudly "So?"
Abeedah said "So, the staff believe there was a romantic rivalry between the two men over you, and that Director Canaan won."
"Wow, what a conclusion. Do you believe its true, Abeedah?"
Abeedah scoffed "No way. For starters, you have only been for two weeks. Secondly, You are more of a workerholic than the rest of us and barely go out to get lunch. Also, even if you are dating, then it is your choice and nobody's business. It does make for a fun story though."
I smiled "Thank you, Abeedah. Since you trust me so, I'll have you know that I frequent their offices because of our work arrangement and that was the same reason I came with Director Canaan. I already knew Executive Assistant Douglas before coming to this firm, thats why we are a bit relaxed with each other. As for the director's smile…he was thankful for a favour. That's all."
"Oh...that explains a lot."
I was happy that i had a companion in this firm, Abeedah had been helping since i got here.
ough of chatter, better move on to the serious issue.
"As for the important topic?"
Now, Abeedah returned to her working demeanor with a serious expression on her face.
"Yes, the investigators have discored who the mole is."
"That was fast. Who is it?"
"Director Canaan's new assistant, Precious."
I was quite shocked. Well, i did not know her enough to say i was or was not suspecting her, but it is still shocking.
"Actually, I have not seen her for quite a while, not since my first day." I said
"After that day, she took a leave and the Director found it odd as she had just been working for a little over two weeks. So you reported it to the investigators and they began to monitor her movements outside the company. Then they discovered that the opposition had paid her a hefty sum to find out the new project and give it to them, to release it before we could find out or do anything about it."
Money moves people, in my desperate situation I probably would have done the same. It fails to amaze me, when i think about how i even got this job.
"In the end, the release a subpar product. How has the public been reacting to the release?" I asked.
Abeedah replied "Well, I do not have the professional feedback, but i checked on social media, and the people are not too pleased."
Of course.
"So what happens to Precious?"
"She is probably going to be called for query, then fired...probably going to be sued."
"I just started working her recently, but what was she like?"
Peter walked in a said "She was not very efficient and not the most competent secretary. She was also never by the director's side, which was strange. Well, it's explained now anyways."
Abeedah and I glanced at each other before chorusing "Eavesdropping?"
He looked a bit flustered "It is not eavesdropping if it was not intended!"
I laughed loudly "Yeah, you keep telling yourself that, Peter."
Abeedah could not stop laughing.
Peter looked a bit embarassed "Whatever! It is my fault for even volunteering. Mrs. Shalom is calling for both of you. I will not bother myself input in any of your conversations! Hmph!"
Peter, this guy is just hilarious. He has been the best mood lifter in our department. We do need it.
"Okay, Okay. Sorry Peter, we know you did not mean to." I apologized.
"You are forgiven...but Abeedah is still laughing!" He said
"Abeedah! Stop laughing, Peter will soon cry o!"
"I do not cry!" He whined, playfully.
Abeedah did not stop laughing.
"Okay, I will stop laughing. My entire abdominal area is paining me. Sorry, Peter."
Peter finally smiled and returned to his usual composure. "Thank you, ladies. Now let us go now, before our Madam fires us all."
Ah! So true, though. We were laughing for a while.
The three of us made our way to our department's office.
Life in my new workplace keeps getting better.
