Chapter 74 - Chapter 74: A Fortune Earned

Watching Dexter draw his pistol, Peter shook his head and remained seated on the sofa, unfazed.

Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!

Dexter fired five shots in rapid succession, each aimed at Peter's vital points. But the next moment made Dexter's heart sink into despair.

Peter caught all five bullets with one hand.

Then, with a flick of his fingers, he sent them flying back.

Poof! Poof! Poof! Poof! Poof!

Dexter's screams filled the room as the bullets pierced through his limbs, rendering him immobile. The excruciating pain made him collapse to the floor, his breath ragged and filled with agony.

Peter's expression remained calm, indifferent to Dexter's suffering.

"Lai Xuan is waiting in room 404 at the motel. If he doesn't get a response soon, he'll assume things have gone south," Peter said casually. Then, turning to Jack, who was still in shock, he waved his hand.

"Let's go. What are you staring at, Jack? Do you want to be captured and tortured by those savages?"

Peter's words snapped Jack out of his daze. Everything Peter had orchestrated felt like an intricate web, ensnaring everyone except himself.

"Oh! Yeah, let's get out of here!" Jack quickly grabbed the box containing the Relic Chip and hurried toward the exit. Peter followed behind, carrying Adam Heavy Hammer's prosthetic body as if it weighed nothing.

Only Dexter remained in the room, moaning in pain.

Killing him outright might have been a mercy. But Peter figured Arasaka's enforcers would have far worse plans for him.

A Profitable Night

As soon as Peter stepped outside, a familiar voice crackled in his ear.

V: "Peter!"

David: "Brother Peter!"

Peter loaded the prosthetic body into the trunk of the car. Tonight had been extremely lucrative—not only had he received half a million eurodollars from Dexter, but Lai Xuan had also wired him a massive fortune.

One million eurodollars.

Seeing the balance in his account, Peter couldn't help but sigh. Lai Xuan truly was the prince of Arasaka. To him, a million was nothing more than pocket change.

If Peter had relied on regular mercenary jobs, it would have taken countless high-risk missions to earn this much.

Jack let out an excited laugh.

"Haha! Peter, we really hit the jackpot this time! I'll transfer the money to you now, and you decide how we split it!"

True to his word, Jack immediately transferred the 500,000 eurodollars without hesitation. He had absolute trust in Peter.

Peter smiled and said, "300,000 per person. Lai Xuan also gave me an extra million."

Jack's eyes widened in disbelief.

"Three... three hundred thousand?! EACH?!"

David's excitement overwhelmed him, and he fainted with a stupid grin on his face.

Jack, on the other hand, was still trying to process the absurd amount of money.

"Peter, man, Lai Xuan is insanely generous. Just tossing out a million like it's spare change? That guy really is royalty. But... that money was meant for you personally, wasn't it?"

Jack swallowed hard. He wasn't just shocked at Lai Xuan's wealth—he was stunned that Peter was willing to share it.

Most people in Night City wouldn't even consider splitting such a fortune. And yet, Peter had freely offered a share to his team.

Even Jack, who had just transferred the 500,000 to Peter, felt that was different—it was team earnings.

But the million from Lai Xuan? That was a personal reward.

If the roles were reversed, Jack wasn't sure if he could be as generous.

Peter smirked and slapped Jack on the shoulder.

"What are you talking about? We did this job together. As the leader, it's only right that everyone gets a fair cut."

Jack was silent for a moment, then broke into a wide grin.

"You're the boss, Peter. Whatever you say goes!"

With the money in their accounts, Jack started daydreaming about all the ways he could spend it.

Meanwhile, behind them, the motel where they had left Dexter had already been surrounded by Arasaka's forces. There would be no escape for him.

Victor's Clinic

Later that night, inside Victor's clinic, the old ripperdoc stood with his arms crossed, eyes wide in disbelief.

"You actually brought back Adam Heavy Hammer's prosthetic body?" Victor muttered.

Peter grinned and patted the metallic remains.

"Old Vic, can you modify these into regular cyberware?"

Victor chuckled and shook his head.

"Of course I can. These prosthetics are just reinforced with special alloys for added defense—the internal components are still perfectly usable."

Peter nodded in satisfaction before turning to his team.

"Jack, David, V—pick whatever prosthetic upgrades you want. Take your time."

Jack hesitated.

"Peter, my current cyberware is already pretty solid. I don't think I need anything else right now."

David also hesitated.

"Brother Peter, I've already gotten so much from you… I can't take more."

V, on the other hand, wasn't as reserved.

"I'll take the smart weapon targeting system."

She had long since given up on formalities with Peter, knowing their bond was already strong.

Just then, the door burst open, and Lucy ran in.

Her eyes locked onto Peter, and without hesitation, she threw herself into his arms.

"I thought… I thought you weren't coming back," Lucy whispered, her voice trembling. Tears welled up in her eyes.

Peter gently stroked her back.

"I told you, I'm not that easy to get rid of," he said with a smile.

Then, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a special chip.

"I found this while raiding the hacker room in the Cyan Bi Building," Peter said.

Victor took one look at it and nearly dropped his tools.

"Are you serious?! This is a Tier 5 military-grade network surveillance and drive chip!"

Even someone as composed as Victor couldn't hide his shock.

"This thing is top-tier cyberwarfare tech! It's not something you can just buy off the black market!" Victor continued, eyes practically gleaming.

Only elite corporate hackers had access to such technology. People like Arasaka's personal network security officers or Kang Tao's top cyber specialists.

"Guess the raid on the Cyan Bi Building was worth it," Peter said with a smirk.

Victor sighed.

"You have no idea how valuable this is… but Peter, you need to be careful. This kind of tech will put an even bigger target on your back."

Lucy clutched Peter's arm tighter.

"Your safety is what matters most," she whispered.

Jack, standing nearby, watched the scene unfold and let out a knowing chuckle.

Then, he noticed something.

He turned to V and saw her face was far from pleased.

Jack swallowed nervously.

"Uh… I'm a little thirsty. I'm gonna step out and grab some water."

David, noticing the same thing, immediately followed suit.

"Yeah! Me too!"

Victor, ever the observant one, coughed and said, "Oh, right! I just remembered I have something to discuss with Misty. You guys chat—I'll be back later."

Within moments, the clinic was empty, except for Peter, Lucy, and an obviously irritated V.

Peter narrowed his eyes at the three cowards fleeing the scene.

"You guys were just talking my ear off a minute ago. Now you're suddenly thirsty?!"

He gritted his teeth and cursed under his breath.
