I moved slightly in the guest room at the far end of the hall, half awake but feeling the soft vibration. I had slept countless nights in the house and was familiar with the sound of Calvin's phone, brief and peremptory.
I rolled over, trying again to sleep, but the soft murmur of his voice and then Mily's came through the walls. He was tense and she sounded upset.
Something was clearly wrong.
A few minutes afterwards, I could hear him quietly walking in the hallway, and as I got up and went into the living room, he was already dressed, a suitcase sitting next to him. He was looking at his watch and when he looked up, he caught my eyes.
"I need to go to London for a couple of days," he explained. "My company in London is facing a crisis and they need me present ".
I blinked hard, still a little bit groggy. "Oh. That sounds serious."
"It is." He hesitated, his gaze lingering on me. "You'll be okay here?"
