The sound of my phone buzzing dragged me out of a shallow sleep before sunrise.
Bank Alert: Joint Account Suspended – Pending Legal Review.
My thumb hovered over the screen, blinking at the message in disbelief. I hadn't touched that account in months. It was one of the last threads tying Milly and me together financially. I should've shut it down sooner. Now, she was beating me to it.
Then came another notification. And another.
By the time the espresso machine hissed to life in the kitchen, six different accounts were locked—personal, corporate, and even the emergency one I'd set up after my hospital discharge. Frozen. All of them.
My stomach clenched, a thick knot of dread tightening beneath my ribs.
I reached for my robe and headed to the office, dialing Thomas, my attorney, as I walked. He picked up on the second ring, already alert.
