Chapter 18 - We own the night Part 1

Yamamoto Jin

Jin lost his hold and hit the curb first, she crashed into his diaphragm catching him between breathes. Her eyes burst open as if snapping out a nightmare.

Blue eyes, deep and luminescent roamed the world, looking for nothing and everything. Sparks charged up her spine, each burst travelling down a limb, forcing it to twitch. Alive with energy, she smiled, squeezing herself.

Her head bounced around, her toes curled and she breathed just the longest, happiest sigh.

Jin groaned, rolling over to pull himself up. A quiver of sadness and longing rippled through her when his touch left. It was right, but not fair. She shut her eyes, the smallest of smirks forming.

Oblivious, Jin stood, rubbing his arms and legs.

Bending low, he put his arms under her, lifting.

"Okay… Hospital or, what the hell that was."

Paige opened a single eye. They were headed away at a run. Her smile widened, she stretched, twisting into a hug before shaking free.

"Paige. You're okay! That's gr-"

She cut him off, jumping on the spot, finger to his mouth.

"Call me Paula!" she squeaked, giggling constantly.

He hesitated, eyes locking to hers. It was clear by his face a highlight reel of horror movies were playing in his mind. But he hardened, burning the footage.

"Err… Okay… Paula? I'm glad you're okay."

She nodded, her cheeks growing warm, there was a tingle in her chest. The feeling was partly hers; she was on a boat ride traveling with the stream of consciousness, floating down the waters of 'Paige' , there was a rudder, but that would ruin the moment, so she just let the waters flow.

She had her arms behind her back, shoulders bobbing, looking six. Paula observed.

Was she disappointed in Paige? Yes… but no. Who was she to talk?

"Paige… can you walk?" Jin tried.

His brow raised.

Lame.

Clearly there'd be no playing along. A shame, the rivers demanded he get a medal for helping her. Just as lame, and way too accommodating. And why was the flow trying to lead her to play land? Paula could already hear Patience giving her a lecture… as if she were wise.

Paula reached for the rudder. There had to be a path leading to a pleasure that didn't involve balloons. And why on earth would Paige want that? What had gone wrong?

"Not Paige. Paula!" Paula cried out.

She blushed, maybe there was a chance of a more grown up reward. Perhaps… Paige's first kiss?

Maybe more.

Patience would be pissed. Say Paula was 'doing it wrong'. And wasting time. Paige's river delta of a soul was leading straight into 'de Nile' – denial… another good one.

Oh no!

Time had passed with Jin just standing there. Patience would have done better.

"Um… Paula. Is this a part of you forgetting about… Holy fuck!" He yelled.

Behind her, filling the road, was the face of a Chinese dragon.

She half expected a parade to pass with hundreds of feet underneath.

Yup, time had been wasted… Its head swerved and its belly dropped, coming centimetres off the ground, then expanded, filling the road and forcing its legs apart before snapping in, belching fire.
