The car radio played softly in the background, but Mara barely listened until a familiar name caught her attention.
Ethan.
The news anchors were discussing his accident, the details spilling through the speakers. Her fingers tensed against her lap, her heart clenching for just a second.
He was alive. That was all that mattered.
A part of her wanted to say she didn't care. She had told herself over and over again that she was done with him. But hearing about his accident… it was a reminder of how deeply she had been hurt.
She leaned back against the seat, willing herself to forget.
Vera, sharp as ever, noticed the shift in Mara's expression.
"Do you want me to find out how he's doing?" she asked gently.
Mara didn't hesitate. "No. I'm sure he's fine."
Vera studied her for a moment but didn't push. Instead, she nodded and let it go.
Mara exhaled, closing her eyes for a brief second. It doesn't matter anymore.
