Chapter 10 - Reluctant Salvation

- Ronan Hale:

I should have left her. I really should have ignored her after saving her life.

The thought gnaws at me as I tighten the straps on my saddle, hands working with the ease of routine.

The morning air is sharp with the scent of damp earth and smoke from the village behind me—the charred remains of what used to be homes, are now nothing but ruins. The only thing worse than the stench of burned wood is the stench of burned bodies.

I collected most of the bodies to burn them, it was easier than burying each one of them.

There were tens if not hundreds of dead bodies around the village and I was one man.

That was the best I could do.

I exhale through my nose, forcing the images from my mind. I've seen worse. I'll see worse again. That was my life and destiny as a vampire hunter.

What I wasn't expecting to see, however, is her.

The long red-haired woman whom I had saved from the vampires, not a just a woman apparently she was a witch.

Still here.

Still following me.
