Chapter 4 - From the Ashes

My eyes opened in front of a random forest. I took in my immediate surroundings making sure it was safe.

Sensing no danger, I quietly voiced, "Status."

[Mana Absorption (A+):

You constantly absorb mana from your surroundings, passively refueling you. Allowing you to regenerate your energy rapidly, making it almost impossible for you to tire in battle or intense situations.]

[Sixth Sense (C):

A heightened, supernatural awareness that allows the user to perceive hidden threats, unseen entities, and impending danger without relying on conventional senses. This ability grants an instinctual understanding of one's surroundings, enabling the user to detect hostile intent, traps, ambushes, and even distortions in reality.]

[Active Skills:]

[Ki Manipulation (A+) LVL 1/5

An active skill that allows you to create, shape, and manipulate Ki—the vital life-force energy that exists within all living beings. Ki Users manipulate their Life Energy to fly, shoot Ki Blasts, sense living creatures and enhance their physical attributes far beyond normal limits. The higher the level, the easier it is to use.]

[Mana Burst (A+):

A powerful technique that converts mana into pure force, momentarily amplifying the user's physical capabilities beyond natural limits. By expending Mana (MP), you gain an immense boost to strength, agility, and durability. The magnitude and duration of the enhancement depend on the amount of mana consumed. When it is activated an Aura bursts outwards from your body.]

[Hybrid Skills:]

[Master of Martial Arts (A)

This skill represents a martial artist who has transcended the limits of conventional human combat but has not yet reached the divine level. The user has attained profound expertise in multiple martial arts beyond black belt level, integrating them seamlessly into their combat style.]

[Racial Skills:]

[Saiyan Power (B):

Often called Zenkai Boosts, Saiyan Power is the power that allows a Saiyan to recover from harm in relatively short periods of time. During which, the Saiyan will imprint on the injuries and/or experiences and instantly learn from it. As it does, their minds and body adapt to the said struggles, allowing their instinctual methods and natural resistance to noticeably improve, which also increases their physical might and general efficiency as they recover, thereby lessening the chances of the problem happening again.

When recovering from battle, you can gain a boost to your stats, either percentage wise or multiplied though the latter only happens with luck.]

[Oozaru (C+) LVL 1/3:

The Oozaru is a Saiyan exclusive transformation similar to Werewolves where in order for the transformation to take place, the Saiyan needs to have a tail, as the biochemical glands responsible for initiating the transformation are located exclusively there. The Saiyan also needs to absorb at least 17 million zeno units of Blutz Waves through the retina of the eyes to initiate the transformation. Blutz Waves are found only in sunlight reflected by a moon. If there is no moon, a planetary body will reflect the same number of rays and initiate the transformation.

An Oozaru's power is equal to the Saiyan's power level prior to the transformation multiplied by ten.

The colour for the Great Ape's fur is brown and their eyes are red as well. A Saiyan loses the ability to reason in this form, and will typically display berserk and destructive characteristics. Despite the lack of self-awareness, as Saiyans mature, they can potentially be taught how to rein in their instincts and retain normal cognitive functions as an Oozaru.]

Being curious I checked and confirmed the existence of a menu.

[Menu:]

I tapped on racial traits curious to learn more. Especially since I had a Skill I shouldn't have.

[Race: Saiyan.

Traits of a Saiyan:

You have a Tail which serves as a Drawback as the tail is a weak point, though this can be an extra limb in fighting. If you tail is cut off, you lose half of all your current Stats and ? becomes extremely strenous to use.

You are almost always in your prime fighting shape, with rapid deterioration beginning at the age of 80 or beyond.

Your body can create a new transformation if you are a hybrid with some other race as Saiyans bodies are known to have a biology related to transformations.

HP goes up by 200 for every point in Vigor

MP goes up by 100 for every point in Intelligence.

You have an easier time learning anything related to Fighting.

You gain the Active Skill (Ki Manipulation] straight away.

You have typical Racial Skills belonging to Saiyan's.]

So, that's how…

I sighed.

Right, what world am I in?

But I want to learn about the system since I have an opportunity to.

I was pulled out of my thoughts as my body screamed at me to duck. I did so instantly. Barely avoiding a claw from a creature that leapt at me.

A blur of black and white surged toward me, claws glinting in the dim forest light. My body screamed at me to move, instincts firing on all cylinders. I barely ducked in time, feeling the wind from the creature's strike brush against my hair.

I twisted, eyes locking onto the thing that attacked me.

A Beowulf.

Of course.

Because of course this had to be RWBY.

A wave of annoyance crashed through me, almost overwhelming my focus. If I could kill whoever wrote this world, I would.

Everything about it pissed me off—the power scaling, the inconsistent writing, the forced drama. Ruby Rose had never faced a single real challenge to her mindset. She was coddled, pampered, and treated like some kind of untouchable saint. Meanwhile, the villains—outside of Salem and Ozpin's reincarnations—were incompetent at best and laughably written at worst.

I'd seen fan rewrites that handled this world better.

But right now?

Right now, I had something to execute.

The Beowulf snarled, its crimson eyes glowing with mindless aggression. It lunged again, slashing horizontally.

I leaned back just enough to let the claws pass in front of me. They carved deep into a nearby tree with a sickening shhk!

I kicked off the ground, testing my agility. My body responded instantly, moving smoothly, powerfully. The Beowulf charged after me, but it was slow—predictable.

I sidestepped its next lunge and twisted on my heel, bringing my elbow down like a hammer into the back of its skull.

CRACK.

The Grimm staggered back, dazed but still standing.

Right. No weapons. That was annoying.

The Beowulf let out a furious snarl and swiped at me again. This time, I caught its wrist mid-swing, gripping it tight. It tried to pull away, but I was stronger.

My instincts screamed at me to finish it.

And then, something clicked.

MP.

It wasn't just stamina or strength. It was something deeper, more primal.

I focused on it. Pulled at it. Compressed it.

A faint warmth gathered in my palm, then a tiny flicker of light. A sphere of energy, small but dense, appeared just above my fingers.

A Ki blast.

I didn't hesitate.

With a flick of my wrist, I slammed the blast directly into the Beowulf's chest.

BOOM!

The explosion wasn't huge, but it didn't need to be. The Beowulf's upper body practically disintegrated, leaving behind only a pair of twitching legs before they collapsed into a pile of dissolving black mist.

[Beowulf (F-Rank) Defeated.]

[EXP Gained: 100]

[Level Up!]

[Stat Points Gained: 10]

I exhaled slowly, flexing my fingers as the last traces of Grimm vanished. That had been… easy.

Too easy.

And yet, I had no idea how strong I actually was.

I turned my palm upward, watching the faint remnants of energy flicker before fading. The power was there. Waiting for me to understand it. To master it.

I wasn't just in RWBY.

I was going to break RWBY.

But first, I needed to figure out where in the timeline I was.

"Menu."

I then tapped world details.

[RWBY]

[Current Timeline: 5 weeks before Ruby Rose enters Beacon.]

I didn't bother reading anything else. I had a full month to enter Beacon… but to do so… no, I would have no choice.

I heard the sounds of several more Beowulfs and sighed.

More animals ripe for the fucking slaughter.

I held my hand out, focusing and with some effort I had 5 Ki blasts hovering over all 5 fingers. The second the Beowulfs appeared I fired my attack.

The five Ki blasts tore through the air, streaking toward the incoming pack of Beowulfs like miniature comets. Their glowing trails illuminated the darkened forest, casting eerie shadows against the trees.

BOOM!

BOOM!

BOOM!

Each shot found its mark. Two of the Grimm exploded instantly, reduced to nothing but black mist. The other three staggered, injured but not yet dead. One had lost an arm, another had a gaping hole in its torso, and the last was limping, its left leg partially obliterated.

I sighed. "Tch. Sloppy."

I flexed my fingers, testing my energy reserves. My MP barely even moved. Good. My regeneration rate was keeping up. That meant I could keep going all night if I had to.

The remaining Beowulfs snarled and charged.

I moved forward to meet them.

The first lunged. I sidestepped and grabbed its head with one hand. My fingers clenched, and with a sickening CRUNCH, I crushed its skull like a soda can.

The next swung its claws. I caught its wrist, twisted sharply, and tore the entire limb off in one clean motion. The creature let out a guttural howl before I slammed my fist through its chest and pulled out its spine for good measure.

The last one hesitated.

Smart.

I shot forward, appearing in front of it in an instant. Its red eyes barely had time to widen before my knee drove upward, smashing through its lower jaw and sending its skull flying off like a kicked football.

[Ding! X5 Beowulf (F-Rank) Defeated.]

[EXP Gained: 500]

[Level Up X2!]

[Stat Points Gained: 20]

I sighed, after that I had realised I needed to make my way to a city.

But of course life had other plans.

A notification appeared.

[Your combat performance has unlocked a new passive skill:]

[Efficient Execution (C).

You conserve stamina and energy more effectively while fighting, reducing the cost of techniques and increasing reaction speed in prolonged engagements.]

That wasn't my only issue though as it turns out: I gained this body's memories.

(Third Person POV)

Kaelith had been nothing special—a mid-class Saiyan warrior, strong enough to survive but not remarkable enough to matter. That was why she was still alive. The elites were too arrogant to see it coming, and the low-class grunts were too weak to do anything about it. But she? She had just enough brains to put the pieces together.

Frieza's orders had been too convenient. Recall the Saiyans. Gather on Planet Vegeta. No upcoming missions, no real explanation. Just an insistence that they all return home. At first, she hadn't wanted to believe it. Why would their "ally" betray them? But the rumors had been spreading for years—the whispers of a "Super Saiyan," of Frieza's growing paranoia, of the king's desperate, useless attempts to appease him.

So she ran.

It wasn't some grand escape. She didn't fight her way off-world, didn't steal some experimental craft in a blaze of glory. No, she simply requisitioned a standard spacepod under the excuse of an off-world mission. No one batted an eye. Why would they? She wasn't important enough to be noticed. The moment she left the planet's atmosphere, she disabled the tracker and set her course toward the farthest reaches of the galaxy. She was a coward. She admitted it. But she was a smart coward.

And then everything went to hell.

One second, she had been soaring through space, the hum of the pod's systems the only sound in the vacuum. The next? A blinding tear in reality itself, like the universe had just snapped. A surge of energy ripped through her pod, alarms blaring, sparks flying. Gravity twisted and fractured in ways it shouldn't have. The ship groaned, metal warping, the navigation systems losing their minds.

She barely had time to scream before the world inverted, her body yanked through something that wasn't space, and then—

Impact.

Kaelith crashed, the remains of her space pod disintegrating around her. Fire, smoke, the acrid scent of burnt wiring. She gasped for air, her body aching, her vision swimming. She was alive. Somehow. But this wasn't the galaxy she knew. The sky was wrong. The energy in the air was different. Heavier. Unfamiliar.

But, she did not last much longer... she flew to a random area of the forest, unable to find food and died. That was then when our resident protagonist took over her body.

Of course, her armour was mostly destroyed, but it worked in her favour.

(Back to Kaelith)

Could the backstory be more generic? Nope, that's because it was completely generic.

Great, not only am I in RWBY, but I'm a Saiyan with a tragic backstory? Could this be more cliché?

Worse yet was those memories are memorised by my Axiom Memory now.

I calmed myself, and sighed.

Now let's go find civilisation...

Oh, I need money first...

[Quest Generated: Kill 15 Grimm with Ki blasts]

[Kill 15 Grimm with Ki blasts: 0/15 killed

Rewards:

250 EXP

5000 Lien

New Saiyan Armour]

Convenient.

Wait did the System wait until now to give me that quest?

I sighed, and decided to start work on the quest.

I sighed, rolling my shoulders as I prepared to hunt down more Grimm. At least the system had the decency to hand out money—though I'd be having words with it later about its timing.

Alright, fifteen Grimm, Ki blasts only. Shouldn't be too hard.

The forest around me was dense, the canopy overhead allowing only fragmented light to pierce through, casting shifting shadows across the undergrowth. The eerie silence of the place told me what I already suspected—Grimm were nearby.

I took a slow breath, then focused.

[Sixth Sense (C) has detected multiple hostile entities nearby.]

I closed my eyes and let the skill do its work.

Three Beowulfs. No, four. A pack. Not surprising. These things were bottom-feeder Grimm, barely worth being called threats. But the system wanted a body count, so a body count it would get.

I crouched slightly, energy surging through my muscles as I leaped into the trees. My agility stat carried me high, branches barely rustling under my landing. From this vantage point, I spotted them—hulking, shadowy figures prowling through the underbrush, red eyes glowing with that ever-present, mindless malice.

I grinned.

"Alright, let's see how well you guys handle this."

I held out both hands, gathering my energy. The Ki flowed naturally, effortlessly, like breathing. Bright blue spheres of power flickered to life in my palms, humming with potential destruction.

The Grimm below must have sensed something, because their heads snapped up, growls rising in their throats. But they had no time to react.

I thrust my right hand forward then my left thrusted after it. One was faster, and that was my left. The 2 merged, and triggered a...

BO0000M!

A small, but significantly larger explosion of bluish Ki burst out. This was bigger then one a single blast could make. And thus it tore through them with ease.

[Ding! X4 Beowulf (F-Rank) Defeated.]

[EXP Gained: 400]

[Level Up!]

[Stat Points Gained: 10]

I exhaled, shaking out my hands. My MP? Barely touched. Basic Ki blasts were disgustingly efficient.

But using that took at least 75 MP. As I had to make one faster than the other to trigger that explosion thus I poured slightly more energy into it.

Thank you Vegeta for showing that in the Anime. As thanks I'll call that... "Galactic Burst".

Shaking out my hands as the last traces of Grimm dissolved into the air.

"Alright. That worked."

The explosion had done its job—four down, eleven to go. And it barely put a dent in my energy reserves. My MP was already regenerating, making me feel like I hadn't even exerted myself. If this was how efficient I was starting out, then I was going to be absolutely disgusting once I leveled up properly.

I leapt off the tree branch, landing softly on the forest floor. The air was thick with the fading stench of Grimm, but more were bound to show up. These things had an annoying habit of being drawn to negative emotions, and I had plenty of those to go around.

I rolled my shoulders and started walking, keeping my senses sharp. My Sixth Sense was doing most of the work, pinging faint alerts in my head whenever something hostile got close. It was weird, like an instinctual radar that didn't rely on sight or sound.

Sure enough, it wasn't long before I felt more presences lurking nearby.

I crouched behind a tree, peering through the underbrush. Two Ursa this time. Bigger than Beowulfs, bulkier, and a little tougher, but still F-rank trash mobs in the grand scheme of things.

I held up a hand, forming another pair of Ki blasts. But instead of immediately throwing them, I let the energy build, letting it flow naturally. If Kaelith's memories taught me anything…

I didn't need to force it. I just had to remember.

The energy waves came easily, almost instinctively. As if my body already knew the motion, the control, the technique—like I'd done it a thousand times before. The moment I let go, the two waves surged forward in perfect sync, effortless, precise.

This wasn't something I had to learn. I already knew it.

[Ding! Ki Manipulation Skill LVL 1 → 2]

[You can now sense Ki.]

Their bodies vanished as the wave tore into them, evaporating them.

[Ding! X2 Ursa (F-Rank) Defeated.]

[EXP Gained: 400]

So they were 2x more Experience heavy then Beowulf's.

I ended the flow of energy, letting the Ki dissipate.

I closed my eyes, feeling the Ki around me.

I then decided that, if 'my' memories were that valuable, then I'll use them.

I concentrated, pushing Ki or MP in this case down, through my feet creating a sort of lift that... slowly let me hover. Taking the lessons of Ki Control from the anime into account, I focused this almost like an engine would. Forcing the air beneath me away.

Without warning, I was lifted into the air weightlessly. I was just using my energy to create an engine that lifted me up, and allowed me to fly.

It sounds idiotic but learning to fly was simple. You don't know how? Just lift yourself into the air. That's what I was doing, like describing how to walk, put one leg in front of the other. It explains the process but not the details of how it works.

The process of your muscles contracting, bending the knee whilst balancing your body so you don't fall over. That wasn't something one needed to explain, an individual could just do it.

A baby would try and say your a horrible teacher, someone without legs might also say that, but even then, a baby would learn it for themselves. Though for that baby they would still have undeveloped muscles.

Anyways, feeling the energy surrounding me as it went from my feet to all around me holding me up was an odd feeling. One that was alike a forcefield holding my body up, though without pulling me like I was inside something. It felt almost natural, like moving my arms, it wasn't a pulling sensation in my bones. I also flied faster as I increased the Ki output as I found out.

I intended to move further upwards, and thus I did. I deduced that with intent I could choose the direction, thus I began to fly around all around in a gyroscopic manner.

I liked this feeling, flying around and simply enjoying the freedom that comes with it. Truly it was freeing. I began to shadowbox in the air, with various martial arts I've learned in my time. It was simply because I needed to relearn the movements and fit them in with my new body.

As for the Shadow Boxing itself, I was facing one of my old instructors back in the White Room. I had their movements adapted to flight based combat to help me with my own. Since my own mind could figure out how it all worked.

I blocked a strike, and countered, blocked, countered, dodged, countered. All of this was done with the idea that I grew in my skills in fighting. A low kick, to a high kick. A palm strike blocked.

It all worked well. I adapted to combat in the air, quickly, perhaps due to this body being one of a warriors by nature, it was innate within me to become a great warrior. Thus I would.

After about 20 minutes of this, I began to just learn to fly properly. Aerodynamically, like a fighter jet. But I began to realise one issue.

My MP reserves were rapidly depleting. It drained a bit of MP to maintain my flight and thus I floated down to the ground, deciding to walk and conserve my MP. Even if it regenerated quickly, I didn't want to be caught off guard.

So, the logical move was land and walk.

9 left right? Let's get hunting.
