The room was dark but it was warmer than the cool dungeon she spent nights in.
Genevieve turned over to the other side of the bed as she slowly opened her eyes only to meet a bright light coming from the candlestick. She blinked a few times and after rolling restless she sat up as the memories of what happened flooded back into her hand.
"I'm alive. No, wait. Father, is he okay?" She tried to stand up but fell back to the bed. She felt light headed and her head was throbbing so hard she had wrinkles on her forehead.
"He saved me." She smiled for the first time and she felt like he cared.
She felt bad about how she treated him in the past. "I should thank him." She gave a weak smile and stood up from the bed only to see her maid sitting on a stool at the centre of the door.
"My lady you are awake." She ran to her.
"Alice, you are here." Genevieve hugged her; she never thought she was going to see her ever again.
Yes, Alice was just her maid but Alice meant a lot to Genevieve. To Genevieve she was the sister she never had.
"The king asked me to wait here until you wake up, he said to make sure you finish your meal." She smiled and brought a tray filled of different dishes to Genevieve and kept it on the side table.
She helped her clean up and after she was done Genevieve made sure to put on a black dress. She knew it was his favorite dress and for some reason she just wanted to please and impress him.
After she was done with a meal she layed back on the bed too weak to do something else.
"My lady, should I report to the king? He was really worried." Alice smiled and Genevieve nodded.
Just as Alice was about to push the door open. Slam!
"Ah!" Alice stumbled backwards at the sight of the knife being thrown at the door.
They both turned towards where the knife flew from only to see Alaric climbing into the room from the window.
"What in heaven's name are you doing here Alaric?" Genevieve frowned as she asked him but got no response, just a half-cooked smile on his face.
"My lady, should I get the king?" Alice asked.
"No!" Genevieve exclaimed.
She knew how mad the king was when he had seen her with Alaric and she couldn't afford to risk it.
"I see you have missed me my lady… Funny enough I did miss you too and couldn't stop myself from coming to see you." Alaric said, he was now standing in her room.
"You did not answer my question Lord Alaric." She muttered without flinching, her voice as fierce as never before.
"I guess you have lost your sense of romance My lady, but do not worry I will teach you after I take you out of here." He smiled walking towards her.
"Alaric spare me your lies, what makes you think that I would ever believe you? You rejected me, remember? Only the gods know why you keep coming back." Genevieve frowned; she was still feeling weak and was not ready for this argument.
"Why?" One moment he was beside the bed and the next he stood beside her. "Do you think I would take a no for an answer?" He grasped her by the neck as he muttered. He tilted his head to the side.
"Let her go!" Alice tried to pull him off Genevieve but he threw her across the room.
"Let me go!" Genevieve struggled seeing Alice go unconscious.
"What have you done!" She cried out.
"This is me giving you an opportunity to escape… Do you not want to leave this life?" He questioned but she did not answer but kept struggling.
"Do you think he wants you? He only wants to use you… you are just a naive girl, what do you know about politics?" He smirked letting go of her neck.
He leaned towards her.
"You think I am the demon but your dear mate is the real enemy. He would kill you like his first wife just after he is done with you." He murmured, his lips close to her ears.
"And you think you are better?" She spat at him.
"Yes, don't you see I love you? Why would I be here asking you to be my mistress if I do not love you?" Genevieve ran over to Alice as he continued, "I promise I would protect everyone you love including your father. Just come with me." He sure knew how to get to her. Her father was the most important to her at the moment and he knew it.
"I can not do this please just leave me be!" She said and ran towards the door.
This time he did not stop her. "Do not come back running when you see the king as he truly is. A selfish monster, that is what he is." With that he turned around and walked towards the window.
"Oh my god Alice," she ran back to her in panic.
She patted her a few times on the face and when she did not walk up she ran out of the room.
She wanted to tell the king what Alaric had said to her. She wanted to hear him tell her that he was never going to leave her.
"My lady." A maid bowed as she passed the hallway.
"Where is the king?" She asked.
"The king is in a meeting with the elders." She bowed and walked away.
"Wait!" She called her back, "in my room my maid, Alice is unconscious please attend to her." She said and continued in her motion.
As much as she wanted to be there with Alice at this time she wanted the king to know about Alaric. She couldn't afford to be accused of having an affair again.
"She is worthless, how can she possibly plan to overthrow me?" Just as she got the the meeting room she heard the king's voice.
"My king, do you not feel like you are being too nice to her? There are witnesses and proof of her betrayal." It was the elder Thomas' voice.
"I have a reason and you do not have the right to question me, do you?" Elder Thomas shivered probably remembering how he lost his finger.
"This does not concern you, your highness, if you can not make the right decision we have to help you. That is why we were appointed as elders." It was the man from the court that said this.
"You have to annul the mate bond and allow her to face the execution."
