Chapter 10 - Chapter 10

Four years ago, Lenny and his fellow guards were gearing up for another day at the office. They knew each other well, because the company was just starting out. It was a beautiful spring morning. The boss walked in and upon seeing the grim expression on his face, everyone quieted down and turned their attention to him.

"Last night, we lost one of our own." He started. The guards glanced around to try and find the missing person, the one that they had lost. "It hasn't been on the news yet, since it is an ongoing investigation with high stakes. But we lost Douggy last night." Lenny's boss continued. A shadow of sadness covered the group. Each guards mouth was set in a grim line as the realiteit set in. He had a newborn daughter and toddler son that would never see their father again and would have to face life without him.

The job was a dangerous one, Lenny thought as he walked through the halls. Although it was a high stake investigation, it went dead as if Douggy was just another John Doe. The odd thing was, his uniform was never recovered. It was speculated that the ocean took it, since he had washed up on the beach. But that never sat right with Lenny. He sighed, running his fingers over the badge once more.

Due to the incident, Lenny and the team got proper training that had saved their lives countless times. The loss of Douggy's life was the turning point of the company. His sacrifice had saved many. Lenny sighed out loud. He knew that this badge would somehow be linked to that of Abigail's disappearance and it would tarnish a good name. Mrs. Doug and the kids had finally moved on with their lives and this incident would bring back the hurt of their loss.

In the apartment, it was silent except for the breathing and humming of the appliances and the rapid and irregular clicks of the computer mouse. Audrey was looking through the database of the security company and that of the prisons in the area.

She felt like she had to do something to help even if it was a desperate attempt and grasping at straws. She was the only one who had seen the abductor and the temporary guard.

Audrey decided to call it a night after her efforts did not bare any fruits. She could not escape the two men even in her dreams as she was forced to relive the event over and over through a series of nightmares.
