Chapter 196 - Chapter 196: Awards Ceremony

[Chapter 196: Awards Ceremony]

After chatting for a few minutes, the 51st Golden Globe Awards ceremony commenced.

The Golden Globes, established in 1943 and organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, stood as one of the most significant awards in American film and television. There were 24 awards in total -- 13 for films and 11 for television. The film categories were divided into two main sections: drama -- best film, best actor and actress -- and comedy or musical -- best film, best actor and actress, alongside other categories for best director, supporting actors, and best screenplay.

Last year, Guess Pictures released five films. Although some performed well at the box office, the artistic merit was not high, with only The Wedding Banquet receiving a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.

After more than three hours of deliberation, the winners of each category were announced. Schindler's List, which was released at the end of last year, managed to secure three wins out of six nominations, taking home Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay, becoming the biggest winner of the Golden Globes this year.

The comedy film Mrs. Doubtfire, starring Robin Williams, won Best Picture in the comedy or musical category, along with Best Actor, making it the second biggest winner.

Tom Hanks, for his brilliant performance in Philadelphia, triumphed over heavyweights like Daniel Day-Lewis, Harrison Ford, Anthony Hopkins, and Liam Neeson to win Best Actor in a drama. Winona Ryder won Best Supporting Actress for her work in the film The Age of Innocence.

...

"Ha ha, Link, it's been a while since I saw you; I didn't expect you'd come to the Golden Globes," Harvey Weinstein said as he approached with his trophy.

"I'm just here with Monica for a little walk. Congratulations on your win," Link replied, shaking his hand.

"Ha ha, this is a trophy I'm picking up for them; you know I don't need this." Harvey chuckled as he handed the trophy to his assistant.

Last year, Miramax released nine films, with three nominated for Golden Globes and securing eleven total nominations -- Farewell My Concubine, one; The Piano, seven; and The Three Colors Trilogy: Blue, three.

With Farewell My Concubine winning Best Foreign Language Film and The Piano winning Best Actress in a drama, it marked a significant achievement for the studio. Miramax and Harvey Weinstein had become one of the focal points of the awards ceremony.

"Link, I heard you finished your new film; when does The Butterfly Effect start shooting?" Harvey sat down in an empty chair.

"The new film isn't edited yet, so post production will take over a month. I probably won't be free to shoot until around April or May," Link explained.

"Well then, besides The Butterfly Effect, do you have any other film projects in mind?" Harvey said with a smile while puffing on a cigarette. "You know, even though I'm not a director, I have my ways of working the awards scene. I've heard you want to win an Oscar for Best Director -- if you collaborate with me a few more times, I guarantee you'll become the youngest Best Director in Oscar history."

"That sounds great; I look forward to working with you," Link nodded and smiled, engaging with Harvey about the marketing campaign for Pulp Fiction.

...

That film finished production at the end of last year. Due to scheduling conflicts, its release was pushed back to April. In the previous two weeks, Quentin Tarantino had brought Pulp Fiction to the Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Golden Bear for Best Director.

After winning the award, Quentin made a point to stop by Guess Pictures and show off the trophy to Link, just like a fisherman wanting to flaunt his catch to fellow anglers. Pulp Fiction received rave reviews during the festival and was praised by many European media outlets.

Miramax was confident about the film's box office potential and decided to ramp up marketing efforts. Guess Pictures would support their initiatives.

...

After saying goodbye to Harvey, Link and Monica mingled at the party, congratulating director Steven Spielberg for Best Director, Tom Hanks for Best Actor in Drama, Robin Williams for Best Actor in a Comedy, and Winona Ryder for Best Supporting Actress.

Link also discussed potential collaborations with several attendees.

Guess Pictures, after integrating its operations with Good Machine and Trimark Pictures, had seen its production and distribution capabilities soar tenfold, becoming one of the most formidable independent film studios.

If any of these people had films that the major studios were reluctant to back, they could certainly consider Guess Pictures.

Though Guess Pictures was an independent studio, last year it had seen all six of its released films achieve significant box office success, with total earnings rivaling those of the major studios.

Currently, with resources and talent at their disposal, Guess Pictures was an excellent collaboration partner.
