Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: Growing Pains

The bustling training hall was filled with activity, but Ling felt strangely isolated as he watched his fellow awakened individuals honing their skills. Despite his recent successes, a wave of self-doubt washed over him, leaving him questioning his abilities and purpose.

He glanced at the holographic interface shimmering before him:

[Ling Chen]

Strength: 12

Agility: 14

Intelligence: 17

Potential: Infinite

Skills:

Light Burst – Level 3

Absorption Log: Energy Residue (Lesser Crystal Beast), Enhanced Reflexes (Void Imp)

"I've gotten stronger," he thought, "but is it enough? Am I truly making a difference?"

He had been praised for his unique talent—the Infinite Ascension System—and its potential to grow without limits. Yet, he struggled to shake off the feeling that he was falling short of expectations. Was he truly worthy of this power?

"Ling? You okay?" Mei Lin's voice broke through his thoughts. She approached him with concern etched on her face. "You've been quiet all morning."

"I'm fine," he replied, forcing a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. "Just… thinking."

"About what?" she pressed gently, knowing him too well to be fooled.

"About whether I'm really cut out for this," Ling admitted, finally letting his guard down. "Everyone else seems so confident in their abilities, but I still feel like I'm stumbling around in the dark."

Mei Lin placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. "You're not alone in feeling that way," she said softly. "We all have our doubts. But what matters is that we keep trying—that we support each other."

Ling appreciated her words but couldn't shake off the nagging feeling that he was somehow different from everyone else. He had been chosen to wield this incredible power—yet he felt lost and uncertain about what to do with it.

As they watched Kai Zhang effortlessly maneuver through a series of combat drills, Ling couldn't help but compare himself to his friend. Kai was naturally skilled and confident; he seemed to thrive under pressure.

"He makes it look so easy," Ling muttered under his breath.

"Don't compare yourself to others," Mei Lin said firmly. "We all have our own strengths and weaknesses. What matters is how we use them."

Just then, Professor Armitage approached them, his expression serious. "Ling, I need to speak with you."

Ling felt a surge of anxiety as he followed Armitage to a quiet corner of the training hall. What was this about? Had he done something wrong?

"I've been observing your progress," Armitage said, his gaze piercing but not unkind. "You have a remarkable talent, Ling—one that could potentially change the course of history."

Ling's heart raced at the weight of those words. He had suspected as much, but hearing it directly from Armitage was overwhelming.

"However," Armitage continued, "I sense that you're struggling with self-doubt. You need to understand that power comes with responsibility. You can't let fear hold you back."

"I know," Ling replied quietly. "But it's hard."

"I understand," Armitage said, nodding sympathetically. "But you must trust in yourself. You were chosen for a reason. You have the potential to achieve great things—to protect those you care about and make a real difference in this world."

With that, Armitage handed him a small, ancient-looking tome. "I want you to study this. It contains knowledge about wielding power and facing difficult choices. It might help you find your path."

Ling accepted the tome with gratitude, feeling a glimmer of hope ignite within him once more. He looked up at Armitage with newfound determination. "Thank you, Professor. I won't let you down."

As Armitage walked away, Ling opened the tome and began to read. The words seemed to resonate with him on a deeper level—a blend of philosophy and practical advice that helped him understand the true meaning of power.

He spent the rest of the day studying the tome, immersing himself in its teachings. He learned about the importance of balance, the dangers of arrogance, and the need to always prioritize the well-being of others.

By evening, he felt a sense of clarity he hadn't experienced in days. He had been so focused on mastering his abilities that he had forgotten why he had chosen this path in the first place—to protect those he loved and make a positive impact on the world.

"Ling?" Mei Lin approached him again, her expression concerned. "Are you feeling better?"

"Yeah," he replied, smiling genuinely this time. "I think I am. Thank you for being there for me."

He closed the tome and stood tall, his doubts replaced with newfound determination. He knew he still had much to learn, but he was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead—together with his friends.

As they left the training hall together, Ling looked up at the night sky, feeling a sense of purpose wash over him. He was no longer just a hesitant teenager grappling with his powers; he was a hero in the making—a beacon of hope for a world in need.

But little did he know that their next mission would test them beyond their limits—forcing them to confront not just their own fears but also the darkness lurking within others.
