Chapter 5 - the haunting discovery

The morning sun streamed through the tall windows of the cafeteria, casting long, soft beams of light onto the diverse group of students gathered inside. Among them were Enid and Yoko, walking side by side, deep in conversation. "Another Wednesday, huh?" Bianca remarked with a roll of her eyes as she followed Enid into the breakfast line. Lunette, joining the group, responded with a casual shrug. "Well, I wouldn't say that," she said with a slight smile. "She scared the crap out of me," Bianca added, her voice tinged with a mix of disbelief and fear. Enid chuckled, grabbing a plate from the counter. "She's just... intense. You'll get used to it." Lunette, opting for a bagel, gave a nonchalant shrug. "I'm not here to make friends." Bianca, intrigued, eyed her. "So, what's your deal, then?" Lunette met her gaze with a level stare, her expression calm and collected. "I needed a change of scenery. And this place is definitely... different." Enid nudged Lunette playfully. "Trust me, you'll fit right in."

The four girls made their way to a round table, where Wednesday Addams was already seated, engrossed in a book. Bianca, with a sly grin, looked over and muttered, "Speak of the devil." Enid, ever the optimist, greeted Wednesday warmly. "Hi, Wednesday!" Bianca, still curious about Lunette, asked, "So, Lunette, how's Nevermore treating you so far?" Lunette gave a vague response, "It's... different. But hey, what's life without a little weirdness?" Wednesday, who had been quietly observing, commented in her signature monotone, "Sometimes difference isn't a bad thing. Whether you like it or not, you'll get used to being here." Bianca raised an eyebrow in mock surprise. "Wow, she said something nice. Didn't see that coming." Lunette rolled her eyes, smirking. "Guess miracles do happen." Enid grinned, nudging Lunette. "See? You'll fit in just fine."

Bianca, clearly intrigued by Lunette's nonchalant attitude, smirked and asked, "So, what do you like to do besides rolling your eyes every five minutes?" Lunette responded with a shrug, "I like reading, writing, and baking sometimes. I also have a thing for paranormal stuff." Bianca's interest piqued. "Paranormal stuff, huh? Guess that fits right in around here." Lunette grinned. "Yeah, because being normal is so overrated." Enid laughed. "You'll definitely fit in. Maybe you and Wednesday can have a sarcastic-off." Wednesday, without lifting her eyes from her book, replied dryly, "I'd win." Lunette smirked in response. "We'll see about that."

A new voice suddenly interrupted the conversation. "Now that's something I'd pay to see," a boy said, strolling up to the table and sitting next to Bianca. "I'm Xavier," he introduced himself with a grin, offering Lunette a quick handshake. Lunette, barely masking her irritation, replied coolly, "I'm Lunette." Xavier, undeterred by her cold reception, continued with enthusiasm, "So, Lunette, are you into the paranormal? We've got plenty of that around here." Lunette, shrugging, answered, "Yeah, it's interesting. Adds a little excitement to my day." Xavier, clearly excited, responded with a grin, "Trust me, you won't be bored here." Bianca, noticing the slight tension in the air, quickly jumped in to change the subject. "Great, now we've got two people obsessed with the paranormal." Lunette rolled her eyes. "Wonderful."

"Hey, I'm just saying, it's better than being normal," Xavier remarked with a playful grin. Enid, sensing the awkwardness, tried to lighten the mood. "Well, at least we know we'll never have a dull moment with this group." Lunette muttered, "Yeah, sure." Xavier leaned in closer to Bianca, adding, "Looking forward to seeing what kind of trouble we can stir up this year." Bianca, always ready for adventure, suggested, "Well, we could check out the old haunted library." Wednesday, without looking up from her book, flatly responded, "Already checked. Not haunted at all." Lunette, ever the skeptic, smirked. "Figures. A place like this should at least have a decent haunting." Bianca, not missing a beat, suggested, "Well, tomorrow we can go into the forest." Lunette raised an eyebrow. "Why?" "There's a carnival happening tomorrow night," Bianca replied with a grin. Enid, quick to point out the rules, reminded them, "But we're not allowed to." Bianca shrugged. "The teachers won't be paying attention."

As the bell rang, signaling the start of first period, the group waved off Bianca and Xavier, who were headed to class. Lunette, walking briskly across the courtyard, focused on getting to class on time. The morning sun cast long shadows, but she was lost in her thoughts. Suddenly, a voice interrupted her, taunting, "Hey, freak, where do you think you're going?" Lunette turned to see two boys approaching her, their faces filled with malice. She sighed, not in the mood for confrontation. "Just leave me alone," she said, trying to remain calm. One of the boys sneered, "Oh, we're just getting started." He shoved her, causing her to stumble back. "Back off," Lunette warned, her voice steady and cold. The first boy laughed. "Or what? You gonna cast a spell on us?" Lunette felt a surge of anger bubbling within her. Her fists clenched, a strange heat pulsing through her veins. "I said, leave me alone," she repeated, her voice dark and menacing.

The second boy grabbed her arm roughly. "Make us." Without thinking, Lunette's vision darkened, and an overwhelming power surged through her. In an instant, her hand shot forward, striking the boy's chest with force, sending him flying backward. The first boy's eyes widened in shock, but he quickly recovered, pulling out a small knife. "You'll pay for that," he snarled, lunging at her. In one swift motion, Lunette caught his wrist in a vice-like grip, her eyes glowing a deep, demonic red. She twisted his arm, forcing him to drop the knife, which clattered to the ground. The boy cried out in pain, but Lunette didn't stop. A surge of uncontrollable power overtook her.

With another flick of her wrist, she slashed the air, and the boy's screams echoed through the courtyard as his hand was severed, blood splattering across the cobblestones. His detached hand landed with a sickening thud as he collapsed to the ground, writhing in agony. The second boy, trembling in fear, whispered, "What the hell are you?" Lunette took a deep breath, trying to regain control over the demonic energy still coursing through her. "Finestra umbra, corpus in auras," she intoned, her voice steady but dark. The dark mist swirled around the courtyard, and the first boy was lifted into the air, hanging upside down by an invisible force. He kicked helplessly as blood continued to drip from his severed wrist.

The second boy, still on the ground, begged, "Put him down! Please!" Lunette's voice was low and unforgiving as she stepped closer. "I warned you to leave me alone." With another quick incantation, "Remitto corpus," she gently lowered the boy to the ground. He was still upside down but no longer in immediate danger. Lunette blinked, the red glow fading from her eyes as she looked down at her bloodied hands, horror dawning on her. "I... I didn't mean to..." she stammered, backing away. The courtyard fell silent except for the whimpering of the injured boy. Hearing footsteps approaching, Lunette glanced to the side and saw Principal Weems rushing toward her. Without a second thought, she turned and ran, her heart pounding as she tried to process what she had just unleashed.
