Chapter 14
Nothing hurts more than finding yourself in the same situation after becoming better.
Skylar turned, but when she looked toward the door, nothing was there.
It felt suffocating—being forced to witness change she couldn't stop. Everything was moving too fast, spiraling far beyond her grasp.
She felt something wet—hot—slide down her left cheek.
Fresh tears.
It hurt. It truly did.
The kind of pain you couldn't stop. The kind you couldn't ignore. Because it wasn't faint.
Breathing became painful, like all the oxygen had been ripped from her lungs. Her heart thudded with aching weight.
When she turned, Emma was still shaking, eyes wide, locked on the door in raw fear.
Tears spilled one by one. And suddenly, Skylar saw herself through those eyes—through Emma.
The moment everything was stripped away from her.
When she realized the people she trusted had taken her for a joke—something to be used and tossed aside.
