Chapter 66 - Chapter 66. She Committed No Crime

Due to the inconsistency between subjective and objective factors, Nanatsuki Koshimizu was sentenced to three months of pretrial detention and three months of probation.

What is probation?

It means suspension of the sentence.

If the probation period and the prison time are the same, then you no longer have to serve time in prison.

However, during the probation period, the person in question must not reoffend. If they are caught committing a crime again, their probation will be revoked, and they will be punished for multiple offenses.

After leaving the courthouse, Keisuke Kumiko went to the detention center where Nanatsuki Koshimizu had previously been held.

Inside the detention center, Nanatsuki Koshimizu had just completed some formalities and was about to leave.

When she saw Keisuke Kumiko approaching, she greeted him with a smile.

"Attorney Keisuke Kumiko, thank you so much for defending me this time. I can leave here with my head held high."

"No need to be so polite."

Kumiko waved his hand and stared intently at her face.

"Ms. Nanatsuki, you were the one who planned this murder, weren't you?"

Nanatsuki Koshimizu blinked and smiled. "Counselor, I don't understand what you mean."

"Stop pretending." Keisuke Kumiko shook his head. "You were about to confess this to me this morning, but now you're denying it. That's very ungentlemanly of you."

"Yes, I did plan it."

Hearing Keisuke Kumiko's words, Nanatsuki Koshimizu smiled and no longer hid the truth.

She then told the whole story openly.

"In fact, before boarding the boat to the deserted island, the first time I saw Hiroo Tomo's eyes, I knew he would soon kill someone," Koshimizu Nanatsuki said calmly. "Especially the way he looked at Junya. That hesitation, nervousness, and slight excitement is something only someone on the verge of committing a crime would show."

"Oh, so you're quite perceptive."

Keisuke Kumiko nodded.

What Nanatsuki Koshimizu said might sound ridiculous, but he could understand it.

In this world, all seasoned detectives have the intuition to spot the killer. For example, in the case where Kumiko sued Conan for kicking someone and causing a concussion, Conan just looked into the true killer's eyes and was sure that he had indeed killed someone.

"So you simply took advantage of the situation."

Kumiko said.

You originally planned to kill people your way and trap everyone on the island, but you thought that if something unexpected happened and someone rescued you, you would face a criminal charge of intentional homicide, so you changed your plan at the last minute.

When attacking someone, you deliberately held back and only rendered the victim unconscious. To exonerate yourself later, you didn't use gloves or any tools, and you deliberately left your DNA and fingerprints on the murder weapon.

"You had to act first because you weren't sure whether Renzo Kotani and Hiroo Tomo would carry out their plan if you gave up yours, because you suspected that their plan might be to kill someone and frame you."

It was all planned by you. After you left, Hiroo followed you, left the table, snuck into Junya's room, and killed him with a fatal blow.

After leaving the island, you would ask me to defend you. You must have been sure that after your setup, I would defend you with minimal effort because you investigated me beforehand and believed that I would do anything to win the case.

"Am I right, Miss Nanatsuki?"

Kumiko finished speaking, staring into Nanatsuki Koshimizu's eyes.

Nanatsuki Koshimizu kept smiling.

After listening, she clapped her hands.

"You've figured it all out. You really are the famous Keisuke Kumiko. I didn't underestimate your skills."

Pause.

"So, Counselor, what will you do now? Turn me back in to the police?"

The girl licked her lips and stared at Keisuke Kumiko with her big blinking eyes. Her once-innocent face became seductive in that instant.

"Tsk, do you think I'm a lawyer like Eri Kisaki who cries for justice and would betray my client for the truth?"

Keisuke Kumiko raised an eyebrow and sneered.

You're my client, and my job is to defend you. No matter what you've done or what the truth is, it has nothing to do with me.

Nanatsuki Koshimizu stared at Kumiko's face.

"Really? Looks like I hired the right person."

She smiled as she said this.

"Besides, you didn't commit any other crime, right?"

Keisuke Kumiko smiled.

According to legal definitions, you're only guilty of attempted murder. Even if you planned it, there's no way to put you behind bars.

"Doesn't this count as a crime of omission? Watching someone in danger and not helping?" Ai interrupted him.

Keisuke Kumiko glanced at her and said, "Doraemon, looks like you need to study more law. A crime of omission is only defined when there is a duty to rescue, but that duty isn't fulfilled. What's the relationship between her and the deceased? Is he her long-lost biological father? Or her beloved husband? If there is no duty to rescue, there is no crime."

But she rendered the victim unconscious beforehand and didn't rescue him, so the true killer could murder him. Isn't this an 'omission' due to 'prior conduct'? Shouldn't she be charged with indirect intentional homicide?

"Idiot, your claim that 'only then can the dead be killed' is incorrect. Doraemon, how many times do I have to repeat this for you to understand?"

Keisuke Kumiko sighed, showing a disappointed expression.

Leaving the victim unconscious and the killer murdering him cannot be objectively linked because if the victim had remained unconscious, there would have been no immediate danger to his life. Being killed later would be a separate situation objectively, and does not constitute a prior act. Got it? We can only say she had a subjective plan, but objectively the victim's death had nothing to do with her. In an omission crime, subjective and objective factors must align. So, she can only be charged with attempted murder, understand?

"Fine."

Ai pouted at Keisuke Kumiko.

This guy has completely mastered the law.

If this guy actually commits a crime, no one could ever put him behind bars.

"You lawyers have way too much complicated knowledge."

Nanatsuki Koshimizu, who was standing there, watched the two converse and couldn't help but laugh.

As a child, I also dreamed of becoming a lawyer. But later, seeing how much there was to learn, I felt overwhelmed and eventually gave up.

"If you're not a lawyer, you also have great talent as a detective."

Keisuke Kumiko turned to look at her and said meaningfully.

Everyone was fooled by you in this whole matter. I have to admit, your methods were really cunning. Even I almost fell for it.

"Oh? And when did you figure it out?"

Nanatsuki Koshimizu showed an interested expression.

"In the courtroom."

Kumiko replied.

Since your performance was so realistic, almost everyone was moved. If a woman cries that easily, there must be something wrong. So, at that moment, I knew you had planned everything.
