Chapter 81 - Chapter 81: One Day in the Future, If You Need to Find a Lawyer

Not long after, the sincere voice of the doctor was heard from the inner room of the clinic.

"I'm ready here, you can come in."

Keisuke Kumiko pursed his lips at Ai.

In the next moment, Dr. Asai conducted a full-body examination on Ai.

Including surgery: skin, arteries, kidneys, etc.

Internal medicine: respiratory rate, heart rate, nerve reflexes, spleen, etc.

Blood tests, chest X-rays, electrocardiograms, and more were also performed.

Although the clinic was small, it had all the necessary equipment.

Since it was the only medical clinic on Moon Shadow Island, Dr. Asai's equipment was surprisingly complete.

During the check-up, Keisuke Kumiko casually chatted with him about the island's customs and people, gathering relevant information.

For example, the island's scenic spots, its famous assets and industries, and notable figures.

At first, Dr. Asai spoke and laughed.

However, when he mentioned certain individuals, his expression changed slightly.

"The current village chief, Kuroiwa Tatsuji, is a very tyrannical man," Dr. Asai said angrily.

After being elected village chief, he acted arbitrarily and allowed a foreign chemical company to open a factory here without the villagers' consent. The factory discharged wastewater day and night, polluting the villagers' land and ponds.

In addition to the current village chief, he mentioned two other names:

Hideo Kawashima and Ken Nishimoto, both wealthy figures in the area.

His eyes were filled with hatred, and Keisuke Kumiko noticed that every time he mentioned these names, his favorability rating slightly decreased.

Keisuke Kumiko nodded to himself. It was exactly the same as in the original book. It seemed that these were the people he wanted to kill.

The Moonlight Sonata Murder Case was a very famous case in the original Detective Conan novel, and even he was familiar with it.

"Mr. Kumiko, your sister is perfectly healthy."

After the examination, the sincere doctor smiled and patted Ai's head.

Keisuke Kumiko took the medical examination form and looked it over from top to bottom.

"You see, I told you I was fine, right?" Ai said from the side.

Keisuke Kumiko put away the medical report and nodded. "For safety, you should still get a medical check-up from time to time in the future."

"Yeah, fine."

Ai didn't argue. After all, when it comes to medicine, ordinary people have no say. She could only ensure that there were no side effects like physical deterioration, but she couldn't guarantee whether there would be additional negative effects.

When she was still with Conan, at least she had someone to observe.

Now that she had left Conan, she could only observe herself.

Before leaving, Keisuke Kumiko gave Dr. Asai a meaningful look.

"Dr. Asai, as you can see, I'm a lawyer. My main goal is to help my clients win their cases. I will do my best.

If you ever need a lawyer, feel free to contact the Kumiko Law Office.

My door will always be open for you.

Lastly, remember—life is precious.

Don't throw it away so easily."

Asai Makoto frowned slightly and stared at Kumiko's face, observing the meaningful smile on his lips.

For some reason, he had a strange feeling.

This person's eyes seemed to see right through people's hearts.

Suppressing the odd sensation in his chest, Asai Makoto smiled. "Well, I'll consider it if that day ever comes."

After taking one last look at the doctor in front of him, Kumiko left the clinic with Ai.

"Does what you just said mean the doctor is going to kill someone soon? Are you saying you'll be his lawyer later?"

On the way back to the hotel, Ai asked this.

"I'm curious—how do you judge whether someone will kill another person?"

Ai was a smart girl, always sharp when needed.

She had had this question on her mind since the Yueshui case.

"Ah, about that, I have this ability. Just by looking at someone, I can tell if they're going to kill someone," Keisuke Kumiko said casually.

Ai rolled her eyes. "I don't believe you."

But she couldn't come up with a reasonable explanation.

Besides, what Kumiko said wasn't too outrageous. Strictly speaking, the ability he described was actually similar to that of detectives.

They stayed on the island for a day, enjoying the local scenery.

But Kumiko and Ai didn't stay long. They soon took a ferry back to Tokyo.

The following days were relatively peaceful.

As Keisuke Kumiko had said before, no matter what timeline they were in, life and fate remained the same as always—nothing had changed.

People went to work when they needed to and rested when they had to.

Human life was insignificant and hardly worth mentioning in the face of the so-called great flood of time.

The only difference was—

"If you don't install an air conditioner, I'm running away from home!"

"There's an electric fan in the office. Isn't that enough?"

"Would you believe me if I blew the fan directly in your face?"

"Don't be like that. Your true self—Doraemon—once said a famous quote: 'People always have to sweat a little.'"

"Shut up!"

Faced with Ai's strong demand—which was actually a threat—Kumiko reluctantly spent a huge sum to install an air conditioner. Every month, he stared at the massive increase in his electricity bill, clutching the money he was about to pay while sighing.

Daily life remained as simple as ever.

During this unnecessarily long summer, Keisuke Kumiko, of course, had to keep dealing with lawsuits.

Unfortunately, there were very few high-power cases.

In other words, cases with "guaranteed wins."

Most of the time, the opposing party had surveillance videos, audio recordings, or other direct evidence.

This was also a common reality in the information age.

Moreover, high-confidence cases were hard to come by.

As previously mentioned, a three-million-yen legal fee was already among the highest in Japan, and it was rare for the amount to exceed that figure.

Keisuke Kumiko's style was "close the office for three years, then earn enough money for the next three years after reopening."

In his view, commissions below six figures were a waste of time.

One afternoon—

"Oh, I spent a few thousand more this month..."

Keisuke Kumiko sat at his desk, looking at his bank deposits on the computer and sighing.

"Stop whining, you cheapskate," Ai's voice came from the sofa.

Unlike before, this time she was lying comfortably on the couch, enjoying the cool air from the air conditioner.

"It's just a slightly higher electricity bill each month, isn't it?"

Ai was scrolling through her smartphone, rolling her eyes like a classic dead fish.

"You should be grateful I'm saving you a bunch of money. After all, I haven't gone shopping like other women, buying branded handbags and perfumes."

"What? You want to buy designer handbags?"

Kumiko nearly jumped.

"If I don't buy them now, I'll want them later when you have more money," Ai said with a devilish grin.

"Forget it!"

Keisuke Kumiko held his forehead.

He vaguely remembered that Ai, in the original work, actually had a personality that liked to spend money.

She once said that her goal was to buy a house in Tokyo, preferably a luxurious villa with a courtyard and botanical garden.

Now, it seemed unclear when that goal could be achieved.

"Your words have changed, and so has your predecessor..."

As he sighed, his phone suddenly rang.

Keisuke Kumiko pressed the answer button, and a male voice came from the other end.

"This is Tokyo Medical University Hospital. Is this Mr. Kumiko?"

"Yes, that's me. How can I help you?"

"There's a patient here named Narumi Asai who wants to see you."
