Chapter 30 - Part 29

But Sophie wasn't fazed in the slightest.

"Sorry, Amanda, but you're about to not be his wife anymore. Whether I go after him or not—it's none of your business!"

"You cheating whore! Who the hell do you think you are to lecture me?!"

"Ugh, just shut up already. Your voice is giving me a headache."

With that, Sophie hung up without hesitation. Then, as if dealing with an annoying spam call, she swiftly powered off my phone, leaving Amanda with no chance to keep ranting.

"Here, your phone." She handed it back to me, looking completely satisfied.

I couldn't help but chuckle. "You're really enjoying this, huh?"

"Of course." Sophie smirked. "You're too soft. A woman like that? Not worth your patience."

I didn't argue.

Instead, after a long pause, I simply muttered, "Thanks."

And I meant it.

Sophie and I weren't close, yet time and again, she stepped in, shielding me from the chaos in my life.

I didn't know why she did it. But whatever her reasons were, I owed her at least this much gratitude.

Sophie shook her head wordlessly, her gaze distant. There was something on her mind.

We wandered through the garden in silence, the cool night breeze weaving between us.

At some point, she murmured under her breath, almost too softly to hear, "If I'd known things would turn out this way, I should've made the first move back then."

I frowned. "What?"

"Nothing, nothing." She waved a hand dismissively and quickly changed the subject.

"So, you and that woman—did you start dating in college?"

"Yeah." I nodded, though I wasn't exactly eager to talk about my past with Amanda.

But Sophie seemed intrigued, peppering me with questions.

Then, suddenly, she stopped in front of me, her eyes glinting with something unreadable.

"Did you know," she said slowly, "we actually went to the same university?"

I blinked, caught off guard.

"Wait... seriously?"

She didn't answer, just launched into a string of anecdotes about her college days.

At first, I listened with mild interest.

But the more she talked, the more something felt... off.

"Wait a second," I interrupted, narrowing my eyes.

"You and Amanda... were in the same department?"
