Chapter 52 - Can I Go to England If I Don’t Speak English?

The curriculum for general basic courses is similar to high school courses, or in other words, for Magus, general basic courses are equivalent to high school, and only after graduating from general basic courses and entering their field of interest are they considered to have entered university.

Therefore, Naoki spent the entire day in class, only going out for a walk after class and during the day. Honestly, even though he had already graduated from high school and even came to England, where the school system is relaxed, Naoki couldn't understand why he still had to study every day like he did in middle school?

Has the study atmosphere in Japan spread to England?

"Hoam~"

That night, after returning to the apartment in Waver's car, Naoki immediately collapsed on the living room sofa.

"I'm dying... I'm really dying..."

"Huh? You're back already?"

Hearing the voice coming from the living room, Merlin poked half her head out from the kitchen across the living room and looked at the two of them: "Naoki, what's wrong with you? It seems like you finally mustered the courage to confess to your crush but got brutally rejected? Are you heartbroken?"

"In a sense, that's true."

Waver said as he took off his coat.

"He was brutally rejected by the English language."

"Huh? What do you mean?"

"The textbooks at the Clock Tower are in English, and he can't read them."

This short sentence dealt another heavy blow to Naoki, who slumped on the sofa: "I deeply regret not being able to understand English! After all, I haven't even passed the CET-4 exam. It's outrageous to ask me to read textbooks entirely written in English! What's wrong with those words? It took me a long time to look them up in the dictionary! Can't the Clock Tower use more straightforward terms when compiling textbooks!"

"Really? I think it's quite easy. And if you really want to talk about it, isn't that your own problem?"

Waver asked with a smile.

"Before you came here, didn't you forget that the everyday language here is English?"

"Uh... isn't it a common assumption that the whole world speaks Japanese?"

"So, why do you have this idea?"

'Because that's how it's played out in anime! Isn't Japanese the universal language of the world and even the universe?'

Seeing this, Merlin couldn't help but smile and said, "Then what did we do before, do you want to do it again?"

"That? Which one?"

"It's a very rigorous English training. Previously, you were trained until you wouldn't have problems in daily life. This time, I'll train you until you won't find any flaws in your English, even native English speakers."

Hearing her words, Naoki's body immediately reacted with stress. It trembled violently several times as if electrocuted, then shook his head vigorously like a rattle. "No, no, no, I appreciate Miss Mary's kindness, but please let me follow your special training – Waver! Help me learn English tonight. This is also your responsibility as a teacher!"

Naoki would never want to go through that 24-hour non-stop special training life again, because it was a life where you weren't allowed to close your eyes until you learned it! For five full days, he didn't rest for a single second!

Facing Naoki's plea for help, Waver could only sigh helplessly: "So I'm really curious, who gave you the courage to come to England without mastering English well?"

"I gave it to myself."

"Why can you answer so confidently?"

"Pah!"

Suddenly, they clapped twice, and Merlin interrupted their conversation with a smile: "Alright, alright, let's talk about English tutoring for Naoki later. Now let's have dinner first. I've already prepared it – tonight's dinner is roast meat, fish and chips, and vegetable salad, and I'll make pudding later. You must be hungry after a day of studying, so remember to eat more for dinner."

Listening to the names of the dishes announced by Merlin, Naoki unconsciously pinched his stomach – before time traveling, he was a bit chubby, and a piece of meat could be pinched on his belly. After time traveling, due to external forces and the original owner's foundation, he barely maintained a slightly slim figure. But because the three meals he consumed in the past few days were all high-calorie, he always felt his belly would relapse again.

"Hmm? Naoki, what's wrong with you? Don't you have an appetite?"

"No, no, I just feel like I've been eating too much lately, and I'm a bit worried about gaining weight."

Although British food is clearly not delicious, for Naoki, who had been living a hard life for the past year and a half, eating only twice a day, both consisting of bread and half-price bentos, the food of the past few days could be considered a feast for the eyes.

"Getting fat?"

Hearing this, Merlin suddenly wanted to laugh. She walked over and touched his chest: "This is the first time I've heard a boy care about his figure. You're really strange. But don't worry, I don't know about others, but you will never get fat, even if you eat more than ten bowls of rice in one meal."

"Huh? Why are you so sure?"

"Because that's just how that person is."

'That person?'

'Ah... that's right... it's fine.'

Thinking of this, Naoki's inner burden suddenly disappeared, and he immediately ran to the restaurant. With King Arthur nearby, couldn't he spend as much time as he wanted? !

◆━⊰✧⊱━◆

Half an hour later.

"Hmm~ I'm full~ Burp~"

While patting his slightly bulging belly, Naoki burped while sitting at the dining table.

Seeing him like this, Waver, who was drinking tea, couldn't help but ask, "Are you sure your stomach is okay? Be careful not to run to the toilet at night."

"No, no, I'm confident in my digestive abilities. Are you sure I won't feel hungry again in an hour?"

"Are you a pig?"

Sighing, Waver put down his cup of water and said, "I'll go upstairs first. I have class tomorrow and I need to prepare. I've already told you that I'll teach you the basics of Magecraft tomorrow. You'd better prepare yourself first – there will be homework after class."

"Huh? Homework?"

Naoki was stunned.

"Wait a minute, Waver, when did you develop the bad habit of assigning homework? It's the worst product in the history of educational development."

"Stop talking nonsense. Let me explain first that the homework to be done is basic Magecraft and writing a simple essay. There's no word count requirement."

"Have you finished your assignment?!"

Seeing Waver run to the second floor, Naoki's face suddenly changed: "The basic use of spirit summoning techniques... how do you do it specifically? I don't even know how to perform a single Magecraft trick."

"The basics of necromancy?"

Across from Naoki, Merlin thought for a moment and said, "Then, I can teach you."

"Huh? Really?"

"I'm a Magus with a Grand Master title. Although I'm not an expert, I have no problem with basic things." Merlin puffed out her chest confidently. "But for summoning techniques, if you want to use them at your level, you'd better find a better spiritual place. This way, you can increase your success rate."

"Where can we find a better spiritual place?"

"Hmm…"

After tapping her lips and thinking for a moment, Merlin clapped her hands and said, "How about going to Glastonbury?"
