Chapter 5 - Until Then

FLASHBACK

"Don't you ever worry that your life's too perfect?"

One of Shen Han's classmates asked him that back in school and he only responded with a half-hearted smile.

His lips gave no reply that day, and after graduation, he never saw that classmate again. But in his heart, he screamed and admitted it—yes, he was afraid. Because Shen Han knew that nothing in this world—or in any world—was ever truly perfect.

Since that day, Shen Han started whispering a new question in every prayer: Would God be so cruel as to shatter the happiness he held so dearly? Could God allow even one human being to live a life this flawless?

Sometimes, Shen Han wondered what he had done to deserve the life he had. It wasn't arrogance—he knew well enough not to claim more than the truth. But it was hard not to agree with what everyone around him always said: His life was perfect.

No flaws, no cracks for people to poke fun at or tear him down.

He had everything people could dream of when they pictured happiness. And Shen Han didn't know if he should be grateful—or suspicious.

He also never knew whether their words were sincere compliments or bitter envy. But being the optimistic person he was, Shen Han always chose to believe the first.

So he never forgot to give thanks.

To God.

To his family and friends who loved him deeply.

To the comfortable life he had known since childhood.

And especially to his beloved—

The man who had promised to treasure every drop of love Shen Han offered.

The same man who would soon become his husband and begin a new chapter with him.

Shen Han smiled quietly as he thought about how soon he'd go from boyfriend to husband. Their wedding had been in preparation for months, and everything was ready. He'd be lying if he said he didn't want the new title already—but more than that, he just wanted to be done with all the exhausting planning.

Shen Han swore he'd only ever marry once. Why go through all that hassle twice? Besides, he doubted he could ever let go of the charm of his fiancé—

Jia Wen, the man he was going to marry. Shen Han never thought he'd fall in love with that name so much.

He bit his lower lip—softly, so he wouldn't draw blood.

Jia Wen was dangerous in the best ways. The calm, composed Shen Han often lost all control around him.

Just as he was about to turn around and end his wandering thoughts, he felt a pair of arms wrap around his waist from behind. He might've screamed—if he hadn't remembered that the only people in the room were him and his fiancé.

Shen Han turned in Jia Wen's arms to meet those beautiful eyes—eyes that, when they looked at him, only ever reflected love.

"Thinking about me?" Jia Wen asked with a playful smile.

Shen Han smirked. "Aren't you the one who's always thinking about me?" There was no way he'd admit the truth so easily.

Jia Wen's ego didn't need any more fuel.

"What can I do? You're selfish enough to never leave my mind—not even for a second."

Shen Han let out a light laugh. Whether he was used to it, or just found it ridiculous, he didn't know. He let Jia Wen pull him into a warm embrace.

"Just admit it—you can't wait to be my husband, right? Right? Right?" Like a child, Jia Wen never failed to make him smile.

"You're so full of yourself. I kinda like it," Shen Han whispered seductively.

He pulled back and looked at Jia Wen closely. Five years together, and still Shen Han couldn't believe they were really getting married.

"You'll have all the time in the world to admire this face once we're married." Jia Wen leaned in and kissed him softly.

They both knew that a kiss like that would never be enough.

They wanted more—but Shen Han knew this wasn't the time.

So before they lost control, he pulled away again.

He saw the disappointment clearly in Jia Wen's face.

Shen Han reached out, gently cupping his cheek. "You know we'll have all the time for that after the wedding."

"You're such a naughty groom-to-be," Jia Wen teased, pulling him in for another kiss.

"Why can't I ever stop kissing you?" he muttered in between kisses, then proceeded to plant a trail of kisses all over Shen Han's face, making him giggle.

They pulled apart again, and Shen Han checked the time on his watch. "Aren't your friends throwing you a bachelor party tonight? You haven't left yet?"

"I don't want to go. I'd rather spend my time here—with you."

Jia Wen leaned his head on Shen Han's shoulder like a spoiled child.

Today was their last night as unmarried men. Jia Wen had a bachelor party to attend, and while Shen Han was a bit uneasy— he trusted him.

Still, he didn't let Jia Wen off the hook that easily.

"You better not do anything stupid, you hear me?" Shen Han warned, pinching his nose lightly, earning a laugh in return.

"Relax. I still want to marry you. I'll be a good boy and come home to you."

"One more thing. I know you can hold your liquor—but please, don't drink too much. I don't want my groom slurring his vows tomorrow."

"Hmm… that one I can't promise," Jia Wen said with a grin.

Shen Han punched him lightly. Let's see what he would do if Jia Wen did get drunk before their wedding.

Jia Wen took both his hands and kissed them gently. "See you at the altar, my groom."

"See you at the altar, my groom," Shen Han replied, planting a warm kiss on his cheek.

He watched Jia Wen leave the room, then lay back on his bed, staring up at the ceiling.

Tomorrow was the big day.

And all Shen Han could do now was pray with all his heart that nothing would go wrong on the happiest day of their lives.
