Chapter 10 - Work

Butchering a mana beast was a physically strenuous task—proper stretching before it was important to prevent injuries.

When Oliver joined in on the stretch, the rest of the people inside the building began to stretch.

They looked like ants moving synchronously before the carcass of the huge mana beast.

After a while, Mor stopped and spoke,

"There are three broad classifications of creatures on this planet.

First are the mana beasts. They are creatures with the ability to use mana instinctively.

Mana beast comes in all shapes and sizes and can be extremely dangerous. Along with absurd physical strength, they also have weird abilities like us superhumans.

This land where the military camp is situated was the territory of an A-ranked mana beast. We defeated it and took over this land to create the military base.

Today, we are going to learn how to butcher a mana beast.

But before that, let me tell you about the other two types of creatures…"

Mr Mor kept on speaking without stopping.

Initially, he talked about mana beasts and why they are dangerous. Then he talked about methods the military and superhumans use to hunt them.

In the middle, he shifted to talking about monsters.

If you think of Mana Beast as a balanced creature that has both intelligence and strength, monsters were skewed towards more physical strength than intelligence.

The simpler way to explain it would be that monsters were creatures of pure instinct. Mana beasts that lose their mind when their bodies evolve faster than their mind could keep up would become monsters that terrorise a region.

Along with the mana beast, the mana beast processing plant would also sometimes deal with monster carcasses.

Although most monsters are inedible, they have high research value. So they also had to learn how to deal with monster carcasses.

The last kind of creature Mr Mor spoke of was the specters.

Specters are the inverse of Monsters. Instead of them losing their minds, they are creatures without bodies.

Simply put, they were intelligent ghosts made up of pure mana.

Specters are rare and difficult to find. But sometimes, when they are dealing with the corpse of mana beasts, they would occasionally see spectres of the dead beast.

Mr Mor talked about them to prepare his students and not scare them if they see one.

Once the basic explanation was completed, Mor walked to a corner of the large building to pick up the tools.

Meanwhile, Oliver looked at this with a smile. Although Mor explained about the mana beasts, monsters and specters, there was one type of creature he said nothing about.

The abominations.

These types of creatures were known as the antithesis of life itself. A creature of pure chaos and destruction.

The abominations were creatures that lost control over both their mind and body. They can barely be called living organisms. They have no purpose or goals, so they would kill and eat everything while growing in strength.

In a way, they were more dangerous than all other creatures on this planet.

But there was little to worry about them.

Abominations are the rarest creatures on second earth, and they are never born unless something terrible happens to the entire ecosystem of the planet.

Most people don't know about them. So, Mor not talking about them was not out of his expectations.

"Butchering mana beasts is a good way to learn the anatomy of the beasts. It would be helpful in any position you serve here. Be it a hunter or a military personal, you all need to learn it properly." Mr Mor swung the large knife he picked up while speaking.

"I will show how it's done. Everyone follows me."

Mor brought them towards the large carcass.

The mana beast was placed on a large, elevated platform.

"This silver-tailed cow was caught from the plain east of the camp. They are herbivores that graze during the day."

"As you can see, they are called silver-tailed cows because of the long silvery tail behind it."

The beast was five meters tall and eight meters long. The tail, however, was more than ten meters long, with the base being the thickest, about a foot in girth. The tail was abnormally large for a creature of that size.

"This one is a little on the larger side. It's a D rank beast with a 1000 unit of max mana. The long whip-like tail acts as a defensive and offensive tool."

"This silver-tailed cow was hunted by targeting a high-powered mana pulse on its forehead. Looks like the work of a professional. That's why there is no damage to the body." Mor said in admiration.

He seemed to have turned into a fan of the hunter.

"Our job here is to butcher and take all the valuable parts of the beast." He paused. Mor turned to look at all the people before him.

Like Oliver, the rest were all recruits that needed training. But unlike him, they were not wearing all the safety equipment.

These people were professionals with the ability to cover their bodies with mana. He judged they were at least rank D or above.

Soon, the eyes of Mr Mor linked with his own.

"You, Funny Liver. What do you think is the most valuable part of this beast?" Mor asked.

Oliver didn't even wait even for a second, he knew the guy was talking to him.

"The tail." He promptly replied.

Mor was impressed, not because of his answer, but due to his composure.

"That's right. The tail bone and materials from it are used by mech manufacturers. So, you can guess the value." Mor nodded to Oliver as he spoke.

"Even now, after all science and innovation, humans have yet to find a better alternative to materials from mana beasts. So, even the most advanced weapon systems use them. Your first job while working here is to find and extract the most valuable part."

"In this case. The tail."

Mor flicked his arm.

*Swish*

The knife whistled through the air and moved through the base of the tail.

*Thuck*

The cut was clean.

No blood spurted as it fell to the floor.

"You will be able to do the same once you enhance the weapon in your hand with mana."

Once a mana beast dies, their body loses the mana and strength it once had. For example, the tail that Mor cut down with a swing would have been capable of damaging steel. But now, it looked weak in comparison to the alloy blade of his.

"Today, this carcass was brought here for training purposes. All of you come forward and try to replicate what I did."

Mr Mor said and stepped back while pointing to the tail he just chopped down.
