Chapter 13 - THE STAGE

The rank C hunter standing in front of the board said:

— "Hello everyone, I hope you're doing well. I'll introduce myself for the trainees."

He added:

— "I am Rakesh Ranavat, a rank C hunter of Indian origin. In addition to being an urban hunter, I am part of the national army. So, I am not limited to demon appearances in the city, but I am also involved in the war.

You are here today for your internship, but you must know that this is not a game. Every day, a demon appears in the city. We face real demons, these are not simulations. You were sitting comfortably at home while we risked our lives to protect you. That is our job, and you also want to become like us."

Igris thought to himself with disgust:

"Me, become like you? Never. I'm just here to prove that you're useless, nothing more. You're just impostors who only care about money."

Rakesh continued:

— "Today, you will go on a mission with us and face monsters alongside us. I see that two of you are already in combat gear, but..."

He looked at Igris and asked:

— "Why aren't you in combat gear? You're just wearing a t-shirt and pants? And where is your weapon?"

Igris put his hands in his pockets and coldly stared at Rakesh before responding:

— "I don't need an outfit like I'm in a fantasy world. Sorry, but I prefer to stay light. As for the weapon..."

He pulled out a modified kunai, with the rope replaced by a metal chain. Then, he reached into his second pocket and pulled out a Swiss army knife. Smirking arrogantly, he declared:

— "Boubou already has everything he needs in his hands!"

The entire room stared at him, intrigued by his words.

Feeling awkward, Igris glanced around and asked:

— "Uh... Why are you all looking at me like that? I'm not a demon, am I?"

— "Yeah, but you've got the same arrogance as them," said a rank D hunter present in the room.

Rakesh intervened:

— "Calm down, you must not..."

Suddenly, an alarm started ringing.

Call to all rank D hunters! A level C demon has just been reported in front of the CNTD building. He is said to be accompanied by 14 level E demons. No hunter is strong enough to neutralize them alone. Head there quickly!

Everyone immediately rushed out, not even bothering to warn Igris, Jean, and Erica. The three of them, unsure of what to do, stood frozen for a moment. Then, one of the hunters stopped and shouted at them:

— "What are you waiting for? The training has started!"

He then resumed running.

Upon reaching the hallway, all the assassins and mages jumped out the window, while the others took the stairs. Intrigued, Igris also jumped out the window to see what was happening.

As he leaped, he saw that the mages in front of him were levitating on floating objects. The assassins were jumping from rooftop to rooftop.

Igris thought, preparing to jump:

"Alright, I have the skills of an assassin and a shadow demon, and I can lift 100 kilos with my hands. I should be able to do the same."

He jumped off the building, surpassing even the neighboring structure. Landing on one of the rooftops, he dashed forward at an incredible speed.

Ahead of him, two assassins were already running toward the CNTD. One asked the other:

— "Do you think these trainees will manage to kill even one demon?"

— "At the very least, one of them needs to get there in time..."

Then, something sped past them at an astonishing velocity. Panicked, one of them asked:

— "What was that? Chief Rakesh? No... It was even faster than him!"

In reality, it was Igris, but they hadn't recognized him.

When the others exited the building, Jean placed his hand on his sword and, taking a combat stance, said to the hunters preparing to leave on foot:

— "Alright, see you there."

Lightning coursed through his body, and he took off at a speed almost equal to Igris, his form surrounded by blue electricity.

The warriors and tanks left behind were impressed by his speed. One of the healers then called out to Erica, who was still stunned by how fast Igris and Jean were moving:

— "Hey, elf! Come here, we're getting teleported!"

— "Uh... Yes!" replied Erica, quickly heading toward them.

Everyone gathered in one spot. Rakesh raised his hand and announced:

— "Get ready, we'll appear right in front of the building. Are you all set?"

The entire group shouted in unison:

— "YES!"

Adjusting his glasses, he then said:

— "Teleportation!"

A blue light surrounded them, and they were instantly teleported.

As the assassins ran, they saw yet another flash pass by them. One of them exclaimed:

— "What the hell is that speeding past us?"

Igris, still sprinting, thought:

"Wow, am I really this fast? Faster than a rank D? I never would've believed it!"

Suddenly, Jean caught up to him and, smiling, said:

— "Hey! Wanna race to the CNTD?"

Igris grinned back and replied:

— "Yes!"

They pushed themselves to their limits, accelerating at full speed.

When they arrived in front of the building, cars were on fire, and lifeless bodies were scattered on the ground.

Several demons were patrolling, scanning the surroundings for any remaining survivors.
