"This is bad... another bad—what's worse is that it's a fully evolved one! "Lawlet's mind was spiraling, his thoughts drowning in panic.
Yulli stood beside him, shaking like a leaf caught in a storm, his breath shallow, his eyes wide with horror.
The beast prowled forward, slow and deliberate, savoring the moment. It knew they were helpless. It could smell their fear. It moved with a cruel, almost playful grace, like a cat teasing a cornered mouse.
"Damn it, I've already exhausted too much mana… and Yulli's too scared to even move" Lawlet clenched his fists, his legs trembling beneath him. He had always been so confident during class, always prided himself on his quick thinking and sharp aim. But right now?
Right now, he couldn't move.
His body was betraying him, his instincts screaming for him to run, to escape.
"I was so damn sure of myself before… but what the hell is this feeling?" His breathing hitched, his heart pounding against his ribs. This isn't how it was supposed to be.
I don't want to die.
His hands shook uncontrollably. His fingers barely managed to curl around the grip of his firearm before a chilling realization struck him like ice down his spine.
I'm terrified.
For the first time in his life, Lawlet was staring death in the face, and he had nothing. No plan. No tricks. No backup.
The beast drew closer, its muscles coiling, its blackened fangs glistening in the dim light.
I need to move! I need to—
But his body refused.
His lungs squeezed tight as the creature lunged. This is it. This is—
A deafening BOOM split the air.
The ground shook violently as something massive came crashing down, sending a shockwave of dust and rubble in every direction.
Lawlet flinched, expecting claws and teeth, but instead, the beast snarled and recoiled, barely dodging the impact of what had just landed between them.
A deep crack ran through the stone pavement. Dust swirled in thick, choking waves.
And then—
A voice.
"Oit, you nerds, getting scared of a puppy?"
Lawlet's eyes widened as the dust cleared, revealing a towering figure standing at the center of the impact.
Sword buried in the ground, cloak billowing slightly from the force of his entrance, was Bruce—grinning like this was just another casual sparring session.
"Bruce?!" Lawlet sputtered, still reeling from the shock.
Bruce wrenched his massive blade from the cracked ground, resting it lazily on his shoulder.
"What? You thought I wasn't gonna show up?" he smirked. "Man, y'all would be so dead without me."
Lawlet's knees nearly buckled from relief and sheer frustration.
"You absolute bastard—!"
Bruce just chuckled.
"Relax, I got this," he said, rolling his shoulders. "Now, let's show this ugly mutt why we're Hunters."
"Are you crazy taking that thing on your own?! That's not the same beast we fought earlier!" Remi shouted, gripping her weapon tightly as she watched Bruce charge in like a madman.
Bruce just scoffed, his usual cocky smirk stretching across his face. "They're all just the same! The only difference is this one's bigger!" He dashed forward, blade raised high, completely ignoring Remi's warnings.
"That bloody idiot!" Remi cursed under her breath.
Bruce launched the first strike, bringing his massive sword down with thunderous force. But the beast sidestepped effortlessly, the blade crashing into the ground with a loud BOOM that sent dust flying.
"Tch! Just stand still, you damn mutt!" Bruce growled, swinging again—another miss. He gritted his teeth, mana coursing through his body, strengthening his next attack. He knew he was strong, but for some reason…
His blade just wasn't connecting.
Lawlet's eyes narrowed, quickly analyzing the fight. "Bruce is too big—his speed isn't keeping up! That thing's toying with him, just like it did with us!"
Bruce kept swinging, each strike more frustrated than the last. The beast weaved through his attacks, effortlessly dodging each blow as if Bruce were nothing more than a training dummy.
Then, Bruce made a critical mistake.
He swung too hard, his blade slamming into the ground and lodging itself deep into the stone. For a split second, his stance was completely open.
Shit.
The beast lunged.
Faster than anyone could react.
Bruce's eyes widened. There was no time to block—no time to move.
Then, a blur.
A flash of steel.
A single, precise thrust.
The beast reeled back, a shallow wound bleeding across its side. It wasn't a fatal hit, but it was enough to stop its attack.
Bruce blinked.
"Huh?"
" First style : counter single thrust " he performs a thrust between them, giving space between them. Yulli stood in front of him, sword drawn, breathing heavily. His stance was shaky, but his hands were steady.
Yulli stood in front of him, sword drawn, breathing heavily. His stance was shaky, but his hands were steady.
"Yulli—what the hell was that?!" Bruce barked, yanking his sword free.
Yulli swallowed, sweat trickling down his face. "I… I don't know. My body just moved."
Lawlet, still trying to process what just happened, adjusted his glasses. "That was fast… even my eyes barely kept up. And he actually managed to deal some damage."
The beast let out a guttural growl, its piercing eyes now locked onto Yulli.
Remi didn't waste time. "Everyone—regroup! This thing's not done with us yet!"
Bruce cracked his neck, rolling his shoulders with a grin. "Alright, nerds. Let's kill this bastard."
The group regrouped, panting heavily, as the beast snarled, shaking off its injuries. Its glowing red eyes flickered with a mix of rage and amusement as if it still didn't see them as a threat.
Lawlet took a deep breath, gripping his pistol tighter. "We can't beat this thing alone... we need to work together!"
Bruce scoffed, crossing his arms. "Tch. I don't need you weaklings. I was handling it just fine on my own."
Remi shot him a glare. "You could barely hang on! If Yulli hadn't stepped in, you'd be its dinner right now!"
Bruce opened his mouth to argue… but then shut it. As much as he hated to admit it, she was right. If Yulli hadn't reacted in time, he'd be lying in a bloody heap by now.
Lawlet saw the hesitation and pressed on. "We have to work together! We might have a chance if we coordinate our attacks. Remember what the professor always said—'A Hunter isn't a lone wolf. If you want to survive, you entrust your life to your comrades.' This is it! We either fight as one or we die alone!"
His words lit a fire in them.
Bruce exhaled sharply, rolling his shoulders. "Haa… Alright then. Looks like I'm signing up for a suicide mission." He cracked his knuckles with a grin. "I'll be the vanguard[1]. I'll keep this ugly bastard busy up front."
Lawlet nodded. "Good. Yulli, can you flank it? Get in and out with quick strikes?"
Yulli, still looking a little shaken, swallowed hard but gave a firm nod. "I-I'll try my best."
Lawlet turned to Remi. "What about you? What can you do?"
Remi placed a hand on her temple. "I can use telepathy via mana transmission. I'll link our minds so we can coordinate without speaking. Plus, I'll back you all up if needed."
Lawlet smirked. "Perfect. You'll be our support, and I'll take the ranged position. Everyone clear on their roles?"
The group nodded in unison.
The beast let out a deep, guttural growl, its muscles tensing, ready to lunge.
Remi took a deep breath and reached out, touching everyone's shoulders. A pulse of mana spread through them, their minds briefly flashing with one another's thoughts as the link connected.
A chilling breeze swept through the ruined city as they stepped into formation.
Lawlet raised his pistol, his eyes glowing faintly with mana.[2]
"Let the hunt begin."[3]
