Chapter 64 - Chapter 63

The Next Day

The sky was just beginning to lighten as Team 7 gathered at the village gates. The air was crisp, and the faint chirping of birds signaled the start of a new day. After a quick briefing and some light preparations, the team set out for Nightwish Town, their first mission outside of Konoha.

The journey was mostly silent. Kakashi, as usual, was quiet, his nose buried in his ever-present book. Sasuke, brooding and introspective, kept to himself. Sakura, nervous about her first mission outside the village, fidgeted with the straps of her ninja pouch. Naruto, though smiling, seemed deep in thought. For him, this was more than just a mission—it was his first taste of freedom beyond the walls of Konoha.

The air outside the village was fresh and invigorating. The forest was alive with the sounds of small animals scurrying through the underbrush, and the sunlight filtering through the trees painted the ground in dappled patterns. Naruto felt a weight lift from his chest, a sense of liberation he hadn't realized he was missing. This is what freedom feels like, he thought.

Kakashi broke the silence, his voice calm but commanding. "This is your first mission outside the village. I won't intervene unless absolutely necessary. Your task is to gather intelligence on the bandit group, formulate a plan, and execute it. What do you think is the most important factor in this mission?"

"Timing," Naruto replied without hesitation.

Kakashi raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Go on."

"At our current pace, we'll reach Nightwish Town by nightfall. That's the ideal time to gather intelligence and execute the mission. The cover of darkness will work to our advantage. We'll need to assign roles carefully—Sasuke and I can handle the combat, while Sakura provides support. The bandits may not be strong, but if we alert them too soon, it could complicate things."

Kakashi nodded, a hint of pride in his eye. "Good analysis, Naruto. Timing and coordination are key. But there's one more thing you need to prepare for." He paused, his tone turning serious. "This will be your first time taking a life."

The weight of his words hung in the air. Sasuke's expression darkened, his fists clenching at his sides. Sakura's face paled, her hands trembling slightly. Naruto, however, remained calm, his gentle smile unwavering. For him, the idea of killing wasn't something he feared—it was a necessity, a part of the world he had already come to understand.

By midday, the team arrived near Nightwish Town. The journey had taken a toll on Sakura, whose stamina wasn't as developed as her teammates'. Naruto noticed her lagging behind and slowed his pace, offering her a reassuring smile. "We're almost there. Just a little further."

As they approached the town, Kakashi stopped them. "From here, you're on your own. I'll be observing, but I won't interfere unless absolutely necessary. Remember, this is your mission."

The team split up to gather intelligence. Naruto moved swiftly through the forest, his heightened senses allowing him to observe the town from a distance. What he saw filled him with a quiet rage. The once-peaceful town was now under the control of bandits. The fields lay barren, the villagers either subdued or killed. He watched as a group of men dragged a woman from her home, her face a mask of despair. The sight stirred something deep within him—a boiling anger that he hadn't felt in a long time.

This is what happens when people abuse their power, Naruto thought, his jaw tightening. They take away the peace and freedom of others.

After memorizing the layout of the town and the positions of the bandits, Naruto retreated to meet up with Sasuke and Sakura.

That evening, the team regrouped to share their findings. Naruto spread out a rough map of the town and began outlining their plan.

"There are about 20 bandits in total," he explained. "The leader and his second-in-command have some chakra control, but they're not at the level of a ninja. They shouldn't pose a significant threat."

He turned to Sasuke. "Sasuke, I'll leave the second-in-command to you. Can you handle it?"

Sasuke's eyes narrowed, a flicker of tension visible beneath his cold exterior. "Of course. He's nothing but a weakling."

Naruto smiled, sensing Sasuke's unease. "If you're nervous, I can take care of him."

Sasuke's cheeks flushed. "I'm not nervous! Leave him to me."

Naruto chuckled, his tone light. "Alright, then. Sasuke will handle the second-in-command. I'll take the leader. Sakura, you'll cover this area." He pointed to a section of the map. "Remember, be ruthless. Don't hesitate."

Sakura's hands trembled as she gripped her kunai. The reality of what they were about to do was sinking in. "I… I don't know if I can do this," she whispered, her voice barely audible.

Naruto placed a hand on her shoulder, his expression softening. "This is part of being a ninja, Sakura. The world we live in isn't like the textbooks. It's harsh and unforgiving. But you're stronger than you think."

Sakura looked up at him, tears welling in her eyes. "I'm scared, Naruto. I don't want to kill anyone."

Naruto's gaze was steady, his voice gentle but firm. "I understand. If you're not ready, I'll handle it. But if you want to grow, you'll have to face this eventually."

Sakura wiped her tears and nodded, her resolve hardening. "I'll do it. I don't want to hold the team back."

Naruto smiled, his hand resting on her head for a moment. "That's the Sakura I know. Strong and determined."

As the team prepared to move out, Kakashi watched from the shadows, a sense of pride swelling in his chest. Naruto's ability to lead and inspire his teammates was remarkable. Despite the darkness he had faced in his life, Naruto had become a beacon of light for those around him.
