Chapter 32 - Chapter 32: Unexpected Encounter with a Rhydon

Silas had been so focused on gathering mission materials that he forgot something important Combusken didn't have a way to deal with the spores without destroying them.

The cave was also too narrow even if he sent out Pidgeot, there wouldn't be enough space for it to spread its wings, let alone use Whirlwind to clear the spores.

Recalling Combusken to prevent it from getting poisoned, Silas quickly came up with a solution.

He commanded Combusken to use a low-power Ember behind Parasect, making sure not to harm it while forcing it to stay in place.

Then, he lowered the drone and started dismantling its fan system.

After connecting it to his exploration suit, the originally small cooling fan's power increased significantly.

Positioning the fan toward the floating spores, he watched as the airflow slowed them down, causing them to drift gently downward instead of spreading.

Parasect seemed confused. The mushroom on its back twitched slightly, as if trying to figure out why its spores weren't working as expected.

Unable to move due to Combusken's positioning, the frustrated Parasect began releasing even more poisonous spores in desperation.

Silas remained unfazed. His fan wouldn't run out of power anytime soon, but Parasect's spores weren't limitless.

Sure enough, after a while, the exhausted Parasect finally stopped.

The once-aggressive Pokémon now looked drained of energy, collapsing weakly onto the cave floor.

"Flamethrower. Finish it."

Combusken, following Silas's command, swiftly ended the battle.

Taking out a collection container, Silas carefully gathered the poisonous spores released by Parasect.

When brewed into a decoction, these spores could serve as valuable medicinal ingredients.

What were they specifically used for?

Well… the mission requester was a man in his forties.

Silas didn't think too much about it.

Half an hour passed as he painstakingly collected every last spore that had settled throughout the cave.

During this time,Combusken kept watch over the three fainted Pokémon, knocking them out again if they showed signs of waking up.

Once he was done, Silas walked over and patted Blaziken's head. "Good job."

"Cha!"

Combusken flapped its wings—er, hands? in response.

Slipping on a pair of gloves, Silas then carefully harvested the two tiny mushrooms growing on Paras's back.

After neatly placing four small mushrooms into a bowl, he took off his gloves and had Combusken burn them immediately to prevent contamination.

"The Parasect spores are enough—100 grams is more than plenty. But we still need more Paras mushrooms. Let's keep searching."

After securing his collected materials in the deepest part of his backpack, Silas and Combusken continued deeper into the cave.

The cave system was filled with countless branching tunnels.

Silas used his navigation device to track his path, ensuring he wouldn't get lost.

Of course, if things got too complicated, he could always find an opening to the sky and have Pidgeot fly him out.

But unless absolutely necessary, he preferred not to rely on that method.

After all, Mt. Moon's elevation was high enough to be visible even from Pallet Town.

Flying at such an altitude wasn't exactly safe.

As these thoughts drifted through his mind, Combusken suddenly dealt with yet another unfortunate Geodude that had gotten stepped on.

Silas noticed that the humidity was gradually decreasing and felt a bit helpless.

Inside the cave, darkness surrounded him he had no idea where he was heading.

Paras preferred damp and dark environments because those places provided the tree roots they relied on to survive.

Glancing at his navigation device, he confirmed his location the outer western side of Mt. Moon.

According to the map, there was an underground river nearby.

Using a rock formation as a reference point, Silas carefully made his way toward the underground river.

Generally, wild Pokémon would often gather in such places after all, water was essential for survival.

As he approached the river, he noticed that the air was becoming fresher.

The stalactites above frequently gathered moisture, causing droplets of water to fall from their tips.

Combusken, clearly irritated, shook its head as yet another water droplet landed on its head.

Although its body heat quickly dried the moisture, the sensation of water was still uncomfortable for a Fire-type Pokémon.

As soon as the sound of flowing water became audible, Silas sent out his drone to scout ahead.

The deep, dark cave echoed with the rushing sound of water, but aside from that, everything was eerily silent.

It seemed that no wild Pokémon were present at the river at this moment.

Cautiously, Silas stepped out of his current tunnel, sticking close to the rock wall as he advanced.

After a few steps, he turned into another cave entrance that his drone had just scanned.

Walking for a while, he soon found a clue.

Crouching down, he examined the tracks on the ground.

The imprints indicated quadrupedal movement, and there were about five sets of tracks a relatively large group of Paras.

Judging by the depth of the tracks, there didn't seem to be any evolved Parasect among them.

Not that it mattered Paras and Parasect were completely vulnerable against Fire-types.

As Bug/Grass-types, they already took four times the damage from Fire moves.

If any of them had the Dry Skin ability, the weakness would be even further amplified.

Following the tracks left by the Paras, Silas and Combusken moved forward.

Before long, they spotted the group of Paras just as expected, no Parasect was present.

Without waiting for Silas's command, Combusken instinctively launched five precise bursts of Ember.

These low-level or newly evolved Paras had no chance of surviving Combusken's attacks.

Even though Combusken had deliberately held back its power, the sheer gap in talent and type advantage ensured that the five Paras fainted instantly.

With an emotionless expression, Silas quickly harvested the small mushrooms growing on their backs.

As soon as he was done, he left without hesitation, leaving behind five unconscious Paras.

He looked exactly like a man who finishes a job and walks away.

"Fourteen collected. Three more Paras to go. No rush."

Silas calculated the most efficient way to complete his mission.

"Might as well search for Sandslash next. If I'm lucky, I'll find shed claws, and I won't even have to fight."

The small mushrooms on Paras's back were valuable nutritional supplements before they evolved.

Meanwhile, Sandslash's claws were commonly used as auxiliary materials for certain medicines.

Both Paras's mushrooms and Sandslash's claws would grow back after being harvested, making them a renewable resource.

Because of this, some trainers bred Paras, Parasect, and Sandslash to make money.

However, supply was always lower than demand, so many people still issued missions to purchase them.

Silas had no interest in raising these Pokémon himself, so the best method was to harvest materials directly from the wild.

Unlike the Paras line, which thrived in damp, dark places, Sandslash preferred dry environments.

Its pre-evolved form, Sandshrew, was even afraid of water, so they typically avoided rivers altogether.

Silas turned around and began walking away from the water, heading toward a drier part of the cave.

He randomly chose a tunnel and stepped inside.

Five minutes later…

Silas and Combusken came sprinting out in a panic.

"Why the hell is there a Rhydon here?!"

Silas shouted in disbelief as he ran for his life.

"How is such a high-level Pokémon living in the outer layers of Mt. Moon?! That makes no sense!"

He ranted furiously, but his legs didn't slow down one bit.

Combusken followed closely behind, using its powerful limbs to break the tunnel entrance, causing rocks to collapse and block the path.

Once it was done,Combusken quickly caught up with Silas, leaving only the muffled roars of an enraged Rhydon echoing from behind the blocked tunnel.
