Chapter 36 - Chapter Thirty Six – Looking Back

Moonlight Crumbs had changed.

Not just in the way the bakery had grown—not just in the flow of customers, the addition of a café menu, or the way it had carved itself into the heart of the neighborhood.

But in the way the people inside it had changed, too.

The days were longer now. The work heavier. The once-quiet shop had turned into something alive, something that demanded more than just survival. And yet, somehow, it was still standing.

The sun had long set, and the last of the customers had left, leaving only the scent of baked goods lingering in the air. The soft hum of the espresso machine, the faint clatter of dishes being stacked away—it was all part of a rhythm, a heartbeat that had grown stronger with time.

Elias moved through the space as he always did, but something was different.

His hands still kneaded dough with precision. His feet still knew every step from counter to oven, every routine movement embedded in his bones. But in the quiet moments, when the rush had passed and he had time to think—that was when the weight settled in.

Moonlight Crumbs had been his parents' dream.

A place of warmth, of comfort. A place where people could find something to hold onto, even for a moment.

For two years, Elias had carried that dream as a duty.

He had never let himself ask whether it was what he wanted. Whether, deep down, he had simply been keeping it alive because it was the only thing he had left of them.

But the bakery wasn't the same as before.

It was growing. It was changing.

And he was starting to realize… maybe he was, too.

Across the street, Mira's café shift had ended.

She had taken the job for the money, for stability—two things she had spent years avoiding. But the longer she worked there, the more she found herself settling into the role.

It wasn't like freelancing.

It wasn't chaotic, unpredictable, or draining her dry.

It was… steady.

She still didn't know if she loved it.

But she didn't hate it.

And for now, that was enough.

She stepped out onto the quiet street, stuffing her hands into her jacket pockets, eyes flicking toward Moonlight Crumbs.

Lights still on. Elias still inside.

Mira smirked to herself. Typical.

She could go inside, tease him about overworking, maybe steal a leftover cookie. But something told her tonight wasn't the night for that.

So instead, she walked.

One block, then another.

The future wasn't something Mira thought about often.

But maybe, just maybe, it was time to start.

Hikari had learned to move quickly in the bakery.

The trays, the orders, the flow of customers—it was almost second nature now.

But even as her hands worked, her mind wandered.

This wasn't the first job she had ever taken. But it was the first time she had stayed somewhere long enough to feel like she belonged.

A month ago, she would have never believed she could leave home.

Now, the thought of going back felt impossible.

Hikari didn't regret leaving.

But some nights, she still wondered if she had done the right thing.

Her mother hadn't tried to reach out since that day at the bakery.

No calls. No messages.

A part of her was relieved.

A part of her felt… hollow.

She had spent so long trying to be what her mother needed.

Now, she was trying to figure out who she was without that.

The bakery gave her something to focus on.

Something that wasn't just survival.

A reason to keep moving forward.

Maybe that was enough.

For now.

Elias closed the bakery late, flipping the sign to CLOSED with a quiet exhale.

He lingered for a moment, staring at the space around him.

This place was different now.

Not just because of the menu, or the customers, or the way the café had taken off.

But because of the people in it.

Mira, who had forced him to stop being invisible.Hikari, who had made the bakery her own safe place.Kobayashi, who had been watching over them all in his own quiet way.

For so long, Elias had been the only one carrying this place.

Now… he wasn't alone.

He still didn't know if this was what he wanted forever.

He still didn't have all the answers.

But maybe that was okay.

Maybe, for the first time in a long time, he didn't have to know everything.

Because Moonlight Crumbs was still here.

And so was he.

The first chapter of this story had ended.

But there were still more to come.
