Chapter 8 - Chapter 4.2: The Making Friends Club

As I settled into my chair at the long, polished wooden table of our newly formed club, I glanced around the room, absorbing the eclectic mix of personalities that filled the cozy space. Directly across from me, Airya radiated an infectious energy, illuminating her features as she animatedly engaged in conversation with Mai, who sat perched beside her, her body language a blend of excitement and apprehension, reminiscent of a nervous fish flopping out of water.

To the right of Airya, an enigmatic blonde guy captured my attention. He possessed an almost magnetic allure that was difficult to ignore. Dressed sharply in a dark blue tie that marked him as a third-year student, he exuded a effortless charm that seemed to elevate the atmosphere around him.

His hair was cut short and meticulously styled, framing his strikingly sharp jawline and high cheekbones. But it was his piercing emerald green eyes that truly captivated — they sparkled with a cool calm aura.

When our gazes locked, he flashed me a dazzling smile that felt blinding in its brilliance; it was as if I were looking at the male counterpart of Airya, both exuding an irresistible charm that made my eyes feel like they were incinerating in the sun. Overwhelmed, I instinctively glanced away, trying to regain my composure amidst the vibrant ensemble of characters surrounding me.

My eye then caught an unexpected sight — Kei. She sat comfortably by the window, her posture relaxed yet composed, one leg casually draped over the other as her intense gaze focused on the glowing screen of her Holograph 2.0 device. She seemed absorbed in another world, the light from the device dancing across her face.

A cheerful clap echoed through the room, breaking my contemplation and redirecting my attention to Airya. Her enthusiasm was palpable as she leaned forward, gripping the edges of the table. "As the president of the Making Friends Club." She announced with infectious glee, "I think we should kick things off with introductions!" Her sparkling eyes danced around the room, coaxing everyone into focus.

With a flourish that felt typical of her theatrical nature, she placed her hand over her heart, declaring, "I'll go first! My name is Airya Kusa, and I have a penchant for flamboyant clothes and a deep love for acting!" Her introduction completed, she turned to lean toward Mai, who seemed to shrink even further into her seat, her cheeks flushed a rosy hue.

"Come on, Mai! Your turn!" Airya urged, her warm smile an undeniable encouragement for the timid girl beside her.

Mai opened her mouth, and after a moment's hesitation, she stammered out, "My name is Mai. Music is a significant aspect of my life, and I really enjoy reading thrillers." Her voice, soft yet gaining strength, seemed to embolden her as she glanced at the charming blonde, silently inviting him to carry on.

With a nod of his head, Tatsu Kiryo stood up, his hands modestly resting over his heart in a gesture that seemed both warm and inviting. His glowing smile captivated everyone in the room, particularly the girls, though Kei maintained her usual air of indifference, her expression stoic.

"It's lovely to meet all of you." He began, his keen gaze sweeping across the group with enthusiasm. "My name is Tatsu Kiryo. I'm passionate about sports, and to be honest, I wasn't exactly sure what to expect when I joined this club, but I can't wait to make new friends!"

As he settled back into his chair, his eyes turned towards me, silently prompting my own introduction. My heart fluttered at the thought of speaking in front of such vibrant personalities.

Do I stand up, or remain seated?

I chose the latter, an anxious tick prompting me to scratch my cheek with my right forefinger as I tried to form my words.

"Um, I'm Asahi Irogami." I finally stammered, my voice wavering slightly. "I'm still trying to figure out what I really like, but I want to dive into as many new experiences as I can, starting with making friends." A glance toward Kei revealed that her attention had shifted to me, and abruptly, everyone else's eyes followed suit.

"Kei." She stated, her tone flat and devoid of warmth. Airya shot her an encouraging glance, urging her to elaborate, and with a resigned sigh, Kei reluctantly added, "I like looking at stars."

My head jerked up in surprise at her unexpected confession, a memory flooding back to a conversation we had shared about how the stars represent lost loved ones, shining down upon us.

So, she enjoys stargazing — that was a revelation. This was the first significant insight I had gained about Kei after living under the same roof for months. She had always been reserved, her thoughts shielded, and our interactions mostly limited to academic tutoring.

Feeling exhilarated by this newfound understanding, I smiled at her. "Like stargazing?" Tatsu asked, curiosity lighting up his expression as he leaned in closer. Kei simply nodded, her muted hum conveying more than words could express. Tatsu's bright demeanor dimmed slightly, but the sparkle in his eyes remained ever-present.

Airya clapped her hands together again, her excitement palpable. "Now that we're a bit more familiar with one another, let's brainstorm some activities we can do together as a club!"

The thought struck me like a bolt of lightning — the prospect of engaging in group activities hadn't even crossed my mind before.

What kind of adventures lay ahead for us?

"How about some karaoke or going trip to an arcade?" Tatsu proposes, his voice bubbling with enthusiasm. The suggestion jolts me upright in my seat, my palms hitting the table with an echoing clap of sheer excitement.

The sudden burst of energy catches everyone off balance, but my unrestrained joy has my head bobbing up and down like an eager puppy's tail. "I've never done karaoke or visited an arcade before!" I exclaim, my eyes sparkling with anticipation.

A chorus of exchanged glances follows, heads nodding in mutual agreement, although Kei's hesitant nod carries an undertone of reluctance.

"Sounds good to me! Let's write those ideas down,." Airya chimes in, rising from her seat with an air of purpose. She strides confidently to the whiteboard at the front of the room, the delicate ring adorning her finger catching the fluorescent light as it gleams. With a flourish, she traces her finger through the air as if pretending to wield a magic wand, causing words to materialize on the board. The sight draws a gasp of amazement from me, and the room pulses with an electrifying energy.

The transformation fills me with a sense of pure wonderment. I notice Kei watching me, her lips twitching in an almost-smile at my unrestrained enthusiasm.

"Alright, so we have karaoke and arcade—are there any other suggestions for bonding activities?" Airya prompts, her eagerness infectious. We look around at each other, the room buzzing with possibilities.

My mind is a blank canvas; I have little experience hanging out with anyone beyond my parents before I got sick.

"Um." A timid voice breaks the momentary silence, drawing our attention to a corner of the room. "What about the cinema or an aquarium?" Mai proposes shyly, her hands instinctively rising to shield her face as she speaks. "N-nevermind, those ideas are awful." Her cheeks flush a light shade of pink.

"I think those ideas are wonderful too! I've always been curious about what modern movies look like!" I blurt out, forgetting to filter my words.

Mai slowly lowers her hands, her eyes narrowing in confusion. Tatsu, bewildered, shoots me a questioning glance, "Have you never seen a movie before, Asahi?"

"Uh..." The reality of my careless statement sinks in too late.

"He's been in and out of the hospital since he was young, so he's never had the chance." Kei interjects, stepping in to rescue me from my slip-up. Her voice is steady, but I can sense the tension swirling in the room.

Yet her well-intentioned detail only complicates things further.

"You and Asahi know each other?" Tatsu asks, a look of surprise crinkling his brow, his voice infused with curiosity. The revelation seems to throw Kei into a subtle panic, as though she hadn't meant to unveil that information.

Exchanging glances filled with intrigue, Mai and Tatsu lean closer, while Airya's eyes glint with mischief, clearly having no intention of letting this newfound secret slip away easily.

Now I find myself in a tight spot, and the question hangs in the air: how do we navigate out of this awkward situation?

Kei and I find ourselves locked in a silent duel, our eyes unwaveringly fixed on each other in a moment thick with unspoken words. The air around us crackles with tension, each of us silently willing the other to say something first. Just as the standoff reaches its peak, Airya's voice pierces through the silence like a sudden burst of laughter, shattering the moment.

"Stop staring at each other, you lovebirds!" She exclaims, a playful smirk dancing across her lips as she leans back in her chair, clearly enjoying the scene. Heat floods my cheeks as I swiftly divert my gaze to the tabletop, embarrassed to have been caught in such an intimate stare-down. Meanwhile, Kei shoots a fiery glare in Airya's direction, her cheeks tinged with a hint of pink, a clear sign of fluster.

"It's not like that! He's just a family friend, that's all!" Kei hastily interjects, her voice slightly raised as she tries to clear up the misinterpretation hanging like a cloud above us. The awkward silence that follows is almost palpable, the group feeling the weight of the unspoken thoughts swirling in the air.

In an effort to break the tension, Airya clears her throat with a theatrical flourish, shifting into a more commanding presence. "Well then, since we're all clear on that, let's move on to some exciting plans we have. Are you all free after school tomorrow?"

As she scans the room with eager anticipation, her bright, expressive eyes sparkle with enthusiasm, prompting us to nod in unison. A contagious smile spreads across Airya's face as she places her hands on the desk with a sense of purpose. "Fantastic! Tomorrow, we hit the arcade!" Her words hang in the air, filled with promise and adventure, setting off a ripple of excitement among us as we look forward to the laughter and fun that awaits.
