My head snaps to the back, watching his face in excitement with the news. At this point, I am not even sure if I am just curious about the truth or I genuinely don't want to be involved in their strife.
"Come with me." He stretched his hands for me to take.
Blindly and trustingly, I take his hands and let him lead me to heaven knows where.
He takes me to a river side, asking me to sit on a rock. Without hesitation, I take my seat on the rock, mesmerized as I watch the flow of the clean river.
"I am the first born of my father. I am the rightful heir to the throne of Alpha King." He announces, his look far and guarded.
He looks close to tears and something tells me that he is having an internal struggle telling me what happened.
The fact that whatever happened to him was still hurting him and fresh in his memory is clear as day. He looked like he would soon have a mental breakdown but was holding himself back so that he wouldn't look weak in front of me.
"What happened after? How did you turn rogue?" I asked.
I am tempted to reach out to him and give him a hug or a soothing touch but I am not sure it would be a good idea. It might end up repulsing him.
I don't want anything that would make him stop speaking, especially since he is trying to put up a bold front. I don't think he would appreciate any pity party from me.
"Asher happened," He answered after a while, letting out a bitter laugh. "Asher decided that he must become an Alpha. He didn't care about the rules or the system of werewolves. He wanted something and he made sure he did something to secure what he wanted. Would you guess he did, Nadia?"
I couldn't come up with anything. I couldn't even think of the possibility of anything happening so I settled for shaking my head.
He begins to laugh but I can tell he was hiding his pain again.
"Asher did the undoable. An abomination to the werewolf world." He continues laughing, picking up a rock and throwing it into the river.
The suspense is killing me, and I am not sure how long I would continue being patient before I snapped and demanded the truth.
It is as if he is trying to brace himself up to relive what happened that day. He is postponing telling me until he is sure he won't break down.
"What did he do, Max," I whispered as softly and slowly as my curiosity would let me.
He is silent for a few minutes, simply watching the wind carry the water and drop it back down with a splash. He throws rock into the river, humming songs to himself as he did so.
When he finally reveals what Asher did, I almost fall off the rock. I'm shocked, one question going through my head alone— how was I mated to a monster like Asher Black?
"He killed the Alpha. He killed our father then went ahead and banished me and my mother. Asher is a power hungry bastard who would do anything to get what he wants. That time, the fact that he had anger issues was when he used as a leverage on me. I didn't want to hurt him, nor did my father want that too. When he attacked us, we refused to defend ourselves in a way that would hurt him. We avoided hurting him, trying to make sure nothing happens to him. He took the advantage to hurt and almost kill me. At first, he didn't kill me father but the rules are that for a new Alpha to take over, the old one must be dead. He didn't think twice before killing our old man. He kicked my mother and me out, only promising to let me back in when I find my mate which we both know is impossible. Unfortunately, my mother got attacked on the first night we sent as rogues and I had to live alone."
Sobs wreck through his body once he is done with his narration. He looks broken, tatted. He looks so dead inside that I feel the sudden urge to protect him from any harm that would come his way.
If I could turn back the hands of the clock, I would be willing to go back in time and save him.
Pulling Max into my arms, I hug him tightly, rubbing soothing circles on his back. I am going to help him take his position back.
Asher, that fucking bastard.
How can someone be that cruel? In my years of living as a rogue, and the experiences I have with my uncle, I knew that people can be really evil but Asher...Asher is on another level of wickedness. He is the devil himself.
It still baffled me how the moon goddess mated me with someone like his. It must have been a mistake.
Just then, our moment is interrupted when Asher walks over to the river, his eyes narrowing when he sees us and takes our position.
"What are you both doing here? Get out of my pack. She isn't your mate, Max. Stop being delusional. Also, I want you two out of my pack before the end of today." Asher hissed.
The urge to protect Max overcomes me with great force and at his weak moment, I knew I had to stand for him. "We are not going anywhere. Maxwell has every right to be in this pack. You rejected me and I moved on to the next available option. He is my mate if I say he is."
If I had any doubts about Asher's wickedness, he confirms it himself with his next words. "I knew you were a useless rogue who got kicked out of her pack for doing evil…like every other rogue but it sure as hell didn't cross my mind that you are a whore too. You look so innocent but the first thing you did was to spread your legs to the next man that came your way. It wouldn't have been that bad if the person you decided to whore around with isn't my brother but you just had to dream big, didn't you? Tell me, what did he promise you? A new home? The Luna position of a Pack no one wants him in? So because I rejected you, you joined forces with my brother to dethrone me?"
