Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 Finding each other

Author: Nikki

I'd always felt like something was missing, like a part of me was out there somewhere. But I never expected to find it in the form of a twin sister. Emily appeared out of nowhere, her eyes identical to mine, and her smile a mirror image of my own.

I was shocked, to say the least. As I stared at Emily, I felt like I was looking at a reflection of myself. It was unnerving, but at the same time, I couldn't help but feel a sense of curiosity. Who was this person, and why did she look so much like me?

Emily seemed to sense my unease and smiled reassuringly. "I know this is a lot to take in," she said. "But I promise I'm not here to hurt you. I just want to get to know you." Her words were sincere, but I couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to her story.

Emily tried to start a conversation, but I brushed her off, saying, "I have to study." She replied, "Now you're giving me the cold shoulder?" Her warm blue eyes, identical to mine, instantly turned icy blue for a split second.

I noticed the fleeting change and felt a shiver run down my spine. "That can wait," I said, my curiosity getting the better of me. "What do you want to talk about?" Emily's smile faltered, and her expression turned serious.

"How was mom"she asked, her voice tinged with a mix of sadness and longing. I hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. Emily's eyes seemed to bore into mine, as if searching for something.

I took a deep breath and began to tell her about Mom's passing, about the pain and the grief that still lingered. Emily listened intently, her expression unreadable. When I finished, she nodded slowly, her eyes never leaving mine.

"I'm sorry," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I wish I could have met her." I smiled, remembering Mom's kindness. "Indeed, she had a big heart," I said. But Emily's expression turned somber, her eyes intense as she asked, "What were her last words?"

The question caught me off guard, and I felt a lump form in my throat. "I...I wasn't with her," I stammered, the memories of that painful day resurfacing. "I was at the academy." Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes, and I felt a wave of grief wash over me. But to my surprise, Emily's expression softened, and she opened her arms, enveloping me in a warm hug.

As I settled into bed, I took a moment to reflect on the day's events. I pulled out my diary and began to write, recounting every detail, from the surprise encounter with Emily to our heart-to-heart conversation. After studying, I took a refreshing shower, feeling the stress of the day melt away. As I stepped out of the bathroom, I realized I had nothing to change into. I wrapped myself in a towel and called out to Emily, who arrived promptly with her characteristic quiet footsteps.

She handed me a soft, white nightgown, and I felt a flush rise to my cheeks as I tried to cover myself with the towel. "I hope this is to your taste," Emily said, her eyes sparkling with amusement. The towel slipped, and I hastily tried to adjust it, but Emily just chuckled. "Don't worry, I've seen everything," she said with a shrug.

"Practicality over modesty, remember?" As I drifted off to sleep, I felt a gentle tug on my earphones, and they were carefully removed. I opened my eyes to find Emily smiling softly at me. She gently tucked me in, making sure I was cozy and comfortable. "Goodnight, Alice," she whispered, before turning out the lights and leaving me to sleep.
