Chapter 3 - Blueflies [3]

They all spoke out in his head, echoing off. After they all spoke, their light died again, leaving only the original single blue light in the center of it all.

"This is so cool!" The boy yelled out as he jumped happily.

"We seek to speak with you, my liege." The single blue light echoes in Jin's head. The boy looks at the light with a smile, he holds out his finger and the blue light flutters up and lands upon his finger.

"What do you need, little buggie?" The child's voice spoke happily.

"We can speak to the Lady of the Moon. She had told us of your birth. We have been watching over you for many moons, but our time has come. A year or two from now, we will perish," the light spoke with a stern tone.

"O-Oh no! I don't want little buggie to die!" The young child said. He crouched down and leaned in, his big eyes staring down at the insect.

"There is nothing you can do about it, my liege. But we wish to spend this remaining time imparting wisdom upon you. Many of us have lived for millennia. Since the original tears fell-" the light spoke before the boy interrupted him.

"Sure. I like looking at the pretty lights. And I don't have many friends to talk with anyway, so you're all my friends now!" The cheerful boy spoke.

The light of the bluefly perched on his finger remained silent, as if speechless by the purity of the creature before him.

"Y-Yes, my liege. We can all be your friends; however, we are going to perish in a matter of years, it's best not to get too attached-" the bug tried to reason.

"Yay! I made all of the little buggies my friends! We're gonna have so much fun!" The child said as he jumped around happily. The insect on his finger buzzed off as his perch became unstable.

The lights of the cave all glowed at random, as if matching the child's joyous movement. The boy held his arms up like a bird and ran around the cave in circles, splashing in the thin layer of cave water. The boy giggled the whole way and the blueflies all chittered and lit up in response.

Over the next year, the boy often snuck out of his adoptive father's sight to go see his bluefly friends. The bugs told him all about the world and its history, disguised as children's tales.

One day, Jin spent lunch sweeping the floor and doing his chores while humming peacefully. His adoptive mother came in, carrying a basket of fruits at her hip.

She looked at Jin sweeping and smiled. She set the fruits down upon the kitchen's counter and started to wash them clean.

"What's got you so happy, Jin?" She asked in her sweet motherly voice. Jin peered up at her, she started to hum the same tune as Jin.

"O-Oh, nothing! I was just going to talk to that boy from the home by the river today. I think I can make it that far without Tiaris finding me," Jin said with a smile. His excuse slipping flawlessly of his tongue.

Without turning around, the mother giggled softly.

"You know she only loves you. It isn't that bad, Jin." Jin listened to her words but sighed.

"As my older sister, she sure doesn't seem to understand what being a frail boy means," Jin scoffed before setting the broom down and ruffling the dust out of his brown curls.

"Be safe, love." The woman turned her head slightly to look at Jin. But Jin was already hopping out the door.

Once out the door, Jin started down the path towards the stone road. He kept glancing around, hoping they hadn't noticed him yet. But from behind some nearby golden wheat, a pair of eyes watched him trudge along. A girlish giggle quietly came as the figure retreated into the fields.

Running through the fields, the bandaged knees of the girl and the broken glasses on her face set her dirty tomboy look. Her short walnut colored hair blew in the wind. The girl looked no older than Jin was with her childlike appearance and personality. She ran as fast as she could with a grin on her face. She jumped and slid down a ditch and jumped across a small puddle of mud with ease.

Landing on the other side with her hands digging into the half-dried mire to stop from falling in, she looked back at the wheat fields and at Jin as he left the path towards the road.

The girl scrambled up and continued running until she came to an old neglected house. Pushing the door open, the girl enthusiastically ran up to another two who were older than her. They were both taller and acted more mature, if only slightly.

"Tiaris! Emerald! He's out! He's out!" The girl called out cheerfully. She giggled as she wiped some snot from her nose and sniffled. She looked at it and recoiled a bit before wiping it off on her pants.

"Catch your breath first. I can't understand you like that, Lamb," the one named Tiaris said. Her voice was also young, but it was noticeably more mature.

Tiaris turned to look at the boyish girl named Lamb. Tiaris' long brown hair, a color similar to Lamb's, fell over her shoulder. Her dress was reminiscent of her mother's, a simple peasant wife dress, but hers was noticeably more roughed up with the sleeves tearing at the ends and the hem dirtied from her time in the woods.

The other one, named Emerald, stood there in her trousers and blouse. Her blonde hair sat at the perfect length when matched with her mixed facial features to look even more like a boy than Lamb did. People often confused her for one until she opened her mouth and spoke.

"Yes, I agree. Plus with your accent, I can barely understand you normally." Emerald spoke in a posh yet girly voice with a matching accent. It was a stark contrast to her almost princely appearance.

"Right, right!" Lamb said as she caught her breath. Emerald and Tiaris looked at each other then back down at Lamb who put her little hands on her hips and grinned proudly.

"Jin's done with his chores and heading towards the forest just like you said he would! I think we can follow him this time! He looks tired from all the chores!" Lamb said while looking at the two of them with a proud grin.
