Chapter 28 - CHAPTER 28

The heart is so angry that it is thrust...

Governor Yu felt overwhelmed. Weizhou City had seen too many murders, and he could barely keep up.

Outside the city, countless refugees awaited resettlement, yet the governor's mansion bustled daily like a chaotic marketplace.

Everything was in disarray. With a weary expression, Governor Yu rubbed his forehead.

"Enough. Take her away," he ordered, waving a hand for the servants to clean up the mess.

Huo was so enraged that she could hardly lift her arm. Supported by two elderly maids and Yu Pianpian, she sat down once more.

Yu Pianpian held Huo's cold hands, silently shedding tears.

Seeing her daughter's grievances, Governor Yu turned toward Yu Linlang, who remained composed. He hesitated before sighing, "You… ah. Forget it. Come with me."

Then, to the servants, he instructed, "Clean up here and comfort the madam."

Turning to Yu Pianpian, he added, "Pianpian, Sister Ji has just returned from the countryside. She is unfamiliar with the people and affairs of the mansion. Be patient with her—don't be angry."

"Father, how could I be angry with Sister Linlang?" Yu Pianpian's voice trembled. "I only hope she won't provoke me."

Huo clutched her chest in frustration. "Yu Shoudao! Your daughter was bullied by a lowly wretch, and you think you can brush it off with a few words? You expect my Pianpian to suffer this humiliation? Impossible!"

She pointed at Yu Linlang, her anger boiling over. "Look at her! Look at that attitude! This is the daughter you raised outside!"

"She incites the servants to insult her own mother and sister! She beats the maids at home! A temper like hers will bring disaster to this family sooner or later!"

Huo roared, "Bring the family discipline rod! Now!"

"Madam!" Yu Shoudao's head throbbed, his patience thinning. "I have important matters to attend to!"

"Go handle your business, then!" Huo snapped. "But leave her here—I must discipline her today!"

Yu Shoudao rubbed his temples. "Another murder happened at Changle Gambling House. The victim was unrecognizable. I came back to ask Linlang for help."

"What could she possibly do?" Huo's eyes widened. "Do you expect a mere girl to conduct an autopsy for you? Do you seriously believe she can handle such work?"

"After today's outburst at the mansion gates, she has already offended every noble in the state and the palace. And now you want her to go embarrass herself in front of Prince Mu and Lord Lu too?"

Her anger flared anew as she glared at Yu Linlang, who stood expressionless.

The sight of her indifferent face nearly made Huo faint from sheer rage.

Sure enough, this little beast was born to be a scourge!

She had only been back a few days, yet she had already turned the household upside down!

"You! Look at her! What's with that attitude?" Huo shrieked. "Are you mute? Why aren't you saying anything?!"

Yu Linlang remained still, as if watching a play unfold before her.

Huo's anger crashed uselessly against her silence, making her feel like a fool. Her frustration only grew.

Yu Linlang finally glanced at her and spoke lightly, "If I can make you this angry without saying a word, wouldn't it be worse if I actually spoke? If you die from rage, they'll say I killed my own mother. What would I gain from that?"

"Linlang!" Governor Yu's head ached. He suddenly realized—having too many women in the mansion was nothing short of a disaster.

Yu Linlang's voice remained soft but unwavering. "I warned you last time, Madam. Your frequent bouts of anger will lead to blood vessel congestion. You may faint, and even suffer incontinence."

"My advice? Control your emotions. Stay calm. Excessive rage raises blood pressure, which could cause a stroke at best and heart or kidney failure at worst. In severe cases, it could even lead to sudden death."

"Yu Linlang!!"

On her seventh day back at the mansion, Miss Yu Linlang once again made the madam faint—shocking the entire household.

At that moment, everyone agreed: the real calamity wasn't misfortune, but Miss Linlang herself.

For the first time, Governor Yu examined his daughter closely.

Seeing her biological mother collapse from mere words, she showed no guilt, no burden—only cold indifference.

Was she born heartless?

"You shouldn't contradict your mother again and again," he scolded.

"It was the madam who scolded me first," Yu Linlang replied mockingly. "I've already tolerated enough. What would happen if I didn't say a word?"

Yu Shoudao: ???

"You may have stayed silent, but you let your maids insult and beat your mother and sister. What do you want? To turn the mansion into a battlefield?" His voice grew stern. "That woman is your biological mother. No matter your resentment, you shouldn't be so defiant."

"Oh. Then I won't speak in the future."

Yu Shoudao: !!!

"That's not the point!" He sighed, exasperated. "You need to be more respectful toward her. Didn't you see her expression today? She was furious. It's not about whether you speak or not—it's about how you act." He took a deep breath. "If you must speak, at least do it gently."

"A daughter should be soft and graceful, like your sister. That way, when you marry, you'll have a good reputation. Don't be so blunt. You must learn tact."

Yu Linlang lifted her gaze, staring at him with cold, unreadable eyes.

Governor Yu assumed she would say something like, "I understand, Father," or "I feel guilty and will correct myself."

Instead, after a long silence, she simply said, "Mm."

Yu Shoudao finally understood his wife's frustration—the feeling of punching cotton, of yelling into a void.

He turned to leave, but after a few steps, he remembered his purpose and turned back.

Sighing, he said, "Mr. Lu and the others praised your skill in forensic examination. There's a case I need your help with. You'll accompany me."

Yu Linlang lifted her head slightly, gazing at the sky. She made no move to follow.

Yu Shoudao arched an eyebrow and gestured for her to come.

She remained still.

Jiu Jin stepped forward and spoke for her. "It's already late. The lady must return before dusk. I ask that the master come to fetch her tomorrow morning."

Yu Shoudao glanced up—the sun had not even set yet. It was barely late afternoon.

Jiu Jin added, "The madam has ordered the young miss to return to the mansion before sundown. It would be improper for her to go out again. May I ask the master to retrieve her at dawn instead?"

Yu Shoudao turned back to his daughter.

She nodded calmly, gave him a brief bow, and turned away.

Yu Shoudao clutched his chest, feeling his blood pressure spike.

His attendant rushed forward to steady him. "My lord!"

A case involving human life—yet she treated it with such indifference!

Yu Shoudao was furious beyond words.
