Cherreads

Chapter 25 - A DARKNESS LOOMS

Mia's hands mind still reeling from the vivid dream she'd had the night before. She couldn't shake the feeling that something was off, that her whole world had been turned upside down.

Just then, Rachel's bright smile broke through the haze of her thoughts, waving enthusiastically at Mia to join her and their friends Alex, Lyra, and Sofia.

Rachel's voice carried across the room, her excitement infectious. "Hey, Mia! Over here! We're heading to grab some lunch, want to join us?"

Mia nodded, her eyes locking onto Rachel's bright smile as she agreed to join them for lunch. "Yeah, sure, I'm starving," she said, her voice carrying across the room.

With a newfound sense of purpose, Mia slung her backpack over her shoulder and made her way towards her friends. As she approached, Rachel threw her arms around her in a warm hug. "We were just discussing where to grab lunch," Rachel said, her voice bubbling with excitement.

Mia laughed, feeling a sense of comfort and familiarity wash over her as she hugged Rachel back. "What's the plan, then?" she asked, her eyes scanning the group's faces.

Alex, Lyra, and Sofia chimed in, each suggesting a different restaurant or cuisine. The group's energy was infectious, and Mia found herself laughing and joking along with them.

As they made their way out of the classroom, the group's chatter and laughter filled the hallway.

As they left the classroom, the group's chatter and laughter continued, filling the hallway with a lively energy. Alex, being the self-proclaimed "food connoisseur" of the group, had already decided on a restaurant and was enthusiastically leading the way.

"Alright guys, let's go to that new Italian place downtown," Alex said, his eyes shining with excitement. "I've been hearing great things about it."

Lyra, who had parked her car nearby, nodded in agreement. "I'm down, let's go," she said, jingling her car keys.

Mia, Sofia, and Rachel decided to ride with Rachel, who was parked a few blocks away. Mia and Sofia settled into the comfortable seats as Rachel started the engine.

"So, what's the plan for this Italian place?" Sofia asked, her voice curious.

Mia shrugged, her eyes fixed on the road ahead. "No idea, but I'm sure Alex has already researched the menu and everything."

Rachel chuckled, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "Yeah, Alex is always on top of things."

After a short drive, they arrived at the Italian restaurant, a cozy-looking building with a rustic exterior and a warm, inviting atmosphere.

As they entered the Italian restaurant, the group's eyes were immediately drawn to the warm, inviting atmosphere. The decor was rustic and cozy, with exposed brick walls and wooden accents that seemed to transport them to a different era. The aroma of freshly baked bread and simmering sauces filled the air, tantalizing their taste buds and making their stomachs growl with anticipation.

Alex took charge of ordering, his eyes scanning the menu with a discerning gaze.

"I recommend the pasta carbonara," he said, his voice confident. "I've heard great things about it."

Lyra nodded in agreement, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. "Yeah, that sounds amazing."

Mia, Sofia, and Rachel chimed in, each ordering their own dishes with varying degrees of enthusiasm. The waiter, a charming Italian man with a thick accent, took their orders with a smile, his eyes twinkling with amusement.

As they waited for their food to arrive, Lyra asked. "So tell us, Mia, how is your project going with Karl Valois?"

Mia rolled her eyes dramatically as she shrugged, her expression dismissive. "Honestly, we haven't even discussed it yet. I don't even know if we're still paired or what the project is about." She laughed, a hint of frustration in her voice.

Rachel's eyes lit up with amusement. "The school festival is next week. Girl, you're going to fail if you don't get your act together," she said, her voice laced with a mix of amusement and concern. "You can't just wing it and expect to do well. What's going on with you and Karl? Are you guys even talking?"

Mia sighed, feeling a twinge of anxiety. "I know, I know. It's just been really weird. We haven't talked about the project at all, and I'm starting to think we're not even going to do it together."

Rachel's expression turned serious. "Mia, you need to get on that. The festival is next week, and you can't just show up empty-handed. What are you going to do if you don't have a project to present?"

Mia shrugged, feeling a sense of uncertainty. "I don't know. I guess I'll just have to talk to Karl and figure it out. But it's not like I can just force him to work with me. He's been really distant lately, and I'm starting to think he's lost interest in the project altogether."

Rachel's eyes narrowed. "Well, you need to get him to focus. You can't let him drag you down. You're a great student, Mia, and you deserve to do well. Just go talk to him and sort it out."

Mia nodded, feeling a sense of determination. "You're right. I'll go talk to him and see what's going on. I just hope it's not too late."

"Hey, have you guys heard what happened to the investigator who went missing last week?" Alex asked, his voice low and serious.

Lyra's expression turned concerned. "No, what's going on? I thought they said it was just a routine investigation gone wrong."

Alex leaned in, his voice barely above a whisper. "I was watching the news last night, and they showed a clip from a video that was posted online. It was really disturbing. Apparently, one of the investigators was attacked by a human, and... and it didn't end well."

Mia's heart skipped a beat as Alex's words hung in the air. She felt a sudden jolt of fear and unease, her mind racing with the implications of what she had just heard. Her eyes widened, and she felt her breath catch in her throat.

The group's conversation came to a halt, and they all stared at Alex in shock. Mia's eyes widened in horror. "What? That's insane. Why would someone do that?"

Rachel's voice was barely above a whisper. "Do they know who the person was? Was it someone from around here?"

Alex shook his head. "I don't think they've released any information about the person yet. But the video was pretty graphic. I didn't watch it for long, but... yeah, it was bad."

Sofia's eyes were wide with fear. "This is getting really scary. First, the weird occurrences in town, and now this. What's going on?"

"What kind of human would do something like that?" Lyra asked, her voice laced with a mix of fear and confusion. "I mean, investigators are supposed to be neutral, they're just trying to figure out what's going on. Why would someone attack them?"

Mia shook her head, her mind still reeling from the news. "I don't know, it's just so senseless. I can understand if someone was attacking them in self-defense or something, but to just attack them out of nowhere... that's just crazy."

Rachel's eyes narrowed. "Do you think it could have something to do with the weird occurrences in town? Maybe there's something bigger going on that we're not seeing."

Alex shrugged. "I don't know, but I do know that the video was posted online, and it's been getting a lot of attention. I saw some comments from people who are saying that it's a conspiracy, that the government is trying to cover something up."

Sofia's eyes widened. "A conspiracy? That's just crazy talk. I don't think we should be jumping to conclusions like that."

Mia nodded in agreement. "Yeah, we need to be careful about what we believe. We don't know what's really going on, and we shouldn't be spreading rumors or speculation."

Alex's voice dropped to a whisper. "Something scared me when they zoomed in on the murderer's face... it was like he was staring right at me."

The group's attention was riveted on Alex, their faces pale and concerned. "What do you mean?" Rachel asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Alex hesitated, his eyes darting around the table. "I don't know, it's just... his eyes seemed so... cold. And his expression... it was like he was enjoying what he was doing."

Mia shuddered, feeling a chill run down her spine. "That's creepy," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Lyra nodded in agreement. "Yeah, it's like he's not even human or something."

Sofia's eyes were wide with fear. "This is getting too real," she said, her voice trembling. "I don't like thinking about it."

Rachel's eyes narrowed. "Lyra could actually be right," she said, her voice serious. "It's actually possible that these murders are not humans."

The group's eyes widened in surprise, their faces reflecting a mix of shock and intrigue. "What do you mean?" Mia asked, her voice laced with curiosity.

Rachel leaned in, her voice barely above a whisper. "I've been doing some research on the strange occurrences in town, and I found some weird patterns. The victims all had something in common: They were all killed by strange animals."

Lyra's eyes sparkled with interest. "That's a great point, Rachel. Maybe the murderers are connected to something bigger than we thought."

Alex nodded, his eyes serious. "And what if the killer isn't human? What if it's something... else?"

Sofia's eyes were wide with fear. "You mean like a monster or something?"

Rachel nodded. "It's possible. We don't know what's out there, and we shouldn't rule out any possibilities."

Mia's thoughts crystallized into a chilling certainty: the murderers were vampires. Her mind echoed with questions, now tinged with a sense of eerie clarity. "But why would vampires be targeting investigators?" she wondered. "But what kind of creature could do something like that? And why are they targeting investigators?"

Lyra's voice was barely above a whisper. "Maybe they're trying to cover their tracks. Maybe they're trying to hide something."

The group's conversation was interrupted by the arrival of their food. As they began to eat, their discussion continued. Alex spoke up, his voice serious. "We need to be careful. If we're right, and the killer is non-human, we don't know what we're up against."

Lyra's voice was laced with caution as she spoke up. "Guys, I think we should just stay away from this case. It's getting too intense, and we don't know what we're dealing with. Let's just focus on our own lives and forget about the investigation."

Mia nodded slowly, her mind still reeling from the implications of the case. "You're right, Lyra. We don't know what we're dealing with, and it's not worth risking our safety." Rachel and Sofia nodded in agreement, their faces reflecting a mix of concern and relief.

Alex, however, looked unconvinced. "But what if we're the only ones who can uncover the truth? What if we're the only ones who can stop whatever is happening?" His eyes locked onto Lyra's.

Lyra's voice was firm. "Alex, we're not detectives. We're just students. We can't take on a case like this. It's too much for us."

The group nodded in agreement, their faces set with determination. "You're right, Lyra," Mia said, her voice firm. "We'll let the detectives do their job. It's not our responsibility to solve this case."

Rachel and Sofia nodded in agreement, their faces reflecting a mix of relief and concern. Alex, however, still looked unconvinced, his eyes lingering on the conversation.

"I understand what you're saying," Alex said, his voice measured. "But what if we're the only ones who can uncover the truth?"

Lyra's voice was firm. "Alex, we're not trained for this. We can't take on a case like this. It's too much for us."

The group nodded in agreement, their faces set with determination. "Let's just focus on our own lives and let the detectives do their job," Mia said, her voice firm.

With a collective nod, the group agreed to step back and let the authorities handle the case. They changed the subject, their conversation turning to lighter topics as they continued their lunch. The tension in the air dissipated, replaced by a sense of relief and camaraderie. They laughed and joked.
