The trial continued, but so much had changed. Chief Lucas was not getting any good points. He had hoped for it to end on the second day, but it was impossible—not when Claude had taken the lives of three others alongside his. The court was swimming with evidence, and now their greatest fear was about to unfold.
Benz took over the floor, his eyes glittering with something. Chief Lucas's hands trembled from beneath the table, but he wore a neutral face.
"Chief Lucas, how do you sleep at night?"
"Huh?" Chief Lucas blinked, and so did the rest of the court.
"Mr. Benz, rephrase your question," the judge ordered.
Benz nodded. "What I mean to ask is—how do you sleep at night knowing one action—just one decision—and a family… Two generations are gone like the wind?"
Chief Lucas opened his mouth, but no words came out.
