Chapter 13 - 13. The Blackwood Secrets

"Ariana, wait!" Kaelen's voice was low, desperate.

She froze at the edge of the old library, where dust danced in the air, untouched for years. The library was an ancient relic, filled with forgotten knowledge, and its hushed silence was enveloping. Her hands shook as she held the fragile document, a relic of her family's past. The pages crinkled under her fingers, but it didn't matter. What mattered was what she'd just discovered.

"Kaelen, you need to see this." Her voice was a whisper, the weight of her words heavier than any of the secrets they'd already uncovered. The atmosphere was thick with tension, as if the very walls were holding their breath in anticipation.

Kaelen's footsteps echoed heavily as he approached her, his usual confident demeanor replaced by a rare vulnerability. He'd always seemed like a force of nature—dominant, untouchable—but now, as he stood beside her, his eyes locked on the document in her hands, he looked like a man on the verge of unraveling. The flickering candlelight cast shadows across his face, illuminating the worry etched in his features.

"What is it?" His voice was tight, like he already knew something terrible was coming. The air around them felt charged, heavy with unspoken fears.

"I—" Ariana's breath hitched. She could feel the trembling in her hands intensifying. "I found this in the attic. It's an old journal, from someone in my family. It's talking about... the Blackwood bloodline. It's not just about—about humans, Kaelen. It's about supernatural power." Her heart raced as she spoke, the weight of her discovery crashing over her like a wave.

Kaelen's eyes narrowed, his jaw clenching. "What are you saying?" The urgency in his tone made her heart ache.

Ariana swallowed hard, her heart pounding against her chest, echoing the chaos in her mind. She turned the page, her fingers brushing over the faded ink. There it was—the name that had haunted her for years—Lucian Thorn. But this time, it wasn't just a name. It was a plan meticulously detailed in a way that made her skin crawl.

She read aloud, her voice shaking, "Lucian... he's not just after you. He wants to use me. My bloodline. He's trying to open a portal to another world—a world full of power, a world where he can rule..." The words felt foreign, yet familiar, as if they were unlocking memories buried deep within her.

Kaelen's hand shot out, grabbing her wrist with a grip that was both possessive and desperate. "What do you mean? Another world?" The intensity of his gaze sent shivers down her spine.

Ariana's eyes met his, the realization sinking in like a dagger to the heart. "He wants to use my blood to unlock the portal. He's been planning this for years, Kaelen. All this time... all the things I thought were just coincidences—they're not. My family has been tied to the supernatural for generations. And Lucian... he's been manipulating me, pulling me into this mess." The weight of her words felt like an anchor, dragging her deeper into a sea of dread.

Kaelen's grip tightened, but it wasn't in anger. It was fear. Fear for her. "No. No, Ariana, you can't—" His voice was rough, raw with emotion. "This—this can't be happening." The anguish in his eyes made her want to break down.

Ariana pulled her wrist from his grasp, the document crinkling in her hand as her fingers curled into a fist. "It is happening, Kaelen. And I—I can't keep pretending that everything's going to be okay. You can't protect me from this. You can't stop Lucian by yourself." The vulnerability in her voice echoed in the empty library, amplifying the gravity of their situation.

Kaelen's face twisted with frustration. "I'm not going to let him use you, Ariana. You're mine to protect now." His words were fierce, filled with a determination that both comforted and terrified her.

Ariana's breath caught in her throat. The words were possessive, but they didn't sting. They... comforted her. She had never felt more connected to him than she did now, standing together, staring down a fate they could no longer outrun. The bond they shared felt like a lifeline in the chaos.

"Kaelen, I need you to understand something." Ariana's voice was soft but firm, steadying herself against the storm. "Lucian has been playing us. He wants me to be the key, the one who can open that portal. And once it's open, he'll be unstoppable." The implications of her words loomed over them like a dark cloud.

Kaelen's gaze darkened, and Ariana could see the rage building behind his eyes, the beast within him struggling to get free. "Then we stop him. Whatever it takes." His resolve was unyielding, but she could sense the fear lurking beneath it.

"But we can't just fight him like we did before," Ariana said, her voice shaking. "We don't even know how to stop it once the portal opens. And the longer we wait, the stronger Lucian gets." The urgency of their situation pressed upon her like a vice.

Kaelen's jaw clenched, his eyes flashing with a dangerous mix of anger and determination. "We'll find a way. I won't let him take you. I won't let him destroy everything." The passion in his voice ignited a flicker of hope within her.

Ariana shook her head, her heart breaking. "It's not just about me anymore. It's about stopping something much bigger than either of us. Something that could destroy everything." Her words hung in the air, heavy with the weight of their reality.

She could see the conflict in his eyes—his need to protect her warring with the bigger picture. But before he could respond, a voice cut through the tension.

"You really think you can stop me, Kaelen?" The voice was cold, mocking, sending a chill down Ariana's spine.

Ariana's heart skipped a beat as she turned toward the door. Lucian.

He stood in the doorway, leaning casually against the frame, a smug smile playing on his lips. He was everything Kaelen was not—clean-shaven, dressed in a tailored suit, and oozing an arrogance that made Ariana's skin crawl. The contrast was jarring, and it sent a wave of dread washing over her.

"I thought I'd give you both some time," Lucian continued, his voice dripping with amusement. "But it seems you've discovered something interesting." He stepped into the room, his eyes flicking to the document in Ariana's hand, a predatory glint in his gaze.

"What do you want, Lucian?" Kaelen growled, his fists clenched at his sides. The air around him seemed to crackle with energy, and Ariana could almost feel the pull of the werewolf inside him, wanting to break free. The tension was palpable, thick enough to cut.

Lucian raised an eyebrow, his gaze flicking between them, amusement dancing in his eyes. "Oh, I'm just here to remind you of the inevitable, Kaelen. You can't stop what's coming. You never could. And Ariana?" He smiled, a twisted, knowing smile that sent shivers down her spine. "She's just the key to what I've been after. It's a shame she didn't realize it sooner." His words dripped with contempt, and Ariana felt a surge of anger rise within her.

Ariana felt the blood drain from her face. She stepped back, her breath catching in her throat. "You—" Her voice trembled, disbelief lacing her words. "You're using me. All this time... you've been manipulating me." The realization hit her like a punch to the gut.

Lucian's smile widened, his arrogance palpable. "It was always part of the plan, darling. You just didn't know it. But now that you do, well... it's too late to turn back." His tone was mocking, and it made her blood boil.

Kaelen's stance shifted, his body tensing as if preparing for a fight. "You won't get away with this, Lucian." The fury in his voice was undeniable, a fire that ignited the room.
