Chapter 47 - The Trivela

As the referee's whistle signaled the start of the second half, the pitch was alive with anticipation. América held a slender 1-0 lead over Tigres UANL, setting the stage for an intense continuation of play.

América began the half with purpose, aiming to extend their advantage.

Santi dictated the tempo from midfield, delivering crisp, incisive passes that probed Tigres' defensive lines.

Charlie persistently attacked down the left flank, utilizing his pace to challenge the right-back and deliver crosses into the penalty area.

Despite América's early pressure, Tigres' defense remained organized, effectively intercepting crosses and limiting clear-cut opportunities.

Tigres began to find their rhythm, seeking to exploit spaces left by América's attacking endeavors

Their midfielder, Pizarro orchestrated play from deep, distributing passes to initiate swift counterattacks.

Álvarez, the Tigres striker, made intelligent runs behind América's defensive line, testing their alertness.

In the 58th minute, a pivotal moment unfolded. Álvarez received a through ball and surged into the penalty area. Toro, in an attempt to halt the attack, executed a forceful tackle that the referee deemed reckless, resulting in a penalty for Tigres and a yellow card for Toro.

Álvarez stepped up for the penalty, with composure, he slotted the ball into the bottom right corner, leveling the score at 1-1. Buoyed by the equalizer, Tigres intensified their offensive efforts:

They increased their pressing, forcing América into hurried passes and capitalizing on misplaced balls.

The Tigres coach was visibly animated on the sidelines, urging his team to maintain the pressure and seize control of the match.

América's defense faced a period of sustained pressure, requiring crucial interventions from Ríos and Toro to prevent Tigres from taking the lead.

In the 65th minute, América sought to regain composure and reassert their dominance; Diego began to find pockets of space on the right wing, delivering probing crosses into the box.

Santi and Charlie combined effectively, attempting to dismantle Tigres' defensive setup.

In the 72nd minute, Diego received the ball near the right touchline. Spotting Fernando Valdez making a late run into the box, Diego delivered a precise cross. Valdez met the ball with a well-executed volley, directing it past the Tigres goalkeeper and restoring América's lead to 2-1.

"GOOOOOOAL!"

With no hesitation, Fernando took off toward the sideline, screaming with both arms swinging in the air. He pointed to Diego first with a silent gesture of gratitude, then kissed the badge on his chest.

He slid on one knee near the bench with his fist raised high and as he rose, he beat his chest once, twice. The message was loud without a word: This is our house.

The rest of the team charged him, Solano leading the way, Diego grabbing him by the shoulders and Santi giving him a light punch on the arm, grinning. The bench emptied halfway. Even Herrera cracked a smile, nodding as he clapped from the technical area.

Tigres looked stunned. Fernando just stood tall, surrounded by teammates, soaking in the roar. He didn't need to say anything.

He had just put América back in the fight and everyone knew it.

Tigres responded with urgency, pushing forward in search of another equalizer: They dominated possession, circulating the ball around América's defensive third, probing for openings.

In the 78th minute, a lofted cross from the left wing found Álvarez unmarked in the box. His powerful header seemed destined for the net but Ríos executed a timely goal-line clearance, preserving América's advantage.

The Tigres coach continued to bark orders from the technical area, demanding greater urgency and precision from his players.

10 minutes to stoppage time, América aimed to capitalize on the spaces left by Tigres' aggressive positioning; Lucho, advancing from right-back, played a forward pass to Santi near the edge of the penalty area.

Santi showcased his flair with a series of step-overs, drawing multiple defenders toward him and creating a gap in the defense.

In the 81st minute, recognizing Charlie's movement into the vacated space, Santi executed an exquisite trivela pass with the outside of his foot. Charlie controlled the ball in stride and noticing the goalkeeper off his line, he delivered a delicate chip that sailed into the net, extending América's lead to 3-1.

"GOOOOOOAL!"

As Charlie's chip kissed the net and floated down behind the stunned Tigres keeper, the turf erupted. The América bench jumped with arms raised and coaches yelling with fists clenched.

Charlie didn't hesitate. He turned and sprinted toward the corner flag with arms stretched wide and face lit with emotion. The weight he had been carrying; the missed chances and the personal vendetta against Tigres, all came flooding out in that run. He slid on his knees with fists pounding the air as his teammates stormed toward him.

Santi was the first to reach him. They collided in a chest bump with raw adrenaline bouncing between them. Charlie grabbed the back of Santi's head and yelled into his ear, "That was perfect!"

Toro, Ríos, Diego, Solano; they all piled in. A dogpile of celebration. One team, one breath and one purpose.

The crowd felt it. They waved flags. They broke out. It wasn't just about the scoreline. It was about how they scored. That chemistry. That fight. That moment.

As the referee pulled them back to continue the play, the América boys jogged back into position, still grinning, some clapping and some pointing toward the sky.

Santi, jogging back toward midfield, looked up briefly. Not to show off. Just a quiet nod to everything he was working for.

There were still minutes left to play. But the heart of América U19 had already made a statement.

With a two-goal cushion, América focused on game management; They maintained possession, utilizing short, controlled passes to frustrate Tigres and run down the clock.

Strategic substitutions were made to introduce fresh legs and reinforce the defensive structure.

Tigres' attempts to mount a late comeback were effectively neutralized and the referee's final whistle confirmed América's hard-fought 3-1 victory.

América's triumph was a testament to their tactical discipline, resilience under pressure and ability to capitalize on key moments. Despite facing periods of intense pressure and a momentary setback, they showcased their quality in critical situations. The combination of defensive solidity, midfield creativity and clinical finishing ensured they secured all three points, much to the delight of their supporters.
