Chapter 1 - Where It All Starts

The early morning sun poured through the windows of Sakura High School, painting the polished gym floors with streaks of gold. Outside, cherry blossoms swirled in the spring breeze, lazily drifting past the tall gates of the school. Students were already starting to gather in clusters, chatting, laughing, and complaining about the first week back from break.

Inside, Liam Tanaka leaned against his locker, a crooked grin tugging at his lips as he scrolled through his phone. Tall and lean, with messy black hair that always seemed to fall perfectly over his brown eyes, he had the kind of effortless charm that made people naturally gravitate toward him. His basketball jersey hung from his gym bag. He carried himself with an easygoing vibe.

His teammates were already tossing crumpled paper balls across the hallway like it was a mini basketball court laughing and yelling as they took shots.

"Yo, Liam! Are you coming to morning practice or what?" Daichi, his best friend and the team's shooting guard, called out, tossing a balled-up note at Liam's head.

Liam caught it without even looking, flashing a smirk. "Yeah, yeah, I'm coming. Don't rush me. "

Daichi rolled his eyes. "Please. Your passing was all over the place last game. Coach's gonna have a word with you if you keep trying those crazy moves."

"Bro, that was strategy," Liam said, laughing as he finally shoved his phone into his bag. "Gotta keep the other team guessing, right? Point guard magic."

Even though he joked around, Liam was one of the best players on the team, and everyone knew it. But what most people didn't see were the long hours he put in when no one was watching, perfecting his footwork, tightening his dribbles, and working on his jump shot until late.

As he slung his bag over his shoulder and headed toward the gym, Liam glanced out one of the windows overlooking the school courtyard. Groups of students passed by, some laughing, some hurrying to class. For a moment, he couldn't help but think that this was their last chance, Senior year. Last chance to take the team to nationals.

Meanwhile in another wing of the school, The beautiful Zoey Nakamura sat quietly in her classroom, adjusting the straps of her volleyball bag. Petite and athletic, with striking white hair tied into a loose ponytail, she had soft, light blue eyes that always seemed to glow when she smiled.

Her volleyball uniform peeked out from under her school jacket, and her knees were still a little bruised from yesterday's practice, a badge of honor in her mind.

"Zoey, are you even listening?" Emi, her best friend and teammate, nudged her arm playfully. Zoey blinked and laughed softly, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "Sorry, I was thinking about practice later. Coach wants us to run new drills."

Emi grinned. "You're always thinking about volleyball! You need to relax. Maybe even talk to a guy for once?"

Zoey's cheeks flushed pink. "W-What? I do talk to guys. Sometimes." That was a lie.

"Yeah, when you're asking them to move so you can hit the ball," Emi teased.

Zoey looked down at her hands, playing with the zipper on her bag. "Well, that counts… right?"

Zoey smiled shyly, She loved volleyball, but sometimes felt like it was the only thing she was good at. The pressure to stay on top of her game to not disappoint her team was always there, quietly pushing her to work harder.

As the bell rang and students started shuffling out for break, Zoey stood up, slinging her bag over her shoulder.

"Are you coming to the gym now?" Emi asked, already pulling her ponytail tight.

"Yeah, I want to get in some practice before class starts."

"Of course you do," Emi said with a laugh.

The gym was already alive with the sound of basketballs hitting the floor, shoes squeaking, and the sharp whistles of the coach.

Liam was running drills with the boys, his usual playful attitude shifting to sharp focus as he launched a perfect pass across the court. As point guard and top scorer, he was the one who had to read the game, create plays, and finish them when no one else could. anticipate every move, every play. His black hair clung slightly to his forehead as he worked up a sweat, his brown eyes narrowing as he calculated the next pass.

"Tanaka! Watch your spacing!" the coach barked.

"Got it!" Liam called back, moving swiftly to adjust.

Daichi caught Liam's next pass and shot a clean three-pointer. "Better," Daichi called. "You almost looked like a real point guard there!"

"Ha, keep talking. I'll make you work for those shots in a real game," Liam shot back, but he grinned. This was where he felt most alive on the court, in motion.

On the other side of campus, Zoey slipped on her volleyball knee pads and tied her shoes tighter, ready to get started. She loved the feel of the court under her feet, the rush of making the perfect spike, the sound of the ball echoing in the gym.

"Alright girls, let's run that defense drill!" Coach's voice echoed across the volleyball side of the gym. Zoey's eyes focused on the net as she got into position, her muscles already moving on instinct.

What neither Zoey nor Liam knew was that soon, their separate worlds would collide — literally — when the school announced a shared gym schedule for all sports teams because of renovations on the second court.

For now, though, they were just two students chasing their dreams, completely unaware of how much one stranger could change everything.
