Chapter 46 - The Beast Below

The Beast Below

---

1. The Truth Revealed (Marcus's Deception)

Marcus's group sat around the fire, their faces gaunt and pale.

✔ Their clothing was tattered, their weapons rusted and crude.

✔ Their eyes darted nervously, their bodies tense with barely-contained fear.

✔ They had been running from something. But not just from the Hollow Ones.

"So," Marcus began, his voice calm and measured. "You want answers. And I've got them."

Brian's gaze was like iron. "Start talking."

Marcus's eyes flickered to his own people before he continued. "What you're feeling? That energy coming from the ground? It's real. And it's powerful. But it's not just the land. It's something underneath."

"Underneath?" Maya echoed, her eyes narrowing.

Marcus nodded. "Yeah. There's a cavern not far from here. Filled with crystals. The air down there practically hums with power. Like nothing you've ever felt."

"And you've been there?" Brian asked, suspicion creeping into his voice.

Marcus's gaze lowered. "We tried. Got close enough to see the crystals. Close enough to feel what they could do. But we weren't the only ones drawn to it."

Ghost let out a low growl, his amber eyes locked on Marcus.

"What else is down there?" Brian demanded.

Marcus hesitated, his hands twitching. "A beast. Something that feeds off the crystals. Something that grows stronger the more it consumes."

Naomi's voice was sharp. "And you thought leading us here was a good idea?"

Marcus's expression hardened. "We didn't lead you here. You brought yourselves. But now that you're here… we could help each other."

Maya's claws flexed, her gaze filled with suspicion. "You want us to kill this thing, don't you?"

Marcus's silence was answer enough.

2. The Cavern of Crystals

The entrance to the cavern was hidden by thick foliage and jagged rocks, its mouth yawning like a beast waiting to swallow them whole.

✔ The air was cold and damp, the scent of earth and rot clinging to their skin.

✔ The darkness was almost tangible, a heavy weight pressing down on their shoulders.

✔ And beneath it all, a pulsing hum of energy throbbed through the ground like a heartbeat.

Brian's senses were stretched to their limits, his connection to the land flickering like a dying flame.

The land itself was trembling, its awareness focused on what lay beneath.

"Whatever's down there, it's strong," Brian growled. "And it's feeding off the crystals."

Naomi's eyes flicked between her instruments and the cavern's entrance. "The readings are off the charts. It's like the crystals are being devoured… and transformed."

"Transformed into what?" Maya asked, her voice tight.

"Into something worse," Naomi replied. "Something that shouldn't exist."

Brian's jaw tightened. "We need to deal with it. Now."

3. Marcus's Betrayal

They descended into the cavern, their footsteps echoing off the stone walls.

✔ Crystals jutted from the ground and ceiling, their surfaces shimmering with unnatural light.

✔ The air was thick with energy, a suffocating force that made their skin prickle.

✔ And deep within the darkness, something moved.

Marcus's group hung back, their eyes darting between the shadows and the crystals.

Their expressions were filled with greed and desperation.

"This place… it's real," one of Marcus's followers whispered. "We could be gods with power like this."

Marcus's smile was thin and sharp. "All we have to do is get to the crystals. And let them do the dirty work."

Maya's claws flexed, her voice a low snarl. "You were planning to use us as bait."

Marcus shrugged. "You're stronger than us. More experienced. If anyone can kill that thing, it's you."

"Then why don't you go back to your camp and wait?" Brian growled. "Before I decide to leave you here."

Marcus's face twisted with anger. "You need us. Whether you want to admit it or not. And if you try to go down there alone, you'll just end up like the others."

"Others?" Naomi repeated.

"People who thought they could harness the power of the crystals," Marcus replied. "They all died. Torn apart by whatever's down there. And you'll be next unless you let us help."

Brian's fists clenched, his body coiled with tension. "If you get in our way, I'll kill you myself."

Marcus's eyes glowed with greed. "We'll see."

4. The Beast Below

The deeper they ventured, the more intense the energy became.

✔ The crystals' glow had turned sickly, their surfaces cracking and oozing a strange, viscous substance.

✔ The air was thick with the scent of decay, the very walls seeming to pulse with a terrible, ravenous hunger.

✔ And then they heard it.

A low, rumbling growl that shook the earth beneath their feet.

The creature emerged from the darkness, its body a twisted amalgamation of flesh, crystal, and shadow.

✔ Its eyes burned with unnatural light, its limbs coiled and rippling with monstrous power.

✔ Its body was covered in jagged, crystalline growths, their edges sharpened into lethal spikes.

✔ And its roar was a sound of pure, unfiltered rage.

Brian's muscles tensed, his fire raging within him. "That's it. That's what's drawing the energy."

Naomi's voice trembled. "It's feeding off the crystals. And the more it consumes, the stronger it gets."

"Then we kill it," Maya snarled, her body brimming with barely-contained energy.

5. The Attack

The battle was pure chaos.

✔ Brian's fire tore through the darkness, scorching the creature's flesh and crystal alike.

✔ Maya's claws ripped into its hide, her movements swift and brutal.

✔ Ghost's pack lunged at the beast, their fangs sinking into anything they could reach.

But the creature was relentless.

Its body healed as fast as they could wound it, the crystals embedded in its flesh radiating with raw power.

The symbiote within Brian and Maya screamed for more, their bodies straining against their own limitations.

Naomi's voice echoed over the radio. "Brian! The crystals are enhancing it. If you can disrupt their energy flow, you might be able to weaken it."

Brian's eyes narrowed. "And how the hell am I supposed to do that?"

"By destroying the crystals in the cavern walls," Naomi replied. "If they're feeding it, then cutting off the source might be our only chance."

Brian's fists clenched, his mind racing. "Maya. Ghost. You heard her. Focus on the crystals."

And as the battle raged on, the cavern itself began to tremble.
