Chapter 16 - Facility

The facility was built into the side of a mountain with a door which could barely fit an MTV. The odd red colour of the trees around put me on edge, it looked like some fantasy tree which killed humans. Even at the entrance the radiation I could feel hit the massive amount of radiation hit the second skin of the elemental resistance, and I could only imagine how much would be further inside.

"Wow, the radiation is really overpowering here." 7 commented.

"Indeed, I do also have to warn your group that once we go down to the lower floors you will have to focus more on your elemental resistance. The radiation in parts can be so intense that without focus ones barrier will be torn through, leaving your body exposed to radiation. Which would likely cause the worst death possible." 34 said without a hint of emotion.

'And here I thought 13 was aloof. She might even rival 3 in that category.'

Everyone in my squad reinforced their elemental barrier, it was clear enough despite the fact it was impossible to physically see the second layer of skin.

36 turned around from his position as our combined group's vanguard. "We have cleared this section and the next, further along there are more powerful creatures."

"Aren't the cursed weak to radiation, why would they chill out here?" 7 asked

"Who knows. All we do know is that they are here, and they are in the way." 36 replied coldly

We walked through these long white corridors in silence. There was not a single piece of life here apart from the cursed themselves. Not even weeds dared to venture into this place.

Finally arriving at the door to the third section we all readied ourselves. Once the door was opened I quickly realised why they needed backup.

49 almost screamed behind us all "Oh my god what the fuck is that."

It looked almost exactly like the grotesque flesh monster we passed on the way here. Of course 49, or anyone else in my squad for that matter wouldn't have seen it like I had.

36 turned around with pure anger on his face. "Is this bitch trying to get us killed?"

The flesh monster had obviously heard the not so quiet scream of 49.

'I'm going to have to lecture her later.'

As the flesh monster slowly slimed itself through the doorway I considered that I didn't actually have a way to kill the thing.

"Retreat." 36 called without hesitation.

'At least he is fairly competent as a leader.'

The flesh monster was incredibly slow so no escape scene transpired but we all sprinted towards the doors to the last section and closed it shut.

36 turned around towards 49. "What the fuck are you doing. Are you trying to get us all killed or just retarded? Fuck, we should have just done this alone."

As 36 pressed his hand to his eyes 49 meekly said. "I- I'm sorry."

36 only seemed to be more angered at this. "Are you fucking joking-"

"Right back off, she made a mistake. Its not that bad, lets just figure out how we should approach this." I said, putting my hand between them.

"You're defending her? Now this is going to be ten times harder." 36 stated

"Not defending her, she is in the wrong. Also how would this be harder?" I questioned.

"Because that thing is now in the second section now, and god knows how many others too." 36 almost shouted.

I looked to the door as if I was scared the monster could hear through it despite its sheer thickness.

"How is that any different to how it was before, if anything now the ones still in the other section are even less likely to hear. Meaning we have them separated." I rebutted

"Yeah but now we have their attention."

"So? It would be hard to avoid their attention anyway, you know this. The plan relied on how slow they are."

36 who was out of arguments simply looked at me in anger, then eventually calmed himself then commented. "You sure are defending her now aren't you? Well whatever."

"We stay to the same plan." 36 said as he proceeded to open the door.

No one responded, but we still readied ourselves to follow his lead.

On the other side of the door and along the corridor was the flesh monster, Its size was much less then the unholy behemoth from last night but it was no less horrifying to see.

Quickly me, 7 and 33 all walked forwards with spears created from 13's blessing and further enchanted with 36's ability to increase the piercing effects of objects.

As the flesh monster came closer we stabbed spears straight through it and then into the ground. The spears had hooks to ensure once pierced, the monster could never escape them nor move around the floor.

As 13 handed us a second round of spears I jumped back as the liquid like body of the abomination had nearly touched my legs.

After landing on the ground I stabbed the offending section of the flesh monster and bolted it straight to the ground.

While the monster moved like a liquid, that was merely because of its revolting form. it still had to conform to its shape and therefore could be trapped by these spears.

As me, 7, and 33 backed off backed off 36 walked forwards instead with two bottles with rags lit on fire hanging from the bottle.

As I questioned in my head what the hell he was doing he threw the bottles onto the flesh monster and I watched at the bottles smashed and the liquid inside lit on fire.

The flesh monster convulsed as it burned, it would likely screamed if it had a mouth.

We only took a second or two before returning to our senses, picking up another spear which was much longer and thicker then the ones before and with it I ran towards the creature. As the massive spear impaled the monster I let go of the spear and fell back as 7 repeated what I had done.

This repeated only a few times before the ones who had attacked the creature suddenly reacted at the same time.

"This thing is a rabbit?" 7 blurted out.

'What?'

"They previously had a better appearance but undoubtably the years they spent here must have caused a colossal magnitude of harm to their entire existence, let alone their bodies." 34 commented.

36 walked up to the dead fizzling flesh and touched it, to which the entire hunk of a corpse instantly disappeared. Leaving no trace of it behind

Further along the hallway was another abomination was revealed. This creature still had some limbs on its horrific body, they just happened to all be in the wrong places. It was much smaller and presumably weaker too.

7 walked up to it with a spear, stabbed it and it died. 7 touched it and much like all other users of the atlas system it caused the corpse to disappear.

'That was... easy.'

No other abominations were inside the second section and so we simply continued on towards the third section.

At the door to the next section was another large abomination.

As I ran forwards with a spear in each hand, approaching the massive flesh monster I realised just how tiring this was going to be.

'This is going to be a really long day.'

--

"This is good progress, we have made it to the sixth section." 36 announced.

I looked at the entrance to the god forsaken facility while beads of sweat rolled down my face.

'Why was it so hot in there? Wasn't the underground cold?'

Elemental resistance did protect us against the heat and radiation completely but elemental resistance only made the feeling of head worse while actually allowing us to feel the radiation.

Itching the back of my head I genuinely questioned why I didn't just disobey the order.

The answer was simple enough though, I would die if it did. Even if I survived this, the moment I got back to civilisation I would be executed.

"We need to go find water before the sun sets, our squads supply is running low." I announced to which everyone on my squad stood up alongside me.

"I am able to guide you to a river nearby." 34 said with no emotion on her incredibly aloof face.

'Wow, she's caring? Wait no she probably just wants us to be on our best game tomorrow or something.'

"Sure, that would be a great help." I said, while trying to put on a smile.

"Lead the way." She responded.
