Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Taking Back Her Power

Elena had spent years being powerless.

A pawn in her stepmother's schemes. A fool for a man who never loved her. A victim of betrayal.

Not anymore.

Tonight, she would remind the world—and herself—exactly who she was.

The Scandal That Shook the Sinclair Family

The next morning, high society woke up to headlines that sent shockwaves through the business world.

"Sinclair Enterprises Under Scrutiny: Allegations of Fraud and Embezzlement"

"Dominic Sinclair's Business Dealings Exposed—Shady Transactions & Illegal Bidding"

"Elena Carter's Breakup Revenge? How the Heiress Outsmarted Her Ex-Fiancé"

Elena sat in her penthouse, sipping coffee as the news anchors discussed the scandal.

Her phone buzzed relentlessly—calls from journalists, old friends, even distant relatives who suddenly "cared" about her well-being.

She ignored them all.

Let them panic.

Dominic had built his wealth by using her family's connections, tricking her into signing away assets, and covering up his illegal dealings. But she had known where to strike.

And now?

He was drowning.

Dominic's Fury – A Desperate Move

At the Sinclair estate, Dominic paced the room, his face dark with fury.

"Who the hell leaked this?!" he barked, slamming a newspaper onto the table.

Lily sat beside him, pale-faced. "We don't know yet… but it's bad, Dominic. Investors are pulling out. The board is panicking."

His mother, Miranda, clenched her jaw. "This wasn't random. Someone did this on purpose."

Dominic narrowed his eyes. His mind worked fast, connecting the dots.

Then, realization struck.

"Elena."

Lily flinched. "You don't know that for sure—"

"She was the only one who had access to this information," he growled. "And she had the motive."

Lily swallowed hard. "What… what do we do?"

Dominic's gaze turned cold.

"I'll handle it."

A Confrontation – But Not the One She Expected

Elena was expecting Dominic to come knocking.

What she wasn't expecting… was for Alexander Reid to show up at her doorstep instead.

She froze when she saw him standing in the hallway of her penthouse building, dressed in a sleek black suit, his expression unreadable.

Heart pounding, she opened the door. "Mr. Reid."

Alexander stepped inside without an invitation, his sharp gaze scanning her apartment before settling on her.

"Interesting move, Miss Carter," he said, voice low.

Elena crossed her arms. "I take it you saw the news."

He smirked. "The entire city saw the news."

She lifted her chin. "Consider it proof that I can handle my enemies."

He studied her for a long moment before stepping closer—too close. The air between them thickened with tension.

"Do you know what you've done?" he asked.

She refused to back down. "Yes."

A slow, dark amusement flickered in his eyes. "Good."

Elena blinked. "What?"

Alexander chuckled. "You just made things more interesting, Miss Carter. And I enjoy a good game."

Her pulse quickened. "So… does that mean you accept my proposal?"

He tilted his head, pretending to think. "Not quite."

Her stomach twisted. "Then why are you here?"

Alexander's smirk deepened. "Because now that you've publicly declared war on Dominic Sinclair… you need protection."

Elena frowned. "I can handle myself."

He chuckled, reaching out to brush a stray strand of hair behind her ear. She stilled at the unexpected touch.

"I have no doubt that you're capable," he murmured. "But let's be clear, Elena. Dominic isn't your only enemy. There are others who will see you as a threat now."

She swallowed. "And you're here to… what? Protect me?"

He leaned in slightly, his breath warm against her skin. "I'm here to test you."

Her stomach flipped. "Test me how?"

He stepped back, eyes glinting with something unreadable. "Dinner. Tonight. My place."

Elena frowned. "You want me to cook?"

Alexander chuckled. "No, Miss Carter. I want you to impress me."

Then, without another word, he turned and walked out, leaving her standing there—stunned.

Dominic's Next Move – A Dangerous Game

As the sun set, Dominic Sinclair sat in his car, parked outside a high-rise building.

His jaw clenched as he watched Elena's silhouette through the window.

His ex-fiancée.

The woman who had humiliated him.

The woman who had destroyed his reputation overnight.

His phone buzzed.

He answered without looking. "What?"

A low voice spoke. "We have an opportunity."

Dominic's grip tightened on the steering wheel. "Go on."

"Elena Carter thinks she's won," the man continued. "But we can make sure she loses everything. Again."

A slow, cruel smile spread across Dominic's lips.

"Tell me more."

A Test of Strength – Dinner with a Devil

Elena stood in front of Alexander Reid's penthouse door, her heart pounding harder than she cared to admit.

She wasn't nervous—she refused to be.

But something about him unsettled her in a way even Dominic never had.

Taking a deep breath, she knocked.

The door swung open almost immediately.

Alexander stood before her, looking as sharp and unreadable as ever, dressed in an open-collared black shirt, his sleeves rolled up slightly. The sight of him—so powerful, so effortlessly in control—sent a ripple of awareness through her.

He stepped aside, gesturing for her to enter.

"Miss Carter."

Elena walked in, determined not to show hesitation. The penthouse was modern, sleek, and minimalistic—just like the man himself.

She turned to him. "I assume there's a reason you invited me here."

Alexander's lips curved slightly as he walked past her, pouring himself a drink.

"I wanted to see how you handle pressure," he said casually.

Elena raised an eyebrow. "Is that so?"

He gestured to the elegantly set dining table. A full-course meal was already prepared.

"I don't trust easily," he continued, taking a sip of his drink. "If I agree to a contract marriage, I need to know exactly who I'm dealing with."

Elena crossed her arms. "And how does dinner accomplish that?"

Alexander smirked. "Because, Miss Carter… tonight, you'll be surrounded by my business associates. People who will try to tear you apart the moment they sense weakness."

Her stomach clenched.

So that was the game.

A test.

Alexander wanted to see if she could hold her ground in his world—the world of billionaires, ruthless businessmen, and power struggles.

Good.

She welcomed the challenge.

"I hope they're prepared," she said smoothly. "Because I don't break easily."

Alexander's dark eyes gleamed with approval.

"Let's see if that's true."

The Sharks at the Table

Dinner was warfare in disguise.

Alexander's closest business partners were in attendance—powerful men and women who ruled industries with iron fists.

They studied Elena like a wolf pack assessing new prey.

"So, Miss Carter," one of them, an older man with a sharp gaze, said. "A contract marriage with Alexander? Ambitious."

Another woman smirked. "It's a smart move, I'll give you that. Marrying a man like Alexander guarantees you protection… but what exactly do you bring to the table?"

The challenge was clear.

They wanted to see if she would crack under pressure.

Elena smiled—sweet, deceptive, and sharp as a blade.

"I bring something invaluable," she said smoothly.

"Oh?"

She leaned forward slightly. "Leverage."

The table went silent.

Even Alexander tilted his head slightly, intrigued.

Elena continued, her voice unwavering. "I know the Sinclair family's weaknesses inside and out. I know their allies, their enemies, and their deepest vulnerabilities. Marrying me isn't just a business transaction—it's a strategic checkmate."

The older man's eyebrows rose slightly, but he nodded in approval.

Alexander finally spoke, his voice rich with amusement. "You do enjoy making bold moves, don't you?"

Elena lifted her wine glass, meeting his gaze. "I only make moves I intend to win."

A slow smirk played on his lips.

She had passed his test.

But before she could fully enjoy her victory, her phone buzzed.

She glanced down at the screen.

Unknown Number.

A single message appeared:

You thought you won? This is only the beginning.

Her blood ran cold.

The First Threat – A Warning in the Dark

After dinner, Alexander walked her to the elevator, his expression unreadable.

"You handled yourself well tonight," he said. "Most people would've cracked under pressure."

Elena exhaled. "I told you—I don't break easily."

He studied her for a long moment. Then, unexpectedly, he reached out, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear.

The touch sent a jolt through her, but she didn't move away.

His voice was quieter when he spoke again. "But be careful, Elena."

She frowned. "Of what?"

His eyes darkened. "Winning a battle means making enemies. And you've just made several."

She swallowed. "I can handle them."

Alexander smirked, but there was something almost dangerous in his expression.

"We'll see."

The elevator doors slid open.

Elena stepped inside, but as the doors began to close, Alexander called out—

"One more thing."

She looked up.

He met her gaze, his voice smooth and deliberate.

"I'll marry you."

Her breath hitched.

"But remember…" His smirk deepened. "I don't fall in love."

The doors shut, leaving her alone with her racing heartbeat.

And the weight of what she had just done.

Hook: Elena has caught Alexander's attention—but has she also made herself a target? And what will happen at their mysterious dinner meeting?
